Dear Neighbor,

We have another busy weekend coming up in the 47th Ward. Tonight my office at 4243 N. Lincoln Avenue is hosting a reception for the artists from the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative of the OpenWall Gallery's new exhibit. Tomorrow begins the North Center farmers market, joining the two Lincoln Square farmers markets just opened that serve our 47th Ward community. You can also take a tour of beautiful gardens in North Center and visit the family friendly festivities of Epiphany Church's Summerfest this Saturday. Beginning next week is the Welles Park Gazebo concert series and the Lincoln Square Giddings Plaza concert series began last Thursday.

Chicago Printmakers Collaborative

This week my staff met with environmental activists of the 47th Ward to look at developing a monthly green talk series and a green council to prioritize and work on environmental issues impacting our neighborhoods; if you wish to be involved here email Ernie. Next week my monthly 47th Ward Zoning Advisory Council will have met for the twelfth time since I become alderman. I wish to salute all 15 members who have given their time to review a variety of developments, ascertain their benefits to the ward and create recommendations for informing my decision-making. If you feel you have a particular expertise or set of experiences relevant to zoning & development issues please consider applying to be on this advisory committee.

The 47th Ward Senior Council is another wonderful group of neighbors who have been working on planning events, programming and building community for our neighbors, 55 years of age & better.  It is important that we all take the time this weekend to check on our elderly or disabled neighbors to be sure they are doing well with the heat we are experiencing.  If you are interested in joining this hard-working group, please contact Dara.

Have a safe and happy weekend.

Sincerely,

Ameya

47th Ward Master Gardeners

We had so much fun this past Tuesday evening at our first Gardening Workshop! No matter how many years we have been gardening there is always more to learn. What better way to learn than from our own expert neighbors who live and garden right here in our ward.

Thanks so much to both Patricia and Eli for giving us so much expert information regarding composting and naturalizing native plants on corners and in parkways.  More to come on native plants because there is more to learn and because they are so very good for our city.

Our next workshop will be July 17th, Tuesday,  6:30pm. The topics will be shade gardening and trees. Bring your questions on any gardening topic. As always children and dogs are welcome. -Dara

Infrastructure Update

W. Eastwood Avenue from Damen to Leavitt

Between late June and late August, the Dept. of Water Management (DWM) will be replacing the old 1891 water main under Eastwood Avenue between Damen and Leavitt. To see the residents' notice click here

N. Wayne Avenue from Irving Park to 600 Feet South

The sewer main under the 3900 block of Wayne Avenue is currently being replaced by DWM private contractors and the street is not open to traffic from 8AM to 4PM on weekdays (M-F). To see the residents' notice click here

W. Montrose Avenue from Lake Shore Drive to Damen

The City of Chicago is performing a number of arterial resurfacing projects around the city that include Montrose Avenue, from Lake Shore Drive to Damen Avenue. Crews are reconstructing curbs & gutters, adjusting utility structures and resurfacing only those sections of the streets that need repair. Other improvements include adding concrete bus pads at bus stops to prevent the common asphalt "push-ups." The entire project is expected to be completed July 4th.

Peoples Gas Main Replacement

Construction crews from Peoples Gas and their contractor Northern Pipeline continue their multi-year gas main replacement project in the 47th Ward. Sod has now been laid (grass seed in some instances) in a number of areas throughout the ward to restore damage to city parkways. Please remember the tips below to care for your sod once it has been installed.

Sod Care Tips (Courtesy of Landscape America)

  1. Start watering IMMEDIATELY after the sod is laid. For the first 7-10 days.  Keep a close eye on your turf. Give it just enough water to keep it from drying out. After that, apply an inch of water every 7 - 10 days.  Walk on the sod - especially the edges - so the edges and turf make contact with the soil.

To measure an 1" of water coming from a sprinkler, place a coffee can on the lawn in the midst of the sprinkler. A good watering once per week is usually better for your lawn than light daily watering. Once your lawn is established it is generally better to water in the morning hours.
  2. By about the 10th day, allow the sod to dry out enough to mow it. Make sure your mower is in good mechanical condition with a sharp blade. Set your mower on the highest setting and mow the lawn very carefully. The frequency in which you will have to mow your lawn depends on weather conditions.

  • West Side of N. Ravenswood from Irving Park to Berteau (Wall 9)-drill, set & pour soldier beams & install lagging.

Tree House Working Cats Program

"Nothing Works Better Than Mother Nature."

Cats - Not Rats! Simple & Easy, Humane & Effective, Long-term Solutions

The Tree House Working Cats Project is a "green" program that relocates sterilized, vaccinated feral cats that would otherwise have been euthanized to locales that have problems with rats and mice. Rodents are repelled by the cats' odor and leave areas with cats. Most cats will hunt and catch rodents on occasion, but if they are fed regularly, cats usually won't eat them. Traditional methods commonly used to control rats tend to be short-term and not permanent solutions. Many involve poison that are dangerous to pets and the environment. The "working cats" program is effective, sustainable, humane and environmentally-friendly-a win-win-win situation!

Since its inception in 2009, nearly 50 Tree House "working cats" have been successfully placed in several private city and suburban backyards, dozens of barns and a factory where there has been an almost immediate end to their rodent problem within a week of welcoming their cats, including the 47th Ward locations! If you are interested in learning more about how you can adopt some working cats, please contact our TNR Hotline at: 773-784-5488 ext. 234 or  kari@treehouseanimals.org.

Ravenswood Outdoor Movie

Outdoor Movie Nights in the Neighborhood!

When Chicago's warmer summer weather allows it, we set up an outdoor movie night each month to take advantage of the season (generally May - Sept). In October, when it gets a bit too cold for movies, we set up a haunted house and pumpkin patch.

The lawn space opens early for people to spread out their picnic blankets, mingle with their friends and neighbors, and grab a bite to eat. Before show time - we grill out and BBQ for a few hours while we wait for dusk. People are encouraged to bring their own spread - but we supply burgers, brats, hot dogs, soda, water, and tons of good candy movie. (There is a $6 fee for the movie to help offset the cost of each month's movie license. All of the grill food, soda, candy, and popcorn are on the house!

The events are BYOBlankets and BYOB.

At dusk, we fire up the industrial sized popcorn machine, the lawn speakers, and the projector to start the movie!

We've got a great location in Ravenswood for our outdoor cinema. Ravenswood Elementary School has allowed us to use their parking lot - so no problems hunting for a space! The movie itself will be on the large lawn space of Bethany Church - 4250 North Paulina Street. Follow the scent of butter melting on movie popcorn if you can't find us.

See you at the Movies!
