FALL BULBS & SEED GATHERING

October 16

Tuesday at 6PM,

Waters School Community Garden

Experts discuss planting fall bulbs and how to do seed gathering.

Dear Neighbor,

Next month Mayor Emanuel will propose a budget for 2013. Like last year, we will again need to close a substantial budget deficit. Since much work was done over the past year to stabilize our City the deficit will be less, but it will still be significant. We took action to reduce waste, cut certain non-essential services, build in efficiencies in various departments, change the way we deliver city services, and increase some fees and fines. It is likely that additional cuts, efficiencies and revenue will need to be explored for 2013 and none of these decisions will be easy. Once the budget is presented to City Council, my office will be holding town halls to explain the various proposals. In the meantime, if you have any ideas or suggestions on the budget, we want to hear from you.  I am looking forward to your ideas and input, and meeting with you as the budget process moves forward.

Happy autumnal equinox and have a pleasant weekend.

Sincerely,

Ameya

Ravenswood Hospital Structural Demolition

American Demolition, Inc. has nearly completed asbestos abatement in the Ravenswood Hospital Tower.  Demolition of the tower is expected to begin the week of September 24th.  The site will be fenced in the near future on the lines indicate in this map.  Below, please find the current schedule for this demolition work.

  • Above Grade Demolition (Adler Pavilion): October and November 2012 (could begin as early as 9/24)
  • Above Grade Demolition (Wilson): December 2012 and January 2013
  • Below Grade Demolition (Adler Pavilion): December 2012
  • Below Grade Demolition (Wilson): February 2013
  • On-Site Crushing: February and March 2013
  • Backfill (Adler Pavilion): Early January 2013
  • Backfill (Wilson): End of March and early April 2013

The lot will sit idle until Lycee begins construction of their new school in 2014.  Fencing around the site will remain during the wait between demolition and construction.  Lycee hopes to complete construction in Spring 2015 and occupy their new space in Fall of 2015.

All areas in a 3 block radius from the hospital have been baited for rodents and the buildings have been certified rat-stopped by the City of Chicago.  The 47th Ward Office is working closely with Lycee Francais during this project.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jim Poole at jim@chicago47.org or 773-549-4462.

If you or anyone you know would like to join us, email Dara.

Host an International High School Student This Year!

Architectural Artifacts Hosts New ACM Concert Series
Access Contemporary Music Event @ Architectural Artifiacts
Ravenswood-based Access Contemporary Music began their residency at Architectural Artifacts this past Tuesday, September 18, with a concert of music by contemporary classical composers in the gorgeous atrium space (concert review).  ACM's mission is to present classical music as a living tradition by focusing on modern composers and teaching the music of living composers at the ACM School of Music at 1758 W. Wilson.  There are four more concerts on the series including our ever-popular Sound of Silent Film Festival, which features new scores by Chicago composers performed live to modern silent films, a collaboration with Straw Dog Theater in a live radio play based on stories by Ben Hecht and much more. More can be found online.
