Experts discuss planting fall bulbs and how to do seed gathering.

47th Ward School Corner

We would like to create a place in our newsletter dedicated to news from our neighborhood schools.  What would you like folks to know about your school?  Maybe it's a festival, a special project a class is working on or an award that you have received.  We welcome a couple of paragraphs by a parent, teacher or student about the school community or why a family chose your school or what makes your school special. Please email Dara  with your submissions.

Dear Neighbor,

This week I joined 31 of my colleagues in sponsoring a resolution calling for City Council hearings on school closings, charter school expansion and school consolidations.  I am concerned about a large charter school expansion in Chicago. Most studies, locally and nationwide, show that charter schools perform no better than neighborhood public schools. There are high performing charter schools, but when charter networks are studied in the aggregate, they produce results that are comparable to or worse than neighborhood schools.  Before CPS starts to close neighborhood schools and moves forward with a rapid expansion of charter schools, these are some of the questions I want answered:

  1. Which public schools are targeted for closing?
  2. What data is used to determine if a school is underutilized and/or underperforming?
  3. What data and process is used to determine if a charter school is a better option than a neighborhood school?
  4. How are charter schools performing as a whole?
  5. Are we considering closing charter schools that are not performing well?

These are just a sampling of questions I have.  I am hoping that hearings are scheduled soon so we can begin to have these discussions.

I know many of you have strong opinions about school closings, neighborhood schools and charter schools.  I want to hear your thoughts and opinions.  Please email, call or visit our office.

Mayor's Budget Address

Next Wednesday, Mayor Emanuel will present his 2013 budget to the City Council.  Following his address, there will be a series of budget hearings in City Council.  I will also hold town hall meetings in the ward to discuss the proposed budget with you.  Stay tuned for details.

Sincerely,

Ameya

A Healthy Day Was Had By All. Over 400 people received flu immunizations at our 47th Ward Health & Wellness Day. Ten presenters spoke to dozens of people at each of the half hour informational sessions, while the many health screenings were being administered. We also had the great news that Shellie, the rescue cat that Tree House brought to represent all of the kitties who are awaiting their forever homes, was adopted by a person who met her on Saturday.

Do you know a WWII Veteran? Char, a stalwart volunteer in our office, tells us about this truly amazing free program to honor our WWII Veterans. Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices by transporting our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans, World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. Of all of the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as a nation and as a culturally diverse and free society. With over one thousand World War II veterans dying each day, our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out.

Towels, Sheets and Blankets Donations. Please think of the dogs and cats who are up for adoption awaiting their forever homes when you are cleaning out your closets. We are collecting for Animal Care & Control, FOUND, PAWS & Tree House; these items are always needed by the kind folks who are caring for the animals. You may drop these off at 4243 N. Lincoln Avenue.

GreenNet Chicago. Did you know this coalition of organizations focused on quality green spaces in Chicago has created a map of over 600 community gardens in Chicago? Are the ones by you listed? If you are interested in learning more about their good work consider attending their Annual Community Gardener Networking Potluck.

Lincoln Square Kidical Mass Family Bike Ride. On October 20, Saturday, 10AM at Welles Park Gazebo, meet neighborhood families and be a part of a global movement! The rides will continue all winter, weather permitting. And look at kidical mass in other cities! For more information, please click here.

Neighborhood Happening. We want to thank the residents around the 4400 block of N. Artesian for getting together to clean up the commercial stretches on their block and on Montrose.  It looks amazing! Everyone should consider giving some needed TLC to their area on October 20th during the 47th Ward Fall Cleanup Day.

Black Watch at Broadway Armory

Dear Alderman Pawar and the Residents of the 47th Ward:

I am still overwhelmed by the warm welcome and support of Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks at Welles Park. Your neighborhood's enthusiasm for Shakespeare was astonishing-and I am truly grateful for the time we spent together in your neighborhood. Thank you for welcoming us to your park, and now I hope you will join us as we again collaborate with the Chicago Park District. From October 10 to 21, Chicago Shakespeare Theater will once again be in the neighborhoods, as we host National Theatre of Scotland's return to the nearby Broadway Armory.

Called "one of the most richly human works of art," by The New York Times, Black Watch brings the realities of war to life through the eyes of a Scottish regiment deployed to Iraq. It will return by popular demand after a sold-out run in 2011, and I encourage you to get your tickets early. I hope you will be able to experience this remarkable story-it is transcendent.

Thank you again for the support your community gives Chicago Shakespeare Theater and the culture of Chicago.  I look forward to seeing you at the Armory!
