Dear Malden Residents,

What seemed to begin as a typical Monday with a full schedule of meetings set for the morning with more in the afternoon changed with one phone call. During my second meeting of the day, an urgent note was delivered to me that a shooting had occurred in broad daylight on a main thoroughfare near a very busy restaurant.

As always, my first instinct was to call the Police Department to get the details of the incident and to make sure they had all the resources of the government they needed to investigate the incident and to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice.

Next, I contacted School Superintendent David DeRuosi to ensure our schools were appropriately locked down until the Police Department gave the all-clear for students to be outside for lunch and recess. Superintendent DeRuosi handled the situation with the utmost diligence as did our school Principals and staff.

My office has been working judiciously with Police officials to release information to the community as it happens...Click here to read the whole blog.

Malden Police Conduct Comprehensive Sweep of Public Areas

Responding to increasing public concerns about the escalation of criminal activity in parks and other public areas, Malden Police at the request of Police Chief James Holland, joined by several law enforcement agencies from surrounding communities and county and state police units, conducted a comprehensive sweep of playgrounds, parks and other public areas on Friday night to send a message that criminal conduct will not be tolerated in Malden.

Miller Park, Tartikoff Park, Roosevelt Park, South Broadway Park, the Linden School Lot and Park, Ferryway School and Park and Lincoln Commons were all part of the operation. At each stop, law enforcement officials interviewed youth and cleared the areas.

101 New LED Streetlights Installed in Malden

The City of Malden used a portion of an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) to procure 108 LED streetlights for an initial deployment around Malden Center on City owned streetlight poles. 101 were installed in the first wave with 7 held back until the initial startup period is cleared.

The streets chosen include Florence Street from Main to Commercial - LED lights on both sides; Commercial from Rt 60 to Charles - LED lights on one side; Rt 60 from Beebe School to Malden High - a combination of LED lights on both sides.

The installation was accomplished by Alltech Electric, a Malden company, and all fixtures removed were saved for use on other streetlights within the City. Mike Crotty, City of Malden Electrical Inspector, and Deborah Burke, MRA, were instrumental in the development and completion of this project.

The picture on the upper left side shows the comparison of a new LED street light on the left and a regular street light on the right.

Renovated Macdonald Stadium Hosts First MHS Home Game

The Malden High School Varsity Football team made history on September 8th when they played their first game on Malden's brand new, re-turfed field at Macdonald Stadium, 20 days before its ribbon cutting ceremony.

Mayor Gary Christenson was pleased with the synthetic and all-weather playing turf. The entire renovation project cost the city $2,000,000, and the ribbon cutting will be held on September 28th after the construction crew finishes the track of the field. Also, starting in the middle of September, residents will be able to participate in many activities such as a Run/Walking club, fitness boot camp, boys and girls open gyms nights and much more.

Mayor Gary Christenson Joins English Works Campaign

Mayor Christenson joined the English Works Mayors Circle, a group of elected officials who encourage local businesses to invest in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) by officially signing on to the English Works Campaign.

The Campaign is a statewide coalition of immigrant community leaders, labor unions, and businesses working together to increase the availability of English classes for immigrants in the workforce.

"Count me in!" said Mayor Christenson. "Malden is the second most diverse city in the state of Massachusetts and we want to make sure that all residents get the training and resources they need to be able to support their families and give back to the community. This is why we welcome the English Works Campaign and the resources it brings to Malden businesses and their immigrant workforce".

Celebrating Arts Month in September

Mayor Gary Christenson declared September 2012 as Celebrating Arts Month to honor the artists of our community, the children experiencing art through numerous art events, and seniors who contribute to the artistic soul of Malden.

During September, numerous art events have taken place, including Music and Art at Bell Rock Park, that brought artists, craftspeople and music to the historic memorial park; the Harvest Moon Festival, that brought multicultural performances to Fellsmere Pond; and Art+ Experience featuring a month-long exhibit celebrating Malden's seniors in the arts. Upcoming art events also include traditional and fun events like the Malden River Festival and Window Arts Malden.

"The city of Malden is home to a dynamic, vibrant and diverse arts community," said Mayor Gary Christenson. "I hope these events will bring local art, music, performances, crafts and fun into the community for residents and guests to experience and enjoy."

Threat Level for West Nile Virus Raised from Moderate to High

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has raised the threat level of West Nile Virus from Moderate to High. We advise you take proper precautions to avoid exposure to Mosquito bites by doing the following:

* Limit outdoor activity between the hours of dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

* When outdoors, wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and socks. This will keep mosquitoes away from your skin.

* Use a repellant with DEET, however, DEET products should not be used on infants under 2 months old.  For young children, the concentration of DEET should be 30% or less.

* Repair any holes in your screens; make sure they attach tightly to all your doors and windows.

* Remove any areas of standing water around your home.
