Wecome to St. Ann's

This was an incredibly beautiful day today -- almost 60  degrees -- with a fabulous blue sky.  I even saw two wonderful little red-breasted robins in my front yard as I left for the early service this morning.  Surely, Spring is on its way.
I'm using a summertime photo (on right) . . . as a reminder that the greenery and warmth promises to return one day soon.
The fifty-nine folks that worshipped at St. Ann's this morning were treated to a special vocal offering by Johnny Cash -- singing "Farther Along" -- in which Cash essentially poses the question:  How is it that sooooo many people seem to prosper and soar through life, while seemingly ignoring the Ten Commandments?
We are all theologians, you know - Johnny Cash, me and you.  Because theology, being the rational inquiry into thing religious/spiritual -- is something in which we engage all the time.  Even the youngest child is a theologian because they, too, ask questions and formulate theories about God and life.  When the teachings of our faith come up against "real life" -- that is when theology happens.  And, again this morning -- lots of theologizing happened at St. Ann's.
The bottom line regarding Johnny Cash's question:  those who ignore the teachings known as The Ten Commandments do so at their own peril - not because God is standing over anyone with a hammer, but because these teachings offer a path to a truly enriched life.  Those who disregard the Ten Teachings might certainly have more of some things . . . but, they have LESS of God's peace and so many other things that really count.
Terree Emrich lead the Choir today, and they were in grand form.  Next Sunday the choir will present John Stainer's arrangement of "God so loved the world" -- you won't want to miss it.  This morning Howard McCarthy was our Worship Assistant.  Jerry Kraemer and Jordan Castillo were Acolytes.  Jeff & Susie Scott were chalice bearers.  Mike Emrich and Joanne Gitlin were readers.  Don & Julia Blaho were ushers.  Tina, Alan, and Alina Hill were our Coffee Hour Hosts.   Thanks to everyone who served and prayed together this morning.
Remember to pray for Karen Murauskas and Randy Wakitsch, both of whom will have surgery this week.
If you were unable to be at St. Ann's this morning -- we missed you.
     See you in church, soon.

 Rev. Ed Bacon

Pasadena rector Ed Bacon to co-host 'Oprah's Soul Series'

By ENS staff, March 12, 2009

The Rev. Dr. Edwin J. Bacon Jr. is rector of All Saints Church in Pasadena, California, in the Diocese of Los Angeles

[Episcopal News Service] The Rev. Dr. Edwin J. Bacon Jr., rector of All Saints Church in Pasadena, California, in the Diocese of Los Angeles, will co-host three radio broadcasts per month for the Oprah Soul Series, beginning March 16.
Bacon called his new role "an exciting method" to proclaim the good news in a national forum, in a March 6 letter sent to parishioners of the 3,000 member congregation, known for its progressive politics and social justice activism. The full text of the letter is available on the church website here.
"For more than 40 years All Saints has sought ways to proclaim God's inclusive love, compassion and justice in the popular culture at the nation level. Each year it becomes more apparent that we must use every possible means to get our message out beyond the walls of our church," according to the letter, signed by Bacon along with the church's senior warden and junior warden-elect.
The inaugural show, to be broadcast March 16, will focus on "The Spirituality of the Current Economic Crisis."
Co-hosting with Bacon will be Elizabeth Lesser, co-founder of the Omega Institute, America's largest adult education center focusing on health, wellness, spirituality an creativity. A former midwife and mother of three grown sons, she is also the author of "Broken Open" and "A Seeker's Guide."
Other upcoming topics will include a Bacon solo interview with well-known Jesus scholar, the Rev. Marcus Borg, on "Jesus' Belief in a Compassionate God." Other guests engaged for Bacon's interviews include author and classics translator Stephen Mitchell (The Gospel According to Jesus; Loving What Is and A Thousand Names for Joy) and Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire.
The letter also noted that the arrangement involves "local advantages" such as access to spiritual leaders and teachers. "The compensation Ed receives for this work will go to our operating budget, which will be an added benefit during this economically challenging time," the letter added.
Bacon appeared on the Oprah "Soul Series" in September as a panelist in a "Best Life" series. He and other panelists discussed what spirituality means.   Oprah's "Soul Series" is described on her website as a weekly radio show during which she sits down with leading spiritual thinkers, teachers and authors to talk about matters of the soul, and shares insights into her own life. Sessions are available here.
Bacon has been rector of All Saints since 1995. He was born in 1948 and grew up in the Deep South, the son of a Baptist preacher. He graduated from Mercer University in 1969 and became involved in campus ministry. Ordained a Baptist minister in 1971, he joined the Episcopal Church a decade later. He graduated from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta and served congregations in Mississippi and Georgia before arriving at All Saints.

Lenten Outreach Project:  Nets for Life  - Update

Members of the Episcopal Church have a long history of educating the young in the developing world. The Church is a trusted partner in shaping the future of a village, which is why NetsforLifeŽ has been so effective at educating people about the importance of net use and other strategies to fight malaria.
Because of NetsforLifeŽ's efforts in its target countries, overall net use increased from 12% to 88% for children and pregnant women, the most vulnerable groups. One million nets were distributed; legions of malaria agents were educated and treated; and thousands of lives were saved.
During this season of Lent, we pray especially for children in the developing world so they may enjoy a better future.
St. Ann's is participating in a special Lenten project to reduce deaths due to malaria.  We know that m
alaria is totally preventable, yet every day, malaria claims the lives of nearly 3,000 children in sub-Saharan Africa alone.  Malaria kills a child every 30 seconds, but it doesn't have to!  Malaria is one of the deadliest preventable diseases on the planet.  It's caused by a parasite that is transmitted by mosquitoes that typically bite their victims at night.  One million people die from malaria each year and 75% of those who die are children under the age of 5.
Still, the answer to this enormous malaria threat is not a difficult or costly answer.  At this point, the most effective remedy against malaria, involves the use of mosquito nets.  The mosquito nets are hung over beds or mats, and most of the mosquito nets cover three people at time.  The effectiveness of these mosquito nets against malaria is phenomenal.
At the Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, this past November our bishop - Jeffery Lee - laid down the challenge for our diocese to raise the funds necessary to purchase one mosquito net per Episcopalian in our diocese.  St. Ann's is taking up Bishop Lee's challenge.  And, we will have a display in the parish hall by this coming Sunday - with lots of information to share about this Lenten outreach project.  One net (that saves at least 3 lives) costs only $12.00
         Check out the website:
Nets for Life Africa -- and let's see how many lives St. Ann's can save.  Thanks so much.   Rev. Pat

'I am Episcopalian' -- new 'microsite' showcases videos of diverse church members

[Episcopal News Service] A communications initiative to tell the Episcopal Church's story was launched today -- Ash Wednesday --  at www.episcopalchurch.org where visitors will find a new interactive feature called "I Am Episcopalian."
The so-called "microsite" contains short videos of people "sharing their deep, personal connections to the big, wide, vibrant church that we are," said Anne Rudig, who joined the Episcopal Church Center in New York as communications director on January 5.
Not only will the videos illustrate the diversity of Episcopalians -- "all ages, all walks of life, all ethnicities," said Rudig -- but the site also will let users upload their own videos.
