New but Not...

Happy September!  As we get back into the school year with with homework assignments, reading lists, and programming for fall don't forget about contacting your local school media specialists to let them know about your library's resources and services.

Don't put the summer manual away just yet. All of the Cooperative Summer Library Program (CSLP) manuals are meant to be used throughout the year.  See if there is a program activity or two that could be used for fall or spring. Take a moment and browse through older CSLP and Florida Library Youth Program (FLYP) manuals for more ideas.

Out of the Box

Out of the Box is a place where we share library activities and programs. This month features a terrific FLYP Adult Summer Reading Program from Collier County.

In June 2012 Collier County Public Library (CCPL) patrons were invited to kick off our first Adult Summer Reading Program, "Between the Covers." The program provided adults in our community with a unique motivation to enjoy reading all summer long. A total of 775 adults from all of our ten branches read "between the covers" of 3,361 unique titles totaling 4,719 books.  By all accounts, the program was a huge success.

The promotional push started on Monday, June 4, when our patrons were encouraged to check out books, audio books and e-books, pick up a registration bookmark(s), and start reading. The bookmarks offered space for the patron's name, book title and a short review of the book. Patrons received a "Book Buck" for each completed bookmark which could be used to purchase items at future book sales. Most importantly, the completed bookmark counted as an entry in the big raffle. Our message stated, "The more books you read and bookmarks you complete, the more chances you have to win." Prizes included gift cards and gift baskets with values from five to 100 dollars provided by 28 local businesses happy to sponsor the event.

To keep interest alive during June and July, CCPL presented eight programs and facilitated book discussion that tied into the theme. Additional promotional items created using graphics from the Collaborative Summer Library Program kept the interest high among staff members and the public.  These included a brochure, poster and flyer in addition to the bookmark and Book Buck. A press release and article in the local newspaper also generated a lot of interest. The library website and bright boards located in the branches reached many potential participants. In order for staff to help generate excitement for the program, we promoted it in our employee newsletter and added it to the agenda of staff meetings.

Collier County summer raffle table

The Grand Finale Party was held on Monday, July 30. When the party room doors opened, 122 attendees were met with upbeat music, colorful  posters, a sumptuous buffet and tables displaying the raffle prizes. A slideshow in the background featured book jackets of the most popular titles with patron reviews. Eager participants went to their tables and found a book bag, compliments of the Friends of the Library of Collier County, a reading resource guide, a flyer promoting our fall book discussions, a program survey and a coupon from one of our sponsors.

The event began with a presentation welcoming the participants and sharing the goals of the program; to encourage adults to read for pleasure, to establish the library as a vital part of community life, to attract new patrons to the library and increase circulation. We shared interesting statistics and thanked all the attendees for their enthusiasm. Attendees particularly enjoyed talking with their table-mates, discussing their favorite read and choosing one title to review for the entire group.

The two surveys created to get feedback from both staff members and program participants confirmed what we had already guessed --Adult Summer Reading was a total success!
