Mayor Christenson's Blog
Dear Malden Residents,
The recent unrelated acts of violence serve to remind us that the issue of public safety needs our constant attention. I want to thank the Malden Police Department and other law enforcement agencies for working diligently to solve the recent crimes that have negatively impacted our city. I also want to re-assure you that the safety of our residents and businesses is a priority for me. From meeting weekly with Police Department officials to holding eight public safety awareness meetings around the city, I am working hard to make sure that our community is safe. This week I announced a series of initiatives that will further assist our law enforcement officials to help prevent crime and improve public safety. They are as follows:
1. Hire additional Police Officers - I remain committed to increasing the number of police officers. Currently, we have 74 Patrol Officers and we are in the process of hiring 4 additional officers which will bring us to 78. I propose adding 3 more that will result in a total of 81 police officers. The funding will come from citywide positions in this Fiscal Year that have yet to be filled.

The MTEC will provide a welcoming structured, safe environment for Malden teens to spend time with their friends, receive homework assistance, play games, take part in enriching activities, develop leadership skills, promote community service opportunities and much more.
Mayor Christenson said the success of the center rests on support from all corners of the community, including the Malden YWCA, YMCA, Partnership for Community Schools, the Malden Redevelopment Authority, public school officials, the Friends of MTEC, volunteers, and the Trade Employers' Association of Boston.

What was it Like to Work in the City's Summer Youth Program?
The Mayor's Office is engaging our summer youths in the city's E-newsletter to contribute stories about their summer working experiences.
The success of the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program would not be possible without the support from the following organizations: State Senator Clark, and Reps. Donato, Fallon, and Brodeur; Malden City Council; Metro North Regional Employment Board; Bayrd Foundation; Industrial Aid; and Shannon Grant.
Rumana Papia, a Malden High School senior, started the Malden Summer Youth Employment Program in July and has interned at the School Superintendent's Office.

PUBLIC SAFETY TIPS
Neighborhood Safety Tips For Parents
--------------------------
Unfortunately, no neighborhood is completely immune to crime. However, there are steps you can take to help keep your family and your neighborhood safe.
*Know where your children are. Have your children tell you or ask permission before leaving the house.
*Help children learn important phone numbers.
*Set limits on where your children can go in your neighborhood.
*Get to know your children's friends.
*Teach children to settle arguments with words, not fists.
*Work together with your neighbors.
Trivia Answer: Its 250th anniversary, the largest celebration ever seen in the city at that time. |
