| Dear Neighbor,
I am continually amazed by the wonderful acts of kindness and service everyday folks make in the 47th Ward. Here are just a few. Local businessman Andy Khalish, owner of Ravenswood Catering, serves 125 meals every week for Ravenswood Community Services clients; Greater Rockwell-area resident Nate Hutcheson organizing a monthly family bike ride; Mark Rickmeier creating free outdoor movie night for families in the ward at Bethany UCC; and High school student Tre Cintron offering to water the newly planted sod for a neighbor he didn't even know while this family is on vacation. I think of all the dedicated people who volunteer at Common Pantry, Ravenswood Community Services, Gateway to Learning, Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club, their local school council, their local park advisory council, their local block club, and many more organizations, and I realize how strong and caring our neighbors are. If you know someone who is helping others and making our ward a better place to live, please let me know. I would like to express my appreciation on behalf of the 47th Ward. Recently we have taken on a number of initiatives to expand the city's bicycle network in the ward. While these improvements promote bicycling on our streets, many residents and block clubs have reported concerns about some bicyclists who don't follow the rules of the road. In response, we have been working with the Chicago Police, the City's Bike Safety and Education team, and the Chicago Bicycle Ambassadors on a number of targeted operations to enforce the traffic laws that relate to bicycles and thereby enhance bike safety. Over the past two weeks we have had three events in which Bike Ambassadors and the police enforced laws, distributed bike lights and provided bike safety literature to passing cyclists.
In response to your feedback, we have been making revisions to our weekly newsletter. In last week's issue, we moved the table of contents/hyper-links section to the left-hand column. We have made flyers submitted to our newsletter more readable and we are using links for additional information instead of putting it into the body of the newsletter. Please continue to give us your input! You have also told us to add more forms, database, guides and other information to our website for easy and convenient access. Please take a moment to check out some recent additions to our website. We have added an interactive map of major capital projects in the 47th Ward, public safety tips and electronic forms for a number of routine matters handled by the 47th Ward Office. We are also working on improving communication between the ward council, various ward committees and residents. We have already started working on a ward council webpage that will link folks to the various committees and their work. You can see the beginnings of that page here. We will also be having each group in the ward provide a front-door email to simplify connecting with your neighbors. If you have any ideas for our website or recommendations on how we could make improvements, please email us. And our summer intern Annie finished the 47th Ward Restaurant Guide-please see it in Ward Guides. Can you believe we have around 260 restaurants in 3.1 square miles. Before Annie leaves us she is finishing up a 47th Ward Resource Guide and ward guides for Arts & Culture, Parks & Recreation and Senior issues. Our other summer intern Abdul, from Northside College Prep High School and the Mikva Challenge, is working on a comprehensive database of every block in the ward that will include information on congressional districts, school attendance areas, street sweeping days, chamber of commerce area, etc. This will be another time saver you can access directly from our website. Sincerely,
|

Tax Bill Payment Due August 1st
|
In February this year you may have received the Long Term Exemption and/or the Senior Tax Exemption forms. These exemptions give you the most money back on your property tax bill so it's very important that you complete the forms as soon as possible (especially given the fact that the tax bills were sent out on time for the first time in years). 99% of folks will not lose their Long Term Exemption; however you must fill out and return the form yearly. If you did not receive and/or return the exemptions or have questions, please call 312-603-6380 (Commissioner Fritchey's Office) or 312-603-4210 (Commissioner Gainer's Office) for additional assistance.

Global Explorers Kids
|
Global Explorers Kids is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, incorporated December 2005 and located in Lincoln Square. Dedicated to providing children with the opportunity to explore the diversity of the world's peoples and helping them to understand and respect different cultures, using the arts as a catalyst towards learning, the organization grew out of the founders' involvement in fine arts, arts education, arts administration, anthropology, and world travel. Recognizing a lack of cultural understanding in US society, the founders saw the arts as a means of helping children - and thus future generations - cross cultural boundaries.
Global Explorers Kids uses a child-centered, hands-on, multi-disciplinary artistic approach to exploring the world's cultures, utilizing children's natural curiosity and desire to learn about others.
In a world shrinking due to globalization and a local community that is increasingly diverse, unfortunately, prejudices are still prevalent and ethnic communities tend to exist in isolated pockets, rarely intermingling. Studies show that children learn new cultural patterns easily; it is important that their early learning aids in their understanding and respect of differences, rather than perpetuating stereotypes and prejudice.
Global Explorers Kids seeks to teach children from an early age about the diversity of the world's peoples, helping them to understand and respect different cultures. To learn more about this initiative, check out their most recent newsletter.
