Greetings friends,
It was great to be back in St. Ann's pulpit this morning! This morning's homily was titled: "Behold, how they love one another." The second reading of the morning, from I James, provided ample inspiration for the homily -- which addressed important identity questions, like: 1) How does the world know we are Christians, and, 2) How do we know we are God's own for ever?
Terree Emrich served as organist and choir director, leading the choir in that excellent anthem by Ralph Vaughn Williams: At the name of Jesus. Randy Wakitsch was back in service as Worship Assistant -- his shoulder is healing from recent surgery, and, his ministry with us is greatly appreciated (but, he's not yet ready for golf yet). The Rev. Lynn White read the Gospel; Hannah Gitlin was acolyte; Mike Emrich and Gunnar Gitlin were readers; Nadine Francione and Duane Lahti served the chalices; Don & Julia Blaho were ushers; Roma Simons & Pat McCullough served as Altar Guild; and Vincent & Victoria Castillo hosted the Coffee Hour. Thank you to everyone for your ministry at St. Ann's this morning.
It was my great pleasure yesterday to present Anna Blaho and Anna Zaino to Bishop Jeffery Lee for confirmation. The confirmation service was held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Highland Park. We thank God for these Christian young people. By the way, Anna and Anna (known also as "the Annas") have volunteered to teach next year's toddler Sunday School class. We will be introducing a new curriculum experience known as "Godly Play." The children have a real treat in store for them next Fall. Thank you Anna and Anna!
We have numerous announcements of upcoming events and opportunities at St. Ann's. Please, be sure to scroll down through this edition of the "Rector's Reflection" for all the news.
Thank you, God Bless you, and -- See you in church!

Mission-Oriented Coffee in St. Ann's Cups
You may have noticed that on most occasions we use real cups for coffee at St. Ann's (in lieu of paper products). This is one of the small contributions we make towards a greener St. Ann's.
You may also have noticed that some time ago we changed the coffee we use as well. We purchase our coffee from Pura Vida. Pura Vida is Fair Trade, Certified Organic and Shade Grown. Check out this quick video that explains the Pura Vida philosophy.
The special private label "Bishop's Blend" coffees are doing double-good. These coffees are a joint fundraising venture that also benefit Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD). Our purchase of Bishop's Blend helps ERD meet needs worldwide. Episcopal Relief & Development receives 15% of the purchase price from the sale of each bag of Bishops Blend coffee.
On the third Sunday of each month the Green Group makes this same "Bishop's Blend" coffee available to the public for purchase. Watch for the coffee sales table in our parish hall after the 9:30 Eucharist on these special Sundays.

TOP STORIES - From Episcopal News Service In light of swine flu outbreak, churches consider procedures By Solange De Santis (4/28/09) [Episcopal News Service] As health officials around the world monitor an outbreak of swine flu that has killed more then 150 people in Mexico and spread to six other countries, Episcopal churches are examining liturgical practices and reviewing emergency plans. "Swine flu is currently being handled by the health authorities. We are, however, prepared to respond through our church networks should we be needed," said Abagail Nelson, senior vice president for programs at the New York headquarters of Episcopal Relief and Development, the church's disaster-relief and economic-development agency. About 1,600 people have been sickened in Mexico and 50 cases have been reported so far in the United States, but no deaths. After the outbreak was confirmed on April 24, a number of churches in Mexico City on Sunday, April 26 canceled services. Information about preparing for a potential pandemic influenza outbreak is available on Episcopal Relief and Development's website. The site carries a list of questions and answers about pandemic influenza and contains links to information and resources for church people in the areas of preparation, care-giving, liturgy and spiritual practice. Simply place your aluminum cans in a plastic bag and place the bag outside the church's dumpster fence (on the right/west side). Howard will collect the cans and turn them into "cash" for St. Ann's.
