|
The 47th Ward Office is looking for volunteers to participate in a new Quality of Life Committee. This committee will work on keeping the 47th Ward one of the best places to live in Chicago. We will create a best practices guide for construction, partner with CAPS to increase neighborhood participation in CAPS and schedule information workshops and other events focused on public safety, and other initiatives to keep our neighborhoods clean and safe. If you're interested in working with this committee please contact Jim in the 47th Ward Office at jim@chicago47.org. We hope to have our first meeting in the middle of September. |
Chicago Public Library Offers Fine Amnesty till Sep. 7
|
In honor of the Blue Moon on August 31, from August 20 - September 7, Chicago Public Library will forgive the late fines on any materials returned to the Library. Five days or five years late, they welcome back the books, CDs, DVDs . . . and most importantly, YOU, our patron. Don't know where the book is? No problem, just pay the replacement cost and we will waive any late fees associated with it. The goals of this amnesty are to recover the items our patrons are holding on to - and to let everyone start the school year with clean library card records! |

| Dear Neighbor,
The 47th Ward is happy to welcome new 19th District Commander, Elias Voulgaris, who has been with the Chicago police department since 1985. He was actually at the Town Hall station earlier in his career and has extensive experience in tactical teams, and with narcotics and gang investigations. Commander Voulgaris and my office have been in touch and we will be meeting over the coming weeks to discuss issues in our community. We would like to thank Commander Kenny for his years of dedicated service to our neighborhoods, meeting with our constituents and addressing issues head-on. We all wish him the very best in his new position in the police department. Target RATS. You may have seen the recent media coverage on the increased reports of rats in Chicago (click here). My office has received, as have many other wards, numerous complaints about rat sightings especially in the alleys. My constituent services team immediately enters rat sighting locations into the 311 city service request system. Although the city does lace alleys with rat poison on a regular basis, rats still have their picking of food scraps from the rows and rows of garbage carts, dumpsters and oftentimes open bags or spillover near these containers. This is the single reason rats exist in our cities--abundant food supply. And with about 590 blocks in the 47th Ward the City doesn't have the resources to monitor these alleys alone. Everyone of us can help reduce the rat population by keeping an eye on these trash receptacles in our alleys. We ask that you: - Do not overfill your trash receptacles such that the lid does not seal close.
- Try to put food scraps in separate smaller bags and place at the bottom of your containers. If possible, save non-food trash till next collection if it'll overfill the receptacle.
- Never put a bag with food scraps or food wrappers outside a trash receptacle--rats will chew right into this for a quick meal.
- If you have a blue cart, put as much clean (without food soiling) paper and plastics (quick rinse if not completely empty) in there which will save room in the black carts for food scraps and non-recycleables.
- If your cart has any type of hole, chewed-off area or a missing/defective lid, report this to 311 immediately.
- Encourage your neighbors to follow these guidelines.
- If you see a regular occurrence of overfilled receptacles or bags left by them that containing food scraps/wrappers in the ward, report it to my office. It doesn't matter if the receptacles are for houses, apartment buildings, businesses or restaurants.
- If you, your neighbors, your block or your block club wishes to systematically survey the receptacles in your and/or nearby alleys, let my office know and we'll give you a checksheet form to use.
My staffperson Dara Salk has taken the initiative to bring the Tree House feral cat program to interested residents in the ward. This program discourages rats from settling in a particular area (info here). Let us know of any other ideas you have to help curb the rat population in our neighborhoods. West Nile Virus. With an increased number of reported cases of West Nile Virus in Illinois and the country please become familiar with the symptoms listed here. You can help control mosquitos in your neighborhood by following these tips. Berteau Greenway Report. Last week the transportation department presented a proposed design for the Berteau Neighborhood Greenway at a meeting attended by over 60 community members. A lot of feedback was heard which the city will consider as they make their final adjustments to the design. Once completed the design goes on to be reviewed by other agencies and departments, and construction planning then can begin. CTA Bus Route Reductions. I have been made aware of the CTA's plans to eliminate some bus routes with the intention of adding service to other routes. I am concerned that one of the routes facing elimination is the #11 Lincoln bus. I am asking the CTA to provide more specific data on the ridership of the routes facing cuts as part of this initiative and consider this carefully; there may be impacts on residents and businesses in our ward that are not realized. Click here for the CTA press release on the initiative and click here for their presentation on the topic. A hearing will be held on September 4th at 6:00 PM at CTA HQ, 576 N. Lake Street for residents to get more information and/or testify.
As I said to the Chicago Tribune about this on Wednesday: "I'm not happy about it. I want to make sure this cut is not disproportionately impacting low-income residents or seniors. We're talking about making different parts of the city more affordable, increasing public transportation options. This kind of flies in the face of that." (full article)
German-American Fest Senior Luncheon. As many of you know this is a grand tradition in our ward that many of seniors look forward to. Thanks to the German American Societies for their generosity to our seniors! Dear Gentle Readers,
Please help support Chappell School's Donor Drive! (flyer & form)
We just heard about Ravenswood Elementary School's new website --> http://ravenswoodelementary.org. Rumor has it you can find these valuable bits of information! The unifed school calendar, important school forms, the school's lunch menus and procedures, a list of "Shop for Ravenswood" merchants, a new electronics communications subscription option and a convenient Google-powered language preference options.
ATTENTION! ... Is There a Block Party in your Future?
There have been almost 150 block parties in our ward this summer!
It is not too late for you to have a block party this year. There are many beautiful weekends ahead for you and your neighbors to have a fun day together.
This comes from the 2400 block of Pensacola: Beside our traditional pie contest, mojitos, kids games, neighborhood raffle and pet parade, to say nothing of Bob & Sarah's awesome sidewalk arcade!, we added sidewalk chalk art and a book swap to the mix. We even raised a little money for our new Corner Gardens.
The 2500 block of Hutchinson is creating history: These neighbors have been decorating white sheet banners for many years. The children can see how their handiwork has evolved over time. They hang these colorful banners across the street. They have formed a neighborhood singing group and they entertain everyone with their sweet harmony.
Our neighbors on the 1900 block of Warner have a generous idea:
We will be collecting school supplies at our block party for the 47th ward school supply drive. I wondered if any other blocks had been doing so. It seems like an excellent way to help out the community and make a difference all while having fun with neighbors. Food drives seem like they would also be a great idea at block parties. We all have such a great time at these events, but we have neighbors in our community in need as well.
Would you like to have a Halloween block party? Plan one for October 27 or 28, Saturday or Sunday from 8am - 10pm, or on October 31-Wednesday from 3:30pm - 7:30pm. Preference will be given to blocks that have not had a block party this year. The forms are on our website. We do have to consider traffic and closures so please get your paperwork in soon. Maybe you could combine with a neighboring block for even more Halloween fun?
As always I am pleased to hear from you at dara@chicago47.org .... Dara |
