Barriers to End-of-Life Care in the Intensive Care Unit: Perceptions Vary by Level of Training, Discipline and Institution

Journal of Palliative Medicine

Barriers to providing quality end-of-ife care in the intensive care unit are common, but little is known about how these barriers vary by level of training or discipline.  In this study, medical residents, ICU fellows, attendings and nurses at two teaching hospitals were surveyed about barriers to end-of-life care in the ICU. There were significant differences in reported barriers by level of training, discipline and institution, suggesting that the interventions to improve EOL care may need to be locally targeted and specific to the level of training and discipline.

Essential Practices in Palliative Care

International Association for Hospice & Palliative Care (IAHPC)

The World Health Organization advocates that palliative care should be integrated in health care policies and programs. Yet the vast majority of the world's population does not have access to palliative care. Under this framework, IAHPC, began work on several projects aimed at identifying "essential" components for optimal palliative care provision. The result includes this list of essential practices in palliative care for health workers working in primary care and includes those practices aimed at meeting the most prevalent physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs of palliative care patients and their families.
