Summer's over, the nights Halloween
are drawing in, and it's the
time of year for ghosts and
witches and spooks and
decorated pumpkins.

Unfortunately it is also the dog days between the last All Year Reunion in 2005 and the next reunion in 2010. New Alumni Association members are hard to find, and some people, who were members, are not renewing their membership. I wish I knew of a sure-fire remedy to this problem, but I don't. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

With regard to our monthly newsletter, Alumni Connection, I am afraid that Warren and I are running out of material. Readers are asked to help in this regard by submitting old photos, articles, comments, and suggestions.

Hear & Now

I read the September newsletter with great interest and especially enjoyed reading what you wrote about renewing acquaintances with things Chambly, school and town where I too was born and raised until mid-20's when I moved to Montreal.   I was speaking via e-mail with Alan Blackstock '72 and Phil Lang '72 earlier today and we decided to forward to you the attached photo's.  Back in 1970 a singing group under the direction of Bob Mitchell called The Hear and Now was made up mostly of students who attended CCHS.  A reunion was held in 2005 the same weekend as the CCHS reunion and we are also planning on meeting again in 2010 May.   Recently 16 of us held a mini-reunion at Tom Billard's church in Kirkwall, deep in the wilderness of Ontario between Hamilton and Toronto, and sang at the service 'just like in the old days".  Photo attached of Kirkwall and it is interesting to note that there are 16 of us in the photo including Al's wife who is holding the camera, 7 married couples except myself and Jim Hill whose spouses don't sing and most of us were married back when we first started thirty-five years ago.  It just keeps getting better and better.

Recollections of the Class of 1958's Trip to New York City
by Janis Johnston Cotter '58

Janis Cotter  Seeing the photo in the September issue of the newsletter of the Class of 1959's trip to New York brought back a few recollections of my own.

Our class, 1958, was CCHS's first to have such a Senior Class trip. An American friend, who had attended our school for a couple of years before returning to Philadelphia wrote and told me of her school's plans for a Senior Class trip to New York City which was sort of an annual tradition there. At that time my perception was that US high schools had more fun (spawned no doubt by Hollywood movies) and wished we could do the same. Then I dared to think, "Why couldn't we?". I shared the idea with some friends and they thought  it would be a wonderful way to cap off our high school years. The next step was to sell the idea to the powers that be, namely, principal, Mr. E. Y. Templeton.

With the help of my dad, who worked for the CNR, I did the research as to mode of transportation, hotels, tours, cost, etc. for a Spring 3 day trip. Concluding that a Greyhound bus would be the most practical and economical choice, we calculated the cost per student based, of course, on a full busload. A couple of classmates, Carol Denard, Joan Gregory and I then approached Mr. Templeton with our plan. He was understandably dubious at first, perhaps imagining all the legal, professional and personal ramifications of wild students running amok in the "Big Apple". After a few days of thinking it over and, I'm sure commiserating with others, he granted permission with a few conditions. Besides having the minimum number of participants, we needed parents' signed permission, at least two chaperones and the promise we would be on our best behaviour. If at any point there was trouble or mischief, the trip would be cancelled and we would immediately return home. Furthermore, the possibility of future school trips depended on the success of this one. And we were, after all, to be ambassadors of not only our school but our country. We assured him we appreciated his trust in us and would not betray it.

Alumni Association Distinguished Service Awards

The Alumni Association Board of Directors has established a Distinguished Service Award program to recognize the contributions individuals have made over the years to the alumni association and the preservation of school spirit for the school, and current student body. These contribution may have been monetary, a free service or, as in most cases, the donation of voluntary time and effort.

 Distinguished Service Award: Richard Bunnett

This month our distinguished service award is presented to Richard Bunnett, a name that is probably unfamiliar to most Alumni Association members but one well recognized by recent grads from CCHS and Chambly Academy.

Richard has been a staff member at the school for many years now in the position of Behaviour Technician assisting with special needs students. And, while that is his formal vocation and job title, like many of the teachers and staff he takes on several other roles not strictly spelled out in his job description.

He has been one of the main organizers of Chambly's highly successful annual fashion show, a charitable event that has raised thousands of dollars for a number of worthy causes. He has also worked tirelessly on the school year book, musicals/variety shows and other student activities.

In the run up to the 2005 Reunion, Richard was a tremendous help to the organizing committee, participating in the all our meetings, offering suggestion and advice and pitching in wherever necessary. He also acted as our liaison with the student body, organized their participation in the event and, unselfishly, devoted so much of his own time that weekend.

Thanks Richard for all that you have done and continue to do on behalf the school and its students.

Bravo, Bob Wrigley.......enjoyed your writing immensely.   I had such a crush on your skating sister Jean!  ..... H. William (Bill) Webb '57

I read all your correspondence but have never replied previously. I had hoped to surprise those that I taught and those who remember me with a surprise visit at one of your reunions. That, unfortunately, hasn't happened. I taught Senior Biology in the Lab - room 3 - Gen. Science, Jnr. Geog, and Jnr. Math. in the early 70's. And was later transferred to LeMoyne D'Iberville in Longueil -  At the time I lived either at 593 Desaulniers or at 411 Brixton.
My memories are exceedingly pleasant of CCHS - I was a regular chaperone to any and everything held by the students and Student council Advisor. Dr. Gould was Prinicipal, names you mentioned like Bernie Praw etc. were junior to me.
I have been living in Barbados since 1983. I am a past Principal (Headmaster) of one of our leading Grammar Schools (for 13 1/2 years). Then appointed Special Adviser to the Attorney-General in matters of Juvenile Corrections and Penal Reform. Then Project Director of The Justice Improvement Programme for Barbados. Recently I was one of the managers for World Cup Barbados and am now doing private consulting - otherwise retired.
Regards to all. Hope I get to a reunion sometime.  ..... Hallam King

Angus, I love the concluding line in your editorial this month "The road to the future etc." !  Also thanks for putting user ID and password on the opening page of the newsletter.
Hope you are well and enjoying life as much as I am.  ..... Virginia Carter '54

Thank you for the great newsletter. It is great to see what others are doing from our past and know that the old ST.Lambert still exists in our hearts even though we have all moved on. It is hard though to see all those who have past away from our childhood. I look forward to your letter every month. It has also put me in contact with many old friends that I had not spoken to in 40 years.
To all of you thanks, and keep up the good work.  ..... Robin Pollitt '63

You do a great job with the newsletter and I always look forward to it
each month.  The reunion is now only 20 months away and I can't wait to see
all of my old school mates once again.  We lost Rod Norman this year due to
a heart attack and as I look through pictures of our Hear and Now
performance and rehearsals of the last reunion, I am reminded not to take
anything for granted. We had such wonderful years at CCHS.  ..... Brian Pond '73

Sorry I am a little late with my fees this year (as usual).  I paid  it tonight through PayPal and you should be receiving it shortly.  I  just wanted to tell you to keep up the great work you and your fellow  organizers are doing on this newsletter/website.  It is a fantastic  tool for all of us and we should use it to its fullest.  I spend a  lot of time browsing through the website periodically, just to make  sure I'm keeping up to date on news.  I've met so many classmates  since the Reunion and it is all thanks to this website.
We hope to have our Calgary Reunion sometime in the near future.   Last year's never really got off the ground, so we are long overdue.   Will Arnold and I, along with a few others have been in touch and  will advise you shortly of the time and place, in case you want to  post it on the newsletter, if there is time.
Keep on typing, cutting and pasting.  ......Gail Lee '70

Lest we forget

In a few short weeks we will once again see people with a poppy pinned to their lapel. I trust we all will pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans and those that serve today in far off Afghanistan.

The following is part of an article that appeared in the Montreal Gazette on Tuesday, October 14, 2008

 Getting a world view
Students at Chambly Academy get a global perspective in the International Baccalaureate program. Their school is one of 97 in Quebec that has adopted this unique approach to teaching

To graduate with IB certification, students also need to complete several consecutive years of community-service hours. Chiasson helps out at her church, during brunches, sales and dance lessons for kids.
"You have to show that you're given of your time,"  said one student.
In choosing their community service commitments, students are free to pick their own causes and organizations.
For example, many take part in an autumn cleanup crew that goes out into the community to rake and collect fallen leaves.
In fact, the students' community-service work has been so important to the community, that many local organizations will be setting up booths in the school next Monday (October 20th). The event is called the Community Service Fair, and Chambly Academy students will tour the booths and decide which of the groups they are interested in helping out.
Meanwhile, older students are encouraged to help and mentor their younger counterparts. Teachers provide mentorship to individual students. And parents are encouraged to volunteer in the school.
