An Earth Day Celebration!
Well, what a glorious rainy day it was. Perfect for our annual "Earth Day" commemoration -- a day when the St. Ann's Green Group prepares our liturgy. We focused on thanking God for all of Creation and we renew our commitment to care for the world and all its inhabitants.
Our readings included a letter attributed to Chief Seattle, leader of the Suquamish & Duwamish Native American tribes, dated 1854. We were reminded: "What befalls the earth befalls all the sons [and daughters] of the earth." Following the inspirational readings, Brian Clow presented a thoughtful and challenging homily.
The choir sang the John Rutter anthem: For the Beauty of the Earth. And, perhaps my favorite hymn this morning was All things bright and beautiful.
Julia Blaho and Alyssa Zaino were acolytes today. Holly Emrich and Howard McCarthy were chalice bearers. Howard was also our Worship Assistant. Duane and Carol Lahti were readers, and Vince and Victoria Castillo were ushers.
We prayed for each person on our prayer list by name this morning, including those who are ill and those serving in the Armed Forces. We Annette Jones (Jenifer Loacker's grandmother) who died this past week. We prayed, too, for Anna Zaino and Anna Blaho who will be confirmed by Bishop Lee this coming Saturday (at Trinity Church, Highland Park).
I believe there were nearly 70 in church this morning. We had a wonderful service -- then, we enjoyed visiting in the parish hall while munching on "compost cookies" and other intriguing treats that the Green Group provided for our amusement and refreshment. Thank you everyone!
If you were unable to join us this morning, take heart -- next Sunday is only 7 days away! See you in church, soon.

Nets for Life - a great success - Final Report - WOW !
Sitting on my desk at this very moment is a check in the amount of $662.00 -- the total amount contributed by parishonners for our Lenten Outreach Project: Nets for Life. Once I prepare a cover letter the check will be off in the mail to the Episcopal Relief & Development. Remember, each net will save at least 3 lives . . . so, at $12 per net, St. Ann's contributors have saved at least 165 lives (most of whom will be children under the age of 5)! Thanks so much!
Members of the Episcopal Church have a long history of educating the young in the developing world. The Church is a trusted partner in shaping the future of a village, which is why NetsforLifeŽ has been so effective at educating people about the importance of net use and other strategies to fight malaria. One million people die from malaria each year and 75% of those who die are children under the age of 5.
The answer to this enormous malaria threat is not a difficult or costly answer. At this point, the most effective remedy against malaria, involves the use of mosquito nets. The mosquito nets are hung over beds or mats, and most of the mosquito nets cover three people at time. The effectiveness of these mosquito nets against malaria is phenomenal. Check out the website: Nets for Life Africa -- Thanks so much for your generosity that will indeed save lives. Rev. St. Ann's Green Team Project Gains Acclaim!
Our St. Ann's Green Team was recently featured in the Lutheran periodical, Living Earth.
Here is an excerpt of that article:
"When the members of St. Ann's Episcopal Church, in Woodstock, IL, conducted a green audit for the congregation, they identified stormwater management as a key concern for their congregation and community. In developed areas pollutants including car oil and lawn fertilizer easily run from impervious sources like roads, parking lots and roofs into stormwater drains, which, in turn, empty into nearby streams and ground water. To reduce pollution in their local water table, St. Ann's "Green Team" built a "Rain Garden" bioswale on the church's property. A bioswale is a drainage channel planted with vegetation that collects, filters and releases stormwater runoff."
Hooray for our St. Ann's Green Team ! ! ! For more information please contact Mike White. |
