| Greetings!
Summer is coming, and it's time to come out of hibernation. For most of us, putting on shorts and t-shirts after covering up all winter brings a new focus on getting our bodies in better shape. We want to look great (well, at least decent) in our swimsuit, and be fit enough to bike, hike and enjoy the summer weather.
We're sharing a few tips to get in shape, and some interesting diet study results on...you guessed it - almonds!

In a US City of Hope National Medical Center study, two groups of overweight and obese adults were put on diet programs for 6 months. The two diets had equal protein levels and calorie counts, but one contained moderate fat from almonds and the other included self-selected carbohydrates. Those in the "almond diet" group reduced weight and body mass index (BMI) by 18%, while those in the carbohydrate group saw only an 11% reduction. Waist circumference measurements in the almond group dropped by 14%, compared to 9% in the non-almond group. Study author Michelle Wein explains that not all of the fat in almonds is absorbed by the body. "The fiber binds with a portion of the fat, so that it doesn't come into contact with the intestinal wall, it just gets flushed out of the body." She also points out that almonds are satisfying and contribute to dieters feeling full. See the study in detail here.
So go ahead and add some crunchy, satisfying almonds to your diet this summer. |

Now is a great time to get back to healthy eating and increase our exercise levels. The days are getting longer, so it's easier to fit in a thirty-minute walk every day while enjoying the sights of spring. Walking will help tone your legs and backside, and provides cardiovascular benefits as well. Incorporating some interval training will help with fat burning - vary your walking speed and intensity, add short segments of jogging, or even sprints. Adding some strength-training to your routine will not only help tone and build muscles, but will increase your metabolism so you will burn more calories even while resting. Cut down on portion size, and eat smaller meals throughout the day. Ten to fifteen almonds make a great snack, and the delicious flavors of Awesome Almonds® make them a satisfying and healthy substitute for sweets. When shopping for food, avoid processed foods and focus on lean proteins, vegetables and fruits. Stick to the outer aisles of the store, where the fresher foods are found. Don't forget the mental components of health. Hang that bathing suit somewhere where you can see it to remind you of your goal. Visualize yourself in a healthy, happy state, enjoying the best of summer. You'll be amazed at how much a positive attitude will help you reach your fitness goal. |
