Mayor Christenson's Blog
Dear Malden Residents,
I can't think of a better way to start the new fiscal year than with our Summer Youth Jobs Program. As many of you may know, this program has been a top of priority of mine and I am proud to say that as of today, we have 335 teens working for the City versus last year's when you had 130 youths.
Additionally, we've revamped the hiring process. Applicants are now required to submit a personal statement which includes their strengths and interests and must include letters of recommendation or references. They are also required to attend an orientation to understand the City's expectations of them. The focus of orientation is to review job training skills, work ethic, responsibility, professional behavior, and dress code. To help prepare for a successful career, teens are encouraged to advocate for themselves by working with their supervisors to iron out scheduling issues, to turn in timesheets weekly and to take responsibility for their performance.
The results have been great! (Click here for the whole story)

Sheriff's Program Cleaned up Malden Government Center and Parks
An inmate crew from Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian's Community Work Program (CWP) worked with the City's Department of Public Works at the end of June cleaning up weeds and brush around Government Center as well as several parks across the City. Sheriff Koutoujian and Mayor Gary Christenson toured the areas that were cleaned up on July 18th.
By having the CWP crew perform this task, the City has managed to save taxpayers roughly $15,000. The CWP crew will return later in the summer to cover some of the cleaned up areas with mulch to make them more aesthetically pleasing.
"The crew did a fantastic job. I'm grateful that we are able to provide an opportunity for offenders to give back to our community," Christenson said. |

Ways to Escape the Summer Heat
--------------------------
* The Department of Conservation and Recreation swimming pool on Mountain Avenue opens 7 days a week, from 11:00 a.m. until 7 p.m. from June 23 to August 26, usless inclement weather arrives.
Contact phone number: (781) 324-9350
* Click here to check out Heat advisory provided by the National Weather Service.
*Keep your car visible Park in well-lit areas, near people or with a parking lot or garage attendant on duty. Avoid having your car concealed by larger vehicles, fences or foliage.
*Don't make it easy
Keep windows and sunroofs closed and doors locked. Almost one-fourth of thefts from vehicles are from unlocked cars.
*Activate your vehicle's alarm
Don't have one? Factory-installed and-theft systems are best, but a professionally installed alarm can discourage a car break-in thief who likes to work in silence.
*Hide your valuables
Many smash-and-grab thieves act on impulse. So keep your stuff out of sight - either with you or in a locked trunk. Don't count on the glove box; thieves know to look there, and they're easy to break into.
*Don't hand a thief your keys
Take you keys with you. And if you think you have a great hiding place for a spare key, car break-in thieves know to look above the visor, in the center console, under the floor mat, in the trunk well, etc.
*Stow your stuff before arrival
Experienced thieves often stake out parking lots to watch for people putting items in their trunk. Help prevent car break-ins by putting valuables, like laptops, messenger bags and electronic devices, into your trunk before you get to the parking lot.
