Dear Neighbor,

This week, I participated in the ground-breaking of the new Metra station in Ravenswood. The new out-bound station will be completed in 2013 and the in-bound station in 2015. The station and the bridge replacements are funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the new station is estimated at $10 million. My office is working closely with Metra and Walsh Construction to manage the project and we look forward to opening the new station next year.

Ald. Pawar at Metra Groundbreaking
From Left to Right: Tim Nazanin (Aide to Rep. Quigley), Cecelia Comito (Federal Transit Administration), Alderman Pawar, Larry Huggins (Acting Metra Chairman), Alexander Clifford (Metra Executive Director), Arlene Mulder (Metra Board Member), Rep. Greg Harris

The new Metra Station and other improvements on Lawrence Avenue total over $80 million. My vision and goal for Lawrence Avenue is to create a pedestrian-friendly, bike-friendly, transit-oriented retail corridor.  Simply put, the goal is to create a new experience on Lawrence Avenue to attract new business and connect Lawrence Avenue to Lincoln Square on the west and to Andersonville on the east. All of these projects will help realize the goal for a revitalized Lawrence Avenue.

In the coming years, my office will manage these projects and continue to work to bring new business to the area.  Thank you for all your input on these projects.

Lincoln #11 Bus

I am 100% opposed to CTA's proposal to cut the #11 Lincoln Ave bus. As I have said before, the cut to service will have a disproportionate impact on seniors, low income residents, people with disabilities and students. Access to public transit is what enables seniors to age in place, connects people to employment and services, and keeps our neighborhood affordable.  I testified about all of these issues to the CTA Board at their public forum last week.

I have formally asked the CTA to reverse their decision to eliminate the #11 bus. Here is my letter to the CTA president. Please make sure your voice is heard - email the CTA.

German Fest Senior Luncheon

We had over 500 guests at the German Fest Senior Luncheon including Congressman Mike Quigley and State Representative Greg Harris. This free luncheon was organized by my office, the Himmel family, the United German-American Societies of Greater Chicago and dozens of volunteers. I would like to extend a big thank to everyone who made this great event possible!

Thank you and have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Ameya
CPS' Children First Plan
The Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools continue to work toward agreement on a new contract.  If an agreement cannot be reached, CTU plans to begin their strike on Monday.

CPS has made arrangements to keep some schools open under their Children First plan.  Below, please find information on what these schools will provide.
  • Each school will be open from 8:30am - 12:30pm
  • Breakfast and lunch will be provided to student who attend the Children First Sites
  • No yellow bus service will be provided
The following schools in the 47th Ward will be open under CPS' Children First Plan in the event an agreement cannot be reached:

For Elementary Students:
Bell Elementary (3730 N. Oakley)
McPherson Elementary (4728 N. Wolcott)

For High School Students
Lane Technical High School (2501 W. Addison)
Amundsen High School (5110 N. Damen)

CPS encourages each student to register for the Chidren First Program at cps.edu.  To complete registration you will need your student ID number, student contact information and parent contact information.  Students can also register by dialing 311.

CPS is working out details with sister agency's like the Chicago Park District to provide additional programming in the event of the strike.  As we receive more information, we will keep you updated.  It is my hope that an agreement will be reached and these contingencies will not be necessary.

If you have any questions, please contact Jim Poole in my office at 773-549-4462.

More Block Party Tales.  The 2400 block of Warner had their first block party last weekend. How do they know that it is the first? One of their neighbors has lived on the block for 52 years! Every car was moved and 99% of the families participated. The day was so much fun they are thinking of having a Halloween block party!

Would you like to have a Halloween block party? Plan one for October 27 or 28, Saturday or Sunday from 8am - 10pm, or on October 31, Wednesday from 3:30pm - 7:30pm. Preference will be given to blocks that have not had a block party this year. The forms are here. We do have to consider traffic and closures so please get your paperwork in soon. Maybe you could combine with a neighboring block for even more Halloween fun?

City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) invites you to explore their website .  Learn about the resources CCC has waiting for you such as College to Careers, Dual Enrollment, and their many Articulation Agreements!
