Dear Malden Residents,

As you may know, Malden was recently ranked as the 74th most walkable city in Massachusetts.

Working together, I believe we can increase Malden's walkability ranking. To that end I have appointed long-time Malden resident Sharon Santillo to lead the charge on this issue. I have also recently invited enthusiastic walkers in Malden to join the Committee to make recommendations to me about better signage and improvements to our crosswalks.

Since becoming Mayor, I have walked to City Hall many times... (Click here for the whole story)

Incidents of This Past Weekend

On Sunday morning at approximately 2:35 AM the Police Department was dispatched to the two hundred block of Salem Street on a report of a stab victim requesting assistance. Upon arrival at the scene, uniformed officers spoke to the male victim, a Medford resident. He indicated while leaving a bar room in Everett he was assaulted and sustained a laceration to his arm which EMTs were bandaging. The victim, who stated he took a taxi from the scene to his friend's house in Malden, was transported to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and the Everett Police Department was notified of the allegations.

Also on Sunday evening at 11:55 PM the Police Department was dispatched to the area of the Willow Street Skate Park on a report that someone was shot. Officers began their preliminary investigation by interviewing the victim and witnesses. It was learned that two males approached a group of youths who were hanging out in the Skate Park. One of the males was observed to pull out a handgun and begin to fire at the group of youths. The intended victims scattered and fled. One youth was struck by a round in his ankle area and suffered non-life threatening injuries. The male victim who is a 17-year-old Malden resident was subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment. Physical evidence was recovered at the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

Malden Police Department Solved One Attempted Robbery and Thwarted Another

Mayor Christenson thanked the Malden Police Department for solving multiple crimes this past week.

Around 1:30 PM on Tuesday an individual attempted to hold up the Linden Convenience store located at 455 Lynn Street. He fled in a vehicle which Detective Montina spotted in Everett on the Malden/Everett line. The car was subsequently stopped in Chelsea and the investigation directed officers to a fourth city, Revere, after it was determined the driver wasn't the suspect who entered the store. Anthony Morrison, age 36, was located at his residence and offered resistance but was subdued by officers with no injuries reported.

Reminder: West Nile Virus Still Posting Threat Locally

The City of Malden Board of Health along with the State Department of Public Health would like to remind residents about the potential risk for contracting West Nile Virus. Mosquito testing/monitoring has been done and positive results have been reported to us. This means some of the mosquitos in our city carry the West Nile Virus, and could potentially infect humans. Here are some tips below to prevent against mosquito exposure.

* Limit outdoor activity between the hours of dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

* When outdoors, wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and socks. (This will keep mosquitoes away from your skin.)

What is it Like to Work in the City's Summer Youth Program?

The Mayor's Office is engaging our summer youths in the city's E-newsletter to contribute stories about their summer working experiences.

The success of the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program would not be possible without the support from the following organizations: State Senator Clark, and Reps. Donatto, Fallon, and Brodeur; Malden City Council; Metro North Regional Employment Board; Bayrd Foundation; Industrial Aid; and Shannon Grant.

Annie Feng, a Malden High School graduate, came to the United Sates when she was 13 years old and will be attending the University of Massachusetts Boston in the fall. Feng started the Malden Summer Youth Employment Program in July and has interned at the Early Learning Center with My Little Best Friends Daycare.

 PUBLIC SAFETY TIPS
Getting a Permit for the Barbecue Grill
--------------------------
A summer barbecue is always one of life's simple pleasures. To have a safe and fun summer, all residents who hold a barbecue should be aware that it is state law to have a permit for the propane tank.

Storage of flammable gas requires a permit which only costs $5.00 per property and it never expires so long as you remain at that address. If you don't have the permit, your homeowner's insurance company can refuse to pay in the event of a fire caused by a grill.

Residents can get a permit at the Central Fire Station located at 1 Sprague St.
