Greetings!

I enjoyed talking with all of you during the Project Compass online conversations over the last month and I hope you found them helpful. I am amazed at the wide variety of projects - large and small - that you have started to support workforce recovery activities in your local community.

I look forward to hearing about your programs as we all continue to support workforce recovery in Florida. Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can help you with your efforts and don't forget the resources available on the Project Compass Florida website.

Changes to Unemployment Claims Process

Several changes to Florida's unemployment compensation rules took effect August, 1, 2011, as part of recent reforms. The major changes include a requirement that initial and ongoing unemployment claims must be filed online - no more filing by phone. The Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation (AWI)recommends using computers at a public library or One-Stop Career Center Logolocal One-Stop employment center.

The Division and staff from the AWI Unemployment Compensation Program will offer a webinar, Helping Patrons File for Unemployment Under the New Florida Law, that will provide more information on how libraries can support patrons affected by these changes.

State officials say online filing will be more efficient and save a projected $4.7 million per year in administrative costs. AWI's unemployment compensation hotline will be available to answer questions about the filing process.

Help Wanted

Linda Bruno needs your help!  In February 2012 she will be offering an on-site workshop covering "compassion fatigue" in the library environment. To make sure the content is relevant to you, she would love to have your input as she develops the workshop...

  • What would you like to see covered in a compassion fatigue workshop?
  • What drains you when you are working with patrons?
  • How do you personally sense that your helping energy is being depleted?
  • How do you recover when you are totally drained?
  • Are there instances that have been particularly difficult?

Email responses to Linda at [email protected].

Web Resources for Job Seekers

Many libraries have created or enhanced their websites to provide ready access to a variety of online resources to help job seekers. WebJunction maintains a list of library websites that will be helpful if you're library is beginning to develop a resource page for job seekers and small businesses.

If your library maintains a webpage linking to resources for job seekers please contribute to the Workforce Resources Wiki page or email the link to your library's site to Jennifer Peterson ([email protected]).

All Project Compass programs and materials are made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by WebJunction and the State Library of North Carolina; and by funds from a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Florida Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services.
