FALL BULBS & SEED GATHERING

October 16

Tuesday at 6PM,

Waters School Community Garden

Experts discuss planting fall bulbs and how to do seed gathering.

Dear Neighbor,

I am excited to announce the Chicago Works iPhone application is now available for free at the Apple app store!  I originally developed this app with my friend Dimitrios Tragas (2Pens Media) during my campaign for alderman; I talked about how Open 311 can transform the way we deliver city services, make them more efficient and provide you with context on how your tax-dollars work for you. After taking office, I was asked to sit on the Mayor's Open 311 Steering Committee, and was able to inform and provide an aldermanic perspective to the development of Chicago's Open 311 system.

Here is how the Chicago Works app functions:

  • Once you open the app, it recognizes which ward you are in.
  • Next, you will have the option to choose from 14 types of service requests and attach a photo.
  • Once you select a service request, the app will ask you the same questions a 311 operator or someone in my office would. These questions help city departments better respond to a request.
  • Finally, once your service request is complete, it is sent directly to 311 and you are sent a tracking number. The alderman of the area where the service request was made is also sent your tracking number.

One significant innovation was Mayor Emanuel's idea to provide a FedEx-style tracking number for each service request.  You will now be able to track your service request on the web! More importantly, the tracking number will provide context to your service request because not all service requests are the same. For example, not all potholes are actually potholes - some potholes are filled in a few days and some can take a month. Why? The potholes that take a month aren't merely potholes; they may be sinkholes and indicate a sewer collapse and therefore require additional resources and inter-departmental coordination. With the tracking number, you will now get this type of contextual information. In short, you will be able to see your tax dollars at work.

I think Open 311 and the mashing of all this data will result in new startup companies and create many jobs in the coming years. The opportunities are endless and I am excited to see what happens next!

I want to thank Mayor Emanuel, John Tolva, the City's Chief Technology Officer, Brett Goldstein, the City's Chief Data Officer, and Code for America for making Open 311 a reality. Finally, I want to thank Dimitrios Tragas for putting together the first version of this app in 2010 and continuing to work on new versions after I took office.

You can download the app for free in the Apple app store by clicking here. The Andriod version is under development and we hope to release it in the next couple months.

All areas in a 3 block radius from the hospital have been baited for rodents and the buildings have been certified rat-stopped by the City of Chicago.  The 47th Ward Office is working closely with Lycee Francais during this project.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jim Poole at jim@chicago47.org or 773-549-4462.

Last year our office received many phone calls in support of our wonderful libraries. Did you know that there is a tax deductible foundation set up to support our libraries? You can even direct a contribution to a specific program or library. The Chicago Public Library Foundation supports collection development, programs and technology initiatives that connect library users to their community and to the world and ensure that all Chicagoans have the freedom to read, to learn and to discover at the Chicago Public Library. We are still collecting towels, sheets, pillows, dog crates, cat/dog carriers, pet beds, cat food and litter, straw, heated water bowls and outdoor heating pads.

Tree House Humane Society is celebrating National Feral Cat Day on Saturday, October 16, National Feral Cat Day; from 1-4 p.m., at Shelter Headquarters in Uptown, 1212 W. Carmen Ave. Tree House is a Sponsor Organization for Feral Cat Colony Caretakers in compliance with the Cook County Managed Care of Feral Cats Ordinance passed in November 2007. For more information, please visit our sister web site: TNRchicago.org, or contact our TNR counselors at 773-784-5488, ext. 234, or via email. Feral spay/neuter services are just one part of the Tree House Feral Friends TNR Program which includes a trap bank, post-surgery recovery space, food pantry and sponsorship of community TNR meetings and workshops and the administration of TNRchicago.org website.

There are an estimated 60-80 million feral cats in the United States, but thanks to a growing number of organizations and individuals participating in Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) - an increasingly widespread humane method of managing feral cat colonies - there is hope that we can drastically reduce the number of cats born on the street while respecting the lives of these animals. Feral cats make up the largest percentage of animals euthanized at shelters, so successful TNR Programs are the key to reducing euthanasia and becoming closer to a no-kill city and a no-kill nation.

Black Watch at Broadway Armory

Dear Alderman Pawar and the Residents of the 47th Ward:

I am still overwhelmed by the warm welcome and support of Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks at Welles Park. Your neighborhood's enthusiasm for Shakespeare was astonishing-and I am truly grateful for the time we spent together in your neighborhood. Thank you for welcoming us to your park, and now I hope you will join us as we again collaborate with the Chicago Park District. From October 10 to 21, Chicago Shakespeare Theater will once again be in the neighborhoods, as we host National Theatre of Scotland's return to the nearby Broadway Armory.

Called "one of the most richly human works of art," by The New York Times, Black Watch brings the realities of war to life through the eyes of a Scottish regiment deployed to Iraq. It will return by popular demand after a sold-out run in 2011, and I encourage you to get your tickets early. I hope you will be able to experience this remarkable story-it is transcendent.

Thank you again for the support your community gives Chicago Shakespeare Theater and the culture of Chicago.  I look forward to seeing you at the Armory!
