Lent
continues
at St. Ann's
This was a lovely rainy-day Sunday -- this second Sunday in Lent. All present were congratulated for having remembered to set their clocks forward one hour . . . and for making the extra effort to be in church with an hour's less sleep.
The Rev. Lynn White provided a most inspirational homily . . . reminding us, among other things, that God has indeed already initiated a "bail-out" for the human race. E-mail Rev. White if you'd like to respond to her homily. I have enjoyed my chocolate this week, because, rather than giving up chocolate or meat or something else like that - I, and many others in the parish, are trying each day to give up something that really makes a difference -- we are giving up fear, stress, or guilt. It might have been easier to give up chocolate - but giving up fear, stress, or guilt (or all three) is much more in line with what Lent is meant to be. . . a ridding ourselves of those things that separate us from God. It's not too late to give up fear, stress, and guilt bit by bit, day by day.
Terree Emrich continues on her winter Sabbatical, and our accompanist and choir director was Phyllis Connelly. The choir gifted us with the beautiful anthem, "Adoramus Te, Christe" . . . the latin words of which translate: "We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world." It was a sentiment and sound totally fitting for the day. Randy Wakitsch was our worship assistant today . . . serving with a broken shoulder. (Randy broke his arm/shoulder when he fell on the ice a couple weeks ago. He will have surgery next week - let's remember him in our special prayers.) Hannah Gitlin served well as solo acolyte. The Loacker family were Coffee Hour Hosts and Rob & Joan Purdy were ushers. Thanks to everyone who served and prayed together this morning.
If you were unable to be at St. Ann's this morning -- we missed you.
See you in church, soon.
Rev. Pat Conley+

TOP STORIES 'I am Episcopalian' -- new 'microsite' showcases videos of diverse church members [Episcopal News Service] A communications initiative to tell the Episcopal Church's story was launched today -- Ash Wednesday -- at www.episcopalchurch.org where visitors will find a new interactive feature called "I Am Episcopalian." The so-called "microsite" contains short videos of people "sharing their deep, personal connections to the big, wide, vibrant church that we are," said Anne Rudig, who joined the Episcopal Church Center in New York as communications director on January 5. Not only will the videos illustrate the diversity of Episcopalians -- "all ages, all walks of life, all ethnicities," said Rudig -- but the site also will let users upload their own videos.
Try the link . . . it is waaaaay cool -- Rev. Pat +

| Lenten Outreach Project: Nets for Life - Update
Members of the Episcopal Church have a long history of educating the young in the developing world. The Church is a trusted partner in shaping the future of a village, which is why NetsforLifeŽ has been so effective at educating people about the importance of net use and other strategies to fight malaria. Because of NetsforLifeŽ's efforts in its target countries, overall net use increased from 12% to 88% for children and pregnant women, the most vulnerable groups. One million nets were distributed; legions of malaria agents were educated and treated; and thousands of lives were saved. During this season of Lent, we pray especially for children in the developing world so they may enjoy a better future. St. Ann's is participating in a special Lenten project to reduce deaths due to malaria. We know that malaria is totally preventable, yet every day, malaria claims the lives of nearly 3,000 children in sub-Saharan Africa alone. Malaria kills a child every 30 seconds, but it doesn't have to! Malaria is one of the deadliest preventable diseases on the planet. It's caused by a parasite that is transmitted by mosquitoes that typically bite their victims at night. One million people die from malaria each year and 75% of those who die are children under the age of 5.
Still, the answer to this enormous malaria threat is not a difficult or costly answer. At this point, the most effective remedy against malaria, involves the use of mosquito nets. The mosquito nets are hung over beds or mats, and most of the mosquito nets cover three people at time. The effectiveness of these mosquito nets against malaria is phenomenal. At the Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, this past November our bishop - Jeffery Lee - laid down the challenge for our diocese to raise the funds necessary to purchase one mosquito net per Episcopalian in our diocese. St. Ann's is taking up Bishop Lee's challenge. And, we will have a display in the parish hall by this coming Sunday - with lots of information to share about this Lenten outreach project. One net (that saves at least 3 lives) costs only $12.00 Check out the website: Nets for Life Africa -- and let's see how many lives St. Ann's can save. Thanks so much. Rev. Pat
