2012 FLYP Program: Crafting
| | Jennifer Hopwood, Brevard County Library System and one of the 2012 FLYP workshop presenters, has posted on the popular pinterest website her collection of great craft ideas to support the 2012 NIGHT theme.
From the link above, browse through her pinned photos and look for the free, downloadable Star Wars stick puppets and memory game plus how to make Steampunk goggles. Or view the link to the website that has crafts just for boys. Natalie Houston, Orange County Library System, is also a pinterest fan. She suggested following Teen Programming in Libraries, a collaborative board.
Jennifer plans to talk about the pinterest website as a valuable planning tool during her FLYP workshop presentations and her Storytelling 2.0 webinars that are sponsored by ALA. If you did not sign up for a pinterest account to access the Flannel Friday ideas from November's issue, Jennifer recommends that you sign up for an account. She wrote: "I have been using pinterest.com to find craft ideas. It is a great site. You post image links to idea boards. When you click on the image, it will redirect you to the original website for instructions or other details. Pinterest allows you to connect your media accounts so when you pin, the links can also be shared with your twitter and facebook accounts making sharing easy. I think of it as virtual window shopping. :)"
And while window shopping, notice that most of the original crafts and games are from moms who blog. |
FLYP-PER: Programming for Early Readers
| | Storytime Prop
Melissa Depper, a Colorado children's librarian, has a blog for her interests in early literacy and early childhood programs. She made a cardboard tube prop for her bookmobile storytime librarian because it is an all-in-one prop, no flannelboard or separate pieces necessary. Not knowing what it is named, she calls hers " Storytime Paper Towel Tube Song Prop Thingy." Her photo above is one that Melissa made for "Five Speckled Frogs." She stated: "When you start the song, all frogs are right side up, on top of the log. As you sing and as each frog jumps into the pool, you rotate the ring around the tube until the frog is upside down and facing backwards and the pool is facing the audience instead." |
Programming Ideas For Children and Families

Video Production Program Please promote the second annual CSLP teen video contest - encourage your teens to create a video suporting summer reading at public libraries, including their interpretations of the 2012 CSLP teen slogan Own the Night. All contest information and Florida's entry form is on the CSLP website.
To generate entries, also consider hosting a filmmaking workshop. The FLYP Materials website has a four-minute lesson on video storytelling. Kenny Mikey teaches teens simple tricks and tips on the visual storytelling aspects of video production.
Carissa Christner, a Wisconsin youth services librarian, created a kit for a fun filmmaking library activity. The program's objective is to practice writing and filming. The kit is free to share and modify to suit your library's needs: Library As Incubator Project.

Innovate and Inspire
| | The brainchild of Science Librarian Sean Stone (pictured above), what began as a no-frills vendor pushcart has been transformed into the cheapest branch library ever. Read more about this innovative project in Char Booth's blog post about a library on wheels.
Orange County Library System has a tag at the bottom of their emails that asks email recipients to think of a donation to the library as an ideal gift for a wedding, graduation or retirement.
