Alumni Association News |
- Board of Directors meeting held Tuesday, March 18, 2008 The evenings discussions centered mainly on Reunion 2010 agenda proposals.
- Warren Mackenzie C'57 has resigned from the Board of Directors and as the Representative for the Province of Ontario. Warren will continue with: The Monthly Newsletter, The Alumni Photo Gallery, The St. Lambert Photo Gallery, The Who's Who, his Class Contact work with Classes from 1938-1957, and most importantly the Reunion 2010 effort. He felt that being on the Board of Directors is where he contributed the least, and that the position would better be filled by someone else.
- On April 24th. members of our Executive Committee of the CCHS & CA Alumni Association will be making a presentation of $610.00 to Madame Michelle Desmarais of the St. Lambert Commerative Plaques committee. The monies are from the associations general revenues and also donations from association members. Pierre Richard from the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will also be attending the presentation.

Alumni Association Distinguished Service Awards
The Alumni Association Board of Directors has established a Distinguished Service Award program to recognize the contributions individuals have made over the years to the alumni association and the preservation of school spirit for the school, and current student body. These contribution may have been monetary, a free service or, as in most cases, the donation of voluntary time and effort.

The association is pleased to announce four new recipients of our
Distinguished Service Award
Barry Keeler: Class of 1982
Last September Barry was elected Co-Chairperson of your Alumni Association thereby guaranteeing his stay on the Board of Directors for at least a few more years
Barry was a key man on the 2005 Committee looking after Saturday festivities, arranging for souvenirs and helping out with numerous other events. He was also renowned for being able to purchase liquid refreshments at a very low cost, earning him the well deserved titled of Mr. Beer Man. The High School still looks to him for support and he is always willing to help out - he did a great job on the picnic.
Barry recently moved from the South Shore to the West Island so that his significant other could be closer to work (what a guy). He is self employed as an IT consultant so location isn't really a problem, just as long as he can make to the school for Director's meetings.
Thanks Barry for your contribution.
Tony Salmon Class of 1974
Tony was another 2005 Committee stalwart who worked on several events. Most visibly, he and his company were responsible for turning the S. Lambert Arena into a great dinner/dance venue.
Tony sits on the Alumni Association Board of Directors, is a life member and still lives on the South Shore (Brossard). He is frequently asked by the school for help and he always delivers. The last two years he has assisted with their highly successful fashion show and, of course, he supplied most of the tools and ingenuity for getting the picnic tables built.
Good job Tony, we look forward to your work on the 2010 Reunion
Brian Perron Class of 1972
Brian, another mainstay of the 2005 Committee, is also a life member, continues to sit on the Board of Directors and still resides on the South Shore (Candiac).
He organized the Sunday Ecumenical Service, produced the Reunion souvenir booklet and printed name tags and signage for the 2005 event - at almost no cost to the committee. He also was a very competent picnic table builder.
Along with Bernie Praw, Brian is recognized as first class joker. His sharp wit (jokes, accents & impersonations) keeps everybody loose. Maybe we can get him to perform in 2010 variety show.
Of course, in a very special way, Brian got more out of the 2005 Reunion than anyone, having connected with his future wife at the event.
Thanks for everything Brian.
Peter Payan - Class of 1959
Peter was on the scene very early trying to get things started for 2005. He burnt up the telephone lines tracking down hundreds if not thousands of alumni in an effort to build the contact data base needed for the event. His efforts certainly paid off.
When you passed through the registration room in 2005 you probably ran into Peter and his wife as they handed out packages all day long and long into the night. Peter was also very involved in the picnic table construction and personally moved more pieces of lumber than any one in attendance that night.
Retired now and living in Montreal (NDG) Peter is a lifetime member and continues to sit in the Board of Directors.
In this day and age he is also a bit of a throwback - he doesn't own a car - which is kind of strange given that he used to drive his motorcycle to school in grade 11. Anyway, not being a car owner doesn't slow him down, he can get almost anywhere in the city by metro and/or bus and for his frequent trips further afield he enjoys train travel. He may even rent a car on occasion.
Thanks Peter for all your efforts
.
I always look forward to the Alumni Connection and was wonderfully surprised to read that I received the Distinguished Service Award. Thanks for this great honour. - Bernie Praw

1930's
Phyllis Mackie (Ingmire) Class of 1938 writes:
Since becoming a member of the Alumni I have enjoyed reading some of Andrew Little's past histories of St.Lambert and Lorne Perry's memories. They bring back memories of living there from 1936 to 1991 and raising my family there.
Actually my roots go back much further. My mother, Elsie Louise Brown, lived in St.Lambert as a young child and I have a book in my possession presented to her in Grade One-A for First General Proficiency at St.Lambert Academy in 1905. I also have a church bulletin dated 1914 published by St.Cuthbert's Presbyterian Church. The minister, Rev.William Munroe resided at 16 Aberdeen Street, Telephone 45. My grandfather, Robert Brown, was an elder and the Sunday School Superintendent. The church building stood where Green Street now cuts through to Elm St.
My parents moved to St.Lambert in 1936, thus my sister, Barbara Ingmire and I enrolled at St.Lambert High School. She graduated in 1946 and I in 1938. In 1948 I was married to Colin Mackie. He was active with the local Canadian Legion. We had two children. Brian who graduated in 1968 and Barbara-Ann (Smith) in 1974. My husband passed away in 1970. At the time of his death he was Superintendent of Technical and Vocational Education with the Protestant School Board of Montreal.
My sister Barbara (deceased) married Donald Murdoch (deceased), another 1946 graduate. Their son, Duncan Murdoch graduated in 1972. He attended the 2005 Reunion. Barbara Murdoch was principal of Victoria Park School from 1961 until her death in 1970. A library, dedicated to her memory, was established with the help of many private contributors and local organizations at the school. Barbara started teaching with the Chambly County Board in 1959. Her first year with the board was spent at St.Lambert Elementary School working with ten and eleven year olds. She then went to Victoria Park School as Kindergarten Teacher and in 1962 became Principal.
St. Lambert certainly holds many memories for me, both happy and sad.
Editor's comment: Phyllis is the Most Senior MEMBER of our association. The 1913 Church Bulletin has been sent for restoration to our Photo Editor, Warren Mackenzie, as it was beyond my abilities to present clearly. Phyllis resides in White Rock, BC Pictured above is Phyllis with her granddaughter Kim at White Rock beach. It was taken in January/08.
1950's
Lillian Puust (Sommet) C'57 writes:
Do you have a ready-made introductory letter that can be sent to "The Missing"?
Editor's comment: Experience has proved that a personal note from a classmate inviting a person to join the association and commenting on what you find interesting in our website and newsletters goes a lot further in encouraging people to join. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jan Waldorf (Rattray) C'55 writes: Thanks for working on CCHS stuff. I'm 70 now and so many light years away from the school, St. Lambert, even Quebec that going back is out of the question for me. I did go to my 50th CCHS class reunion and that was fun and I am going to the 50th reunion of my McGill physiotherapy class in October. But that's it for me.

Larry Lloyd C'57 writes:
I did not appreciate the e-mail sent to me advising me that my membership fees were overdue. How am I supposed to know that if I am not advised and to my knowledge you have not advised me that they were coming due, due, or overdue until now. I am not a person that lives in nostalgia or the past and I am not getting much from being a part of the association. The one thing I thought was a great idea was the golf tournament here in Toronto last year, but unfortunately it was canceled due to an insufficient response which was sad. I suggest that you cancel my membership as I will not be renewing it.
Editor's comment: Actually it was the 2nd. reminder, sent a month after his membership had expired that was not appreciated. The initial email was not read. The standard procedure is as follows:
- Reminder sent on day membership expires.
- Follow up sent 30 days later.
- Notice of termination of membership sent 60 days after initial notification.
1960's
Dave Erskine Life Member C'63 writes: Great work on these newsletters as usual. I enjoy all of them.
I was an under motivated underachiever academically and very inept at the boyfriend/girlfriend thing at high school but I very much enjoyed sports at CCHS and in St. Lambert. I don't remember the school teams having a nickname such as the "Fighting Cougs" (which seems to be the name of every second band in the Rose Bowl Parade) or the "Raging Rouge et Noir" or whatever. I doubt if the other schools like Royal George, Lemoyne, Mountainview or St. Bruno etc. did either. Come to think of it, except for the football Combines, I think that the St. Lambert teams such as in representative hockey were also nameless.
My era was the early '60's but I was wondering if there are readers from other era who can remember if the Chambly teams ever had a nickname.

Dave Gagen C'69 writes:
I appreciate what everyone is doing to make this such a good newsletter. I spend a lot of time on the road and receiving & reading the newsletter helps to "keep me grounded" (so to speak).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ari Dale C'64 Life Member writes:
Had the impression that you were contemplating a way for the alumni to submit brief biographical notes- I think that that would be of great interest.
Editor's comment: That is the long term goal. This process will begin following the revamp of all the class pages to the new format.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Barry Elder C'63 writes: I have very little regular contact with St Lambert people. However I do know where a few of them have lived. Some are still in the area and didn't seem to mind being "cold called". My point is that the ones I spoke to had no knowledge of the organization and seemed interested. If every current member tracked down just 1 convert, the ripple effect could be significant.
I emphasized to the two I called, that their was no obligation and provided them with the info to contact you. Alternately they could call me back and I would pass the info along.
1970's
Julia Papucciyan C'72 writes: I'm off to St. Maarten next month for 3 weeks...my cousin's son lives there, so it will be great, no hotel!!!
Allan Coates C'70 writes:
Great re-design of the website. I looked at every single photo to see if I recognized anyone. Keep up the good work.
1990's
Patricia Innes C'97 writes:
My picture is posted on the www.chamblycounty.com page and was pulled from my Facebook account without my permission. I'd like it removed please and in the future, I hope you'll ask people to use their photos prior to posting online. This is not a picture I want publicized on the Internet.
Editor's comment: If one doesn't want their picture publicized on the Internet then one should not use FaceBook where millions of people can view.

More of How to know if you're fromMontreal -
submitted by Deb Myles C'80 |
You believe to the depth of your very being that Toronto has no soul - but your high school reunion is held in Toronto because most of your classmates live there now.
You greet everyone, from lifelong bosom friends to someone you met once a few years ago, with a two-cheek kiss.
You know what a four-and-a-half is.
You're not impressed with hardwood floors.
You've been hearing Celine Dion jokes longer than anyone else.
You can watch soft-core porn on broadcast TV, and this has been true for at least 25 years.
You were drinking cafe-au-lait before it was latte.
Shoppers Drug Mart is Pharmaprix and Staples is Bureau en Gros, and PFK is finger lickin good.
You really believe Just For Laughs is an international festival.
For two weeks a year, you are a jazz aficionado.
Everyone on the street - drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists think they're immortal, and that you'll move first.
You're proud that Montreal is the home of Pierre Trudeau, Mordechai Richler, William Shatner, Leonard Cohen and the Great Antonio... And, you consider Donald Sutherland (and by default, Keifer), Guy Lafleur, Charlie Biddle, and Roch Carrier Montrealers, too.

Snowbird Reports |

The two pics above do a great job in summarizing why Canadians flock to warmer climes during our long winters. The pics were taken on the same day in March. On the left is London, Ontario, and on the right is Fontana California. However Spring is just around the corner and the Snowbirds are heading north for another year. |

News release - City of Saint Lambert |
A new multi-purpose hall will be created in the Saint-Lambert Village
Saint-Lambert, Wednesday, April 9, 2008 - At its regular meeting on April 9, 2008, Saint-Lambert city council announced that the former post office on Hooper Street would become a multi-purpose hall. To effectively meet the need for a place where meetings, receptions and cultural activities can be held, city manager Michèle V. Lortie presented city council members with a plan that would give a new vocation to the former post office. This plan is the concrete result of an analysis conducted of municipal infrastructures, and reflects the wishes of Saint-Lambert city council.
The building, which belongs to the City of Saint-Lambert, will be made into a multi-purpose hall that is properly equipped and set up to host cultural and social events in the heart of the Village.
"Located beside Mercille Park just opposite the library, the building lends itself well to cultural activities and will meet the ever-growing need for spaces adapted to ourresidents' social and recreational activities," stated Mayor Sean Finn.
Call for tenders for the old Anglican church
In addition to breathing new life into the former post office, city council has decided to launch a call for tenders regarding the old Anglican church at the corner of Elm and Lorne streets. The eventual owners will have to respect the heritage requirements stipulated by Saint-Lambert.
"We believe that the different groups working in the local or regional cultural
sectors will be glad to seize the opportunity to acquire this building as a site for theiractivities," commented Mayor Finn.
