Dear Neighbor,
In last week's newsletter, I talked about the Ravenswood Station project going before the Community Development Commission (CDC). I am pleased to announce that the CDC approved the Ravenswood Station project unanimously. The retail development will include a Mariano's grocery store and a L.A. Fitness health club. My office has been working with the developers, the Department of Housing and Economic Development (DHED) and the Mayor's Office to move this project forward. The next step is an introduction to City Council. This project is progressing and we are targeting a groundbreaking in mid to late fall. Lawrence Avenue Streetscape The coordination of all the major projects on Lawrence Avenue--the streetscape, Metra track reconstruction and the Ravenswood Station retail project-has been occurring behind the scenes. The advanced planning and design for the Lawrence streetscape is going very well. Some last elements of design and engineering are being finalized and the project began the bid process. We expect to see construction begin as soon as weather conditions allow in the spring of 2013; at that time there will be continued coordination with other projects, the local chambers of commerce and businesses, and residents of the area. Jim Poole and Bill Higgins in my office will continue to meet with local stakeholders to coordinate construction activity to limit disruptions. I am very excited to see a transformed Lawrence Avenue taking shape next year! Cubs Stadium at Clark Park Great news! My office is working with the Chicago Cubs and the Clark Park Advisory Council to schedule a ground-breaking for the City of Chicago's first IHSA regulation baseball field. My office is very proud to have led the effort to get this park built. I'll send you more details soon. 47th Ward Zoning Process After taking office, my office put together a Zoning Advisory Committee to review and screen projects that require zoning changes and special use permits. Every application is posted online regardless of the project's viability. This is real transparency because you see the project details from the start. This committee is made up of 47th Ward residents who are charged with reviewing projects, looking at building context and assessing the impacts the project would have on the surrounding neighborhood. In addition, my office reaches out the local block clubs, neighborhood organizations and community groups to seek input and schedule community meetings (click here for 47th Ward Zoning Process). On major projects, like the Ravenswood Station, my office schedules multiple community meetings. In fact, my office held four community meetings on the Ravenswood Station to ensure everyone in the ward had an opportunity to provide feedback and input. On that project, community input was incorporated into the plans and were reflected in each subsequent community meeting. That is, the community was brought into the process on the front end, both on the TIF financing and the design, to help inform the final project. The final project was a truly a result of a collective process that involved multiple stakeholders.
One more thing, Bill Higgins of the 47th Ward Office's band, Furious Frank, is playing at the Taste of Chicago this Sunday, July 15th at 4:00pm. To see their facebook invite, please click here. Join me in watching this great klezmer, gypsy, folk-punk, R&B band on Sunday. Hope to see you there! Sincerely,

White House Names Paul W. Hamann a "Champion of Change"
On July 12th, the White House honored Paul W. Hamann, President and CEO of The Night Ministry, as one of thirteen individuals who have made a significant difference in the way their communities combat homelessness among children and youth as a "Champion of Change." Paul was honored for his leadership of The Night Ministry and the organization's rich history of providing youth with an innovative system of care. The Night Ministry's youth housing programs provide structured, safe and supportive living situations to youth from all backgrounds who face multiple, difficult challenges. Through The Night Ministry's Youth Outreach Van and Youth Shelter Programs, they work on the ground in Chicago neighborhoods to reach adults, teens, pregnant girls and new moms who have nowhere else to go.
"I am extremely honored to receive this honor on behalf of the staff, volunteers and supporters of The Night Ministry as well as those whom we serve. Our work together is making an impact on the streets of Chicago and in the way our government addresses youth homelessness in America. While today is a day to celebrate all that we have achieved, I look forward to finding new and even more effective ways to meet the needs of Chicago's youth," said Hamann.
The Night Ministry is a Chicago-based organization, with an office at 4711 N. Ravenswood Ave. in the 47th Ward, that works to provide housing, healthcare and human connection to members of our community struggling with poverty or homelessness. North Center Bike Tour this Saturday
North Center, Chicago Community Area #5, sits five miles northwest of the Loop. Uncultivated and untamed until the end of the 19th century, North Center is now a vibrant and successful near-north side community prized for its historic homes and friendly neighborhood streets. The roots of the community's early days in Chicago were rooted in brickyards and light industry. Many of the residents were laborers that worked in the factories and clay pits on the banks of the North Branch of the Chicago River. Over the years, the area was transformed by the depression, the War, the postwar years and the forces of city dynamics. It is today home to several neighborhoods, the namesake North Center, Roscoe Village and St. Bens, each brimming with interesting architecture and character. Join tour leader Lee Diamond, a bike and architectural aficionado, on July 14 at Revere Park, 2509 W. Irving Park Road at 11AM (the tour ends around 3PM). Tickets $9-register here.

Air Pollution Action Day
The Partners for Clean Air and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) have issued an Air Pollution Action Day alertfor the Chicago Metropolitan area for Friday, July 13th. High temperatures and low wind speeds may trap air pollutants resulting in increased and unhealthy levels of ozone and particulate matter for sensitive populations in the Chicago metropolitan area.
Individuals with respiratory or pulmonary disorders as well as active children and adults should take special precautions and follow their physician-prescribed regimen. Residents should keep cool and limit physical activity.
You can help decrease air pollution on Air Pollution Action Days by taking the following "green actions:"
- Ride public transit, carpool, walk or bike.
- If you must drive, avoid idling, consolidate errands and run them after 7 p.m. when sunlight is not as strong.
- Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs.
- Raise your thermostat at least 2 degrees.
- Turn off and unplug any electronics not in use.
- Use environmentally-friendly household and cleaning products.
- Avoid using gasoline-powered equipment.
- When grilling, use a charcoal chimney or gas grill instead of lighter fluid.
The Department of Health works closely with the IEPA to monitor local air quality conditions. It is possible that additional Air Pollution Action Days may be called. Check your local daily air quality forecast or sign-up to receive notices via email at www.cleantheair.org.
