Chicago Public Library Offers Fine Amnesty till Sep. 7
|
In honor of the Blue Moon on August 31, from August 20 - September 7, Chicago Public Library will forgive the late fines on any materials returned to the Library. Five days or five years late, they welcome back the books, CDs, DVDs . . . and most importantly, YOU, our patron. Don't know where the book is? No problem, just pay the replacement cost and we will waive any late fees associated with it. The goals of this amnesty are to recover the items our patrons are holding on to - and to let everyone start the school year with clean library card records!

| Dear Neighbor,
Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to celebrate the unveiling of the new mural on Chase Park Fieldhouse's southern wall. "Common Threads" was designed by local artists from Green Star Movement and students from the After School Matters summer program. Teenagers from all over the city, some commuting one to two hours each way, came together to design and install the bricolage-style mural. I want to commend and thank Chase Park Supervisor Kate Peon, the Chicago Park District Area 6 Manager Deb Maddox, After School Matters and Green Star Movement for working so hard to make this project go from concept to reality. The mural is absolutely extraordinary! Our office is proud to have had the opportunity to support this project with aldermanic menu funds. You should definitely stop by Chase Park at 4701 N. Ashland Avenue to check it out. 47th Ward Bike Camp The 47th Ward Bike Camp was a success. Twenty neighborhood children selected by Revere Park and the Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club participated in a five-day bike skills and safety camp. All twenty riders went home with brand new Schwinn bikes and helmets! To learn more about this pilot program, please read the August 16th edition of the 47th Ward newsletter, found here. |

Edgar Fellowship - University of Illinois Last week, I spent a couple days at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an Edgar Fellow. The Edgar Fellowship was developed by former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar. Forty leaders were selected statewide to discuss state and municipal budget issues, pensions and healthcare in a non-partisan setting. It was a great experience and we heard from many speakers like former White House Chief-of-Staff Bill Daley, Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Governor Edgar. To learn more about this program, click here. To see the full list of participants, please click here. School Supply Drive Finally, I want to remind you that the 47th Ward School Supply Drive comes to an end tomorrow, August 31. If you would like to donate supplies, please stop by the ward office. These school supplies will be distributed to children by the Common Pantry and Ravenswood Community Services. I want to extend a big thank you to those who have donated - these supplies go a long way!
Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,

Thanks and Kudos to Eli Suzukovich, one of our ward's most learned native plants horticulturists. The tour that Eli gave to the interested group of gardeners who visited the American Indian Center (1630 W. Wilson Avenue) gardens this past week was not only informative it was also inspiring. We were treated to a passionate talk on the history of the entire area going back centuries and lessons on how to attract animals, birds and insects, and the benefits of bio-diversity in gardening. We will ask Eli for another tour of these lovely gardens next spring.
Are you planting/caring for a corner or parkway or other community garden? Would you like free perennials? Openlands is having another plant giveaway on September 22. Email dara@chicago47.org or call 773-549-2735.
Would you like to have a Halloween block party? Plan one for October 27 or 28, Saturday or Sunday from 8am - 10pm, or on October 31-Wednesday from 3:30pm - 7:30pm. Preference will be given to blocks that have not had a block party this year. The forms are on our website. We do have to consider traffic and closures so please get your paperwork in soon. Maybe you could combine with a neighboring block for even more Halloween fun?

They're not just Jack & Ginger's. They're yours.
|
Offering the services you want and the vibe you love, their cozy neighborhood space and welcoming staff can become a big part of your dog's day and a fun, time-saving part of your routine. It's more than drop off & pick up; at Jack & Ginger's, meet up, hang out, grab a coffee, and share the love. They provide doggie day care, walks, and grooming that keep your best pal stimulated, socialized, and happily tuckered out-all while looking great! We also offer events and connections that highlight our commitment to peace, love, and understanding-and to giving back. Our pet-related workshops, art exhibits, and a range of philanthropic activities seek to contribute to a better, greener life, neighborhood, and world. Through programs like A Dollar a Dog a Day, they share a portion of our proceeds with a rotating list of animal welfare organizations, local and worldwide. Let them know if you have a favorite animal-related charity that they should consider! A Dollar a Dog a Day That's right. They donate one dollar for every dog in our day care each day. Woof! They'll bet you agree that dogs are among our best teachers. Dogs know who can be trusted, they know when they're safe, and they respond to people and their surroundings with total honesty. In other words, they know it's your dog who'll be interviewing them, and they hope that their experience along with their caring and slightly funky approach get us the nod-or the wag of the tail.
