President's Message

The IPSO Alliance is off to a great start in 2012. The solid foundation of our 2011 work has set the stage for another landmark year. Our marketing team has been busy getting the message out. We are increasing our global presence and are continuing the extension of our interoperability efforts.

Our Marketing Committee has been busy this quarter. Three press releases in the first two months have highlighted our new members, our latest interoperability efforts, and increased participation at industry events. The IPSO Alliance was a sponsor for the recent Parks Associates' Smart Energy Summit. In addition we have had representatives speaking at key industry conferences, such as SICS' Internet of Things Day in early February, the Amphion Forum in March, (hosted by IPSO member Mocana) and the IET Smart Metering Conference in April.  In April, the Alliance is sponsoring the North American IPv6 Summit and, in June, TIA 2012 in Texas and European Demand Response and Dynamic Pricing in the United Kingdom.

In response to our members' requests, we are excited to be hosting our first European Members Meeting -- our Spring 2012 meeting is being held in Paris, France. A great step forward in our growth, we hope to take this opportunity to further spread our message to the European community. In addition to strengthening our European ties, we hope to extend our efforts in the Asia/Pacific region this year through partnership with our current member companies.

Leveraging industry partnerships, we are proud to be partnering with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), in their first "IoT CoAP Plugtest". The Plugtest will be held March 24-25, preceding the IETF and IPSO Spring meetings in Paris, France. This commitment to interoperability testing will continue with our own members-only Interoperability Test and Demonstration following the Spring Member Meeting. Building on past efforts, our interoperability event will focus on multi-vendor, application level interoperability.

A very large part of promoting "IP to the edge" is done through speaking at various conferences. Your participation in these conferences allows us to reach a very large audience while keeping organizational expenses in check. As an industry alliance, we continue to have membership and participation fees well below those of our peers. We are able to do this because of your continued commitment and active participation on the TAB, on various committees and in promoting IPSO through your company participation at industry events. With your continued support, the IPSO Alliance will be able to reach new milestones in 2012.

We are certainly off to a promising start!

All households and businesses are under pressure to fulfil the twin ideals of reduced energy consumption and reduced costs. There have been many advances in building technology such as double glazing, and roof and wall insulation, which improve the loss of energy, but to date, very little has been done to minimise consumption at the source.  However, the "Internet of Things", particularly when connected with wireless technologies, is set to change the situation by offering a means to install many sensors and actuators at very low cost. Continue Reading...

A completely IPv6-based wireless sensor network has been put to a real life test in northern Sweden for over a year.  In a private home in the town of Piteå, the heating system has been successfully monitored and controlled using a 6LoWPAN-based wireless network.  A service architecture has been enabled by implementation of the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) and EXI compression.  Continue reading...
Spring Member Meeting and Interop Updates

Currently, over 30 member companies have registered to attend the Spring Member Meeting.  Registration is limited to member companies only, but we are currently accepting applications for membership.  Email info@ipso-alliance.org or visit our website for more information.

One unique event for the Alliance is our customary social dinner during our meetings.  This spring, we are inviting select members of the press to attend and learn more about our efforts to promote the use of IP in Smart Objects globally.  This is a great chance to sit down for a one-on-one conversation with many premiere executives and discuss their latest technological advancements.  If you would like to attend, please email marketing@ipso-alliance.org for more details.  Registration must be received by Monday, March 19th for inclusion in this exclusive event.

The IPSO Interop and Smart Energy committees have organized our Interoperability event to test a "whole system concept" of IoT devices based on a new Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Profile that IPSO is developing.  The combined effort focuses on creating a Home Energy demonstration that will show interoperability between multiple vendors over multiple communication media.   Some of the devices that will be part of the demo include lighting controllers, motion sensors, PLC/RF routers and PLC smartplugs, among others.  These devices will include fully embedded IP software from IEEE 802.15.4 through the application layer, including IPv6, UDP, TCP, HTTP, CoAP and 6LoWPAN interacting with graphical M2M web applications.  At the conclusion of the test event, IPSO will publish a report on the current status of IoT and M2M interoperability.  Please subscribe to our newsletter or email marketing@ipso-alliance.org if you would like to be the first to receive the report!
