Keeping the Connection

CCHS Classmates have been meeting over the years, quite often just for an informal dinner, on this occasion the group of former school and team-mates met at Jane and John Fisher's house in Toronto. Jane says that similar groups use to gather each Christmas at the Morrison's to enjoy an "Open House". Seen here from C-'56 are Gord Brown from Collingwood, Ken Souter from St. Catherines, John Fisher now living in Foster, QC, Peter Rylander from Niagara Falls and from C-'53 Don Morrison of Toronto.

Alan Thomson C'60 and wife Marge
Alan and Marge Thomson recently cruised aboard NCL's "Pride of America" with ports-o-call in Maui, Kauai, Oahu and the big island of Hawaii. Alan says: "Aside from all the wonderful things for which Hawaii is best known, we found out that Hawaii is also the 'Spam' capital of the world (not made there) as far as eating is concerned. You can even get things like Spam burgers and Spam and eggs."

St. Lambert Curling Club Still Rolling Along
Unless you are a snowbird and travel south for the winter golf, for most Quebecers, winds up around the middle of October, just about the time curling starts ramping up. And for many of us it is a smooth transition from the Rock Pile to the good old St. Lambert Curling Club. Although struggling financially at times, especially since St. Lambert's merger with Longueuil and the loss of our favourable property tax status, the Club continues to flourish and provides a haven for many who would be house bound with nothing to do during the long winter months .

ROTHFELS, Horst A. 1918-2009 Born in Erfurt, Germany. Horst is survived by Edith, his wife of 62 years, 3 sons, Stephen (Calgary), Peter and Elisha (North Saanich) and Tom and Karen (Toronto) and 6 grandchildren, Nathaniel, Andrew, Tyler, Eric, Charlotte and Lana. Horst was a Holocaust survivor. He managed to get out of concentration camp and fled to England where he became a farm worker. When the war broke out, all Germans were considered "enemy aliens", were interned and were shipped to either Australia or Canada. Upon release from the Canadian internment camp, Horst worked for the war effort for the Canadian Marconi Co, as a tool and die maker. At the end of the war he decided to become a teacher and earned his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Education at McGill University. Married in 1947 to his lifelong love Edith. They raised 3 sons and Whitey their beloved dog. Horst was a teacher in the South Shore region of Montreal, became an Inspector of Schools for the Province of Quebec, then a School Principal, and lastly Director of Education for the South Shore Protestant Regional School Board. At this time he pioneered French Immersion in Canada, received a Fellowship for his work from the Canadian College of Teachers and became known as the "Father of French Immersion" in Canada. Upon retirement in 1984 he and his wife Edith moved to Victoria, where they enjoyed the beautiful outdoors. Horst had a lifelong passion for health, fitness and classical music. Downhill skiing was his biggest joy, and he continued to ski right up to his 90th year. Burial took place on February 17, 2009
Sad news to report re Mr. Rothfels. I enjoyed many of his ski trips during my CCHS years. Dave Pollock C'61
I have been asked by the family of Donald Watt, class of 1949, to get the news to the CCHS website that he passed away on Tuesday, February 17th. He leaves his wife Janice (Caron - also a CCHS graduate) and three sons Stephen, Garth and Murray. The memorial service was held at Collins, Clarke, MacGillvray, White here in St. Lambert on Monday, February 23rd. Dale Wallace C'51

I was so delighted to see the photo of Grade 4 class from 1948-49. There are three faces that I haven't seen for more than 50 years. Alan Frado lived across the street and I had a tremendous crush on him. He moved out West in grade 7 and I was devastated! The Hawes kids (6 of them) lived next door to Alan. We played together for years - "marbles" in the snow and during the warmer months we skipped "double Dutch" after supper on upper Birch. What a lovely surprise to see all three of them in one photo! I wonder where they are now?
Wendy Plumb (Irvine) C'57 I was just delighted to see my cousins the Andersons at the top of the news letter (Keeping the Connection) Many people got to know Sally though her work at Sir George Williams - Concordia university. She was in the admissions office I believe. One great gal let me tell you .... and I am certain that many people in St Lambert have only good things to say of Sally Thank you for the photo

Angus - I've heard that most of the surgeons in Halifax learned their trade by cutting up fish in various maritime fisheries when they were younger ,so I have no doubt that they'll have no problems with a "old shark " like you !!! We will await your next editorial, confident that you will share a few memorable anecdotes of a successful venture. All the best -
Ron Stewart C'58
Thanks for another Great Newsletter.
I really loved the picture of the 2 on the Ice, whether it's true or not. Peter Payan C'59
