Melanie Samet

Dear MMR Family~
As you can tell from the many new dogs arriving each week, we are growing tremendously. With growth is change; We are looking to add many important roles to our MMR team (as you will see in this newsletter under "volunteer positions needed".) It takes a village to run a dog rescue, and every role is key in helping it run smoothly. I hope that you will take advantage of helping MMR in 2012-whether it be transporting dogs, fostering, working on our pre-screening team, or helping with some of our administrative duties-we value your help and of course your input in making our process better. I'm proud of what we've done thus far, and I thank each of you for helping us make MMR the great organization that it is!!

With Gratitude~

Two years ago my family and I lost our beloved Golden Retriever Allie. Allie was like our third child plus my children grew up with her and the loss like all pet owners experience was devastating. We decided after a few months that we were ready to adopt and bring another forever baby into our home. After searching on Petsfinder.com we came across a story of a Yellow Lab Mix mother who was abandoned in the woods in Georgia and gave birth to 8 puppies that were being transported to Rockville, MD but were very ill. The organization had a great name we thought Mutts Matter Rescue. They were having an open house and we decided to check out the puppies. We knew one look and we be hooked, what I did not know how the open house would change my life forever. At the open house with all the adorable puppies my daughter and I picked out 2 prospective puppies a white one and a brown one. We decided that the white one now named Carly would be our new forever baby. When we went to pick Carly up Melanie Samet the founder of MMR asked me if I could foster one of the other puppies. The puppies all had kennel cough and she wanted them all to be healthy away from animal hospital. I said yes to the foster having no idea which puppy it was. It was the brown puppy which I passed on. After a few days of fostering we decided that is was fate and now Macy the brown puppy would be joining her sister in her new forever home. The two of them brought back what we were missing in our home...unconditional love, you know what I mean.
I was so impressed with MMR. I have always wanted to help but never made that first step. I decided to ask what I could do to help. I started doing home visits for prospective families. It has turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. For families to let you into their home and share their experiences are unbelievable. It has given me a renewed sense that goodwill does exist in this world. I have become so involved with home visits I now coordinate all the visits to prospective adopters. My niece gave me a magnet to put for my refrigerator, who rescued who? How true those three words are? My life has never been the same. Who knew that losing my beloved Allie would let me give back so much in her honor...

MB VetsWhatz up at Muddy Branch?

A word from your staff at Muddy Branch Veterinary Center about your pets dental health!
February is Dental Health Month!
Here at Muddy Branch Veterinary Center, a partner of Mutts Matter Rescue, Drs. Katz and Lowenthal take dental hygiene and oral care very important.  So much so, that in February, we participate in national dog and cat dental health care month.  Approximately 75% of animals over the age of 5 have some degree of periodontal disease (infection of the teeth, gums and bones associated with the teeth), which can have serious clinical consequences. Once an infection has set up shop in the form of tartar, calculus and gingivitis, the associated bacteria then has direct access to the bloodstream which can have further systemic complications and distant organ abnormalities.  Some studies have shown that with increasing degree of dental disease there is a corresponding microscopic degenerative or inflammatory change in the heart, kidneys and liver.
How can you avoid these very serious consequences?
  1. Make sure your pet has routine oral examinations at every visit.
  2. Practice routine oral care at home (brush teeth no less than 3 times a week, use hills T/D diet or CET chews 2-3 times weekly).
  3. Prophylactic dental cleaning (scale , polish and subgingival cleaning) as recommended by your veterinarian.

My name is Louis. I was surrendered to a shelter in MD by my "owners" when they decided I would be in the way with a new baby coming.I am 5 years old. I had some back issues that had to be corrected a few years ago according to my paperwork, but am fine now. I am great with other dogs, and am really one to enjoy a good lap :-)

L J aka Marlena
Hi! My name is Lady Jane, but I go by LJ. I'm a five-year-old, 23 pound Dachshund mix with beautiful brown eyes and am the picture of cuteness. I'm a people dog - I just want to be with my person and follow my foster mom around everywhere. She says I'm a great combo of couch potato and playful. I will snuggle up on the couch with you like a lap dog or sneak under the covers at night, but I'm always up for a walk or car ride, and love to play fetch and chew on my squeaky toys.

Patch Online

Check out Mutts Matter's Rescue new weekly feature on your local Patch.com site (www.patch.com). Each week we showcase one of our great pups in need of a new home, and also try highlight the importance and virtue of rescue. Our weekly article is currently being carried on various patch sites in Montgomery, Howard,Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William, and Loudoun Counties. If you're not familiar with the Patch, it's a local online news site that focuses on current issues and events in your community. You can support Mutts Matter and help our rescue pups by sharing and recommending their stories with your friends on Facebook and anywhere else you connect with people who love dogs. This gives our pups more exposure, and shows the Patch that they are doing a good thing by sharing their platform with us and supporting animal rescue.

Valentine's Day Pet Safety Tips

Valentine's Day is a holiday full of love and joy, but if you're not careful it can also include a trip to a local vet hospital. This Lover's Holiday can be full of potential hazards to your four-legged family members. Foods, flowers, giftwraps and candles can pose a threat to your pets well-being.

Many of you will receive chocolate on Valentine's Day, but remember that chocolate is toxic to pets. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it becomes and the more serious adverse reactions it can cause. Large amounts of chocolate can cause severe sickness or even death so please make sure to keep it up and out of the reach of your pets.

Flowers, such as lilies, can be toxic to cats. Roses can also be dangerous for dogs or cats. If a pet were to bite, step on, or swallow a stem they would be at risk of being punctured by the thorns. Similarly, gift wraps such as cellophane, ribbons, bows, and balloons can be a choking hazard if your pet tries to consume it.

Candles are also a big part of celebrating Valentine's Day. If eaten, the wax can cause upset stomachs, vomiting, diarrhea and choking. Don't forget to keep lit candles up and out of the reach of your pets, we don't want them to catch their happily wagging tails on fire! Also be sure to blow out candles before leaving your home or turning in for the night.

Last but not least, don't forget to enjoy your holiday with your pet! Provide them with delicious pet friendly treats or a Valentine's Day themed toy to keep them occupied while you are entertaining your guest(s).

Happy Valentine's Day!

How to avoid a CATastrophe.

Simple steps on introducing your new dog to the "Ruler" of the house.

Its been said the best dog trainer is a strong cat. However most of our pampered and possibly declawed felines have never seen or experienced a dog.  Here are five simple tips that can help ensure a happy transition.
1. Keep the pets separated for a few days. Put the cat in a room w/food and litter and allow them to smell each other through the door.

2. Always have your new dog on leash when you are home for thr first week or so. This will allow human to stop or control the dogs behavior should the cat get out.

3. When the cat is allowed out of the room introduce with dog on leash and keep him close. Do not allow gim to chase or investigate.

4. Give the dog high value treats when the cat is around. This will refocus him on you and allow him to see good things happen when the cat is around.

5. If your new dog has a high prey drive, keep him on leash when you are home as long aa possible. If he seems very focused on feline, five him a squirt from a water bottle whenever he looks at the cat. This will give the cat "Power".

Keep in mind it can take up to a month of seperation and training as it did with my MMR rescue. Hounds and Terriers are bred hunters and have a strong prey drive. Something to keep in mind during your adoption.

Any question or concerns about behaviors and training please email Joy Freedman and we will post some Q& A's

each month.

Have a safe February !
