2012 FLYP Program
| | CSLP Manuals
By now, each library system's FLYP contact has received the 2012 CSLP manuals. Please begin using the manual now as the materials and the NIGHT theme are for year-round use. In September, youth services staff who received a CSLP manual will be asked to evaluate the manual's materials and provide a summary of their personal use.
Of special note, CSLP manual editors recognized Jennifer M. Parsick, a teen services librarian at Osceola County Library System, as a contributor to the teen manual. The CSLP editors incorporated eight of her nine ideas, including a vampire event, a werewolf party complete with howling contest, and a night of relaxation with a yoga instructor and making spa products. Many thanks to Jennifer!
Contact Patricia Romig (patricia.romig@dos.myflorida.com) if a DVD manual is defective or if you need CD replacements for the DVDs.
CSLP Teen Video Contest
Teens who create Florida's winning video promoting summer reading at a public library will win $275 and a $150 award for their library. Florida's registration form is posted on the CSLP website under the Participating States link. Entries are due February 14.

| | Zombies Abound
The Sarnia Library (Ontario) has been acknowledging the zombie apocalypse for years with their Zombiefest, which includes an annual parade of zombies who walk through downtown. One librarian arranged for local makeup artists to help prepare this year's 40 walking zombies. The walk began at the library, continued through several downtown stores that had requested a visit by the zombies, and then convened back at the library for snacks and a showing of the movie Night of the Living Dead. Although Zombiefest is an annual event scheduled around Halloween, consider planning this low cost NIGHT-themed adventure as a prelude to a zombie program.
Zombiefest program information from the library's website and The Observer, October 3, 2011.

| | Paper Puzzles
From the Unique Projects website, view Complico Paper Folding Puzzle, a game of multiple paper folding challenges that range in difficulty. According to the site, Complico is Latin for to fold together and "...that is exactly what you will do with this simple but ingenious project. After quickly printing and preparing any of the many puzzles that we have provided, you are ready to try and solve them. Beware, however, the difficulty varies from joyfully simple to satisfyingly tricky to devilishly complex! This is a perfect game to fold up and keep in your pocket so that it is ready to play whenever you have some spare time." Print the puzzles at the bottom of the website, provide teens with scissors and directions and then see what solutions they develop.

Florida's first-place winners will receive cash awards and Target gift cards. January 6 is the entry deadline. For contest guidelines and writing tips, go to the Library of Congress website. Email Nancy S. Murray, Broward County Library (NMURRAY@broward.org), for a PDF of the promotional poster shown on the website.
