Who's Who |
Recognize this fellow?
We received the following from Ross McCallum's son Brett following last month's addition to Ross in our Who's Who.
I have to say....WOW!!!.... you've done a really great job summarizing Dad's life in a few paragraphs and the integration of the pictures is fantastic. I really didn't expect the biography you were doing to be this comprehensive and done in such a nice presentation. It's really fantastic. I'm going to print it out and put it at the beginning of my "Dad's" scrap book. Thanks very much. Sincerely, Brett McCallum

School Memories |
I am so sorry to hear about Lincoln's ( LINCOLN McKESEY - C'76) passing. I was in the same grade as him. I never really got to know him but always thought he was the coolest kid. He stood out in school because he was at least a head above every one else and had the greatest voice. My deepest condolences to his family. Melanie (Kendal-Ward) Moore '76.

Retirement Afloat by Joe Steiner C'63 |
For many people, tired of working for a living, the idea of retirement springs forth thoughts of Freedom to do whatever you've been wishing you had enough time to do. For some, retirement means a continuation of what one does on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis except without the need to go to work. These people have hobbies and a large family or circle of friends which occupy their time now even more than ever.
For me it meant the opportunity to do something I had never done before.
I sold my house and moved onto a sailboat. The idea was to cruise, first to the Bahamas and then the Greater and Lesser Antilles, all the way to Trinidad. This would take two years and then I would reassess the Journey and make a decision about the future.
Little did I know that the Journey would be life altering. Little did I know what lay ahead.

The Football Player by Robert E. Wrigley, Class of 1961 |
Some time ago, Alumni Connection Editor Angus asked me to provide some articles on what it was like to grow up in St. Lambert from the late 1940s to early 60s. That was a long time ago, and I moved away from St. Lambert in 1967 (following six years at McGill University) to pursue research studies in Illinois, and to eventually take up a new career and residence in Winnipeg. So remembrances of my St. Lambert years have understandably faded with the passing years. Ideas from my sisters, Jean and Mary, plus boxes of old photos and memorabilia, have stimulated me to write several stories about my family, which I hope alumni readers will find interesting. I also trust that these attempts will "click the recall icon" of memories in others' memory bank, and encourage you, in particular, to think about and to write down your thoughts about your early years, no matter in what decade(s) you called St. Lambert home. I think you will find this effort of sharing nostalgia a pleasant one, and your relatives and descendants will appreciate having on permanent record bits of your biography. I'd love to know what my ancestors thought and did in the preceding centuries. I wouldn't be here without them. So here goes another short story about a young kid and his friends caught up in the St. Lambert sports scene .

THE COBRA DID IT by Virginia Carter, Class of 1954 |
I didn't get to India until I was well along in life. That's because Dad forbade me to go. He had spent almost 3 years in India during WWII and, while he had learned many things and had many experiences, he also almost died, which may be why he had a jaundiced view of the country.
Dad went to India when he was in his 30's as works manager of an Aluminium plant, the building of which he was to supervise in Alwaye. He took a train from Quebec to Los Angeles and one of the new fangled clipper ships from there on out. Mom, Joan and I were to follow when he had things set up for us. Trouble was the Japanese got nasty and bombed Pearl Harbor, thus closing our route to India. Dad then got typhoid and of 14 people going into the hospital with the disease at the time, only 2 came out alive. Dad was one of them. He told us with real ferocity in his voice "Never, never go to India". I didn't until he died, and then I went.

Our teachers - where are they now? |
Being far (in time) from both the school and the community, it is hard for me to relate back to my six years at CCHS or St. Lambert. It is different for those who grew up there, they have a longer history that sometimes spans the generations. There is more to remember and connect with.
For this reason, I will not be renewing my membership, though it was good to hear from three past students who remembered a younger teacher of Physics and Geography and perhaps influenced their lives in some way. Regards, - Peter Burpee .

Alumni Association News |
Architects drawings of the new gym, and layout for Chambly Academy. These changes should be completed well in time for Reunion 2010.

Notice the garden area just to the right of the new gym. You will be hearing more about this in the future. The alumni association hopes to be able to spearhead funding for an Alumni Garden.

In 1992 just after I retired, a book of which I was co-author with Donald MacKay, was published by Douglas & McIntyre. It is entitled "Train Country" and is a coffee table words and picture book about the history of Canadian National. It was a national best seller which, in Canada, means 10,000 or more. There are three photos that feature St.Lambert; pages 103, 178, 179. I would be happy to donate a copy to CCHS. Let me know what the process would be. Lorne Perry C'49

Wow that email did it for me, just the thought off being cut off from the ol' high school, got me racing to the wallet to grab the credit card and sign up! Thanks for that, sometimes some of us need a really hard shove! Thanks for your dedication to Chambly and all the grads, I stood in front of the school doors only last week, when I made a quick visit home and the feeling is still very much there, Special!

Saint Lambert - Photo of the Month |

I want you to know that I enjoy reading the monthly newsletter, but I was especially surprised and pleased to see the October's picture of the month, a November 11th Remembrance Day Parade of the Veterans. It brings back many memories, as my husband, Colin Mackie, is pictured right behind the cenotaph. I can visualize the veterans marching from the cenotaph down Mercille Avenue after the Remembrance Day Service, which was held regardless of weather - raining and sometimes very cold. My son Brian (C68) marched with the Scouts. I would love to know who submitted the picture, what year it was taken and perhaps receive a copy. It had to be taken prior to 1970 as Colin died in May 1970. Phyllis (Ingmire) Mackie (C38) |

ASK (Alumni Sharing Knowledge)
"ASK". This program is an online, e-mentoring service that pairs current students, or alumni seeking career advice, with other alumni. The focus of the service is to assist in learning about career options and seek advice from successful alumni working in a variety of professions and fields.
|
We have just recently come upon a roadblock that may endanger this entire program. Mike Languay, Principal of Chambly Academy, has advised as follows:
There are some legal hoops to jump through before we can have our students contact the mentors even through the internet. This is what the Directors of the School Board have said we need to do before the students can contact the mentors:
There should be a school-level screening of the adults involved.
As they are volunteers, a background check is required.
The nature of the relationship needs to be defined in a letter to parents and agreed to by volunteers.
The 14 alumni who volunteered to act as mentors are reviewing the situation. |

With all the turmoil in the market today, the collapse of Lehman Bros and Acquisition of Merrill Lynch by Bank of America I thought this might be some good advice... Watch for these consolidations later on: 1.) Hale Business Systems, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Fuller Brush, and W R. Grace Co. Will merge and become: Hale, Mary, Fuller, Grace. 2.) Polygram Records, Warner Bros., and Zesta Crackers join forces and become: Poly, Warner Cracker. 3.) 3M will merge with Goodyear and become MMMGood. 4. Zippo Manufacturing, Audi Motors, Dofasco, and Dakota Mining will merge and become: ZipAudiDoDa. 5. FedEx is expected to join its competitor, UPS, and become: FedUP. 6. Fairchild Electronics and Honeywell Computers will become: Fairwell Honeychild. 7. Grey Poupon and Docker Pants are expected to become: PouponPants. 8. Knotts Berry Farm and the National Organization of Women will become: Knott NOW ! Happy investing!
