Welcome
A Message From the President

The January 2012 Global Specialty Lens Symposium
meeting will mark the two year anniversary of the Scleral
Lens Education Society!  Now that the SLS is firmly established, the Board members have decided to have an annual ascension of the four officer positions with Dr. Christine Sindt taking over as President. The opening of the Treasurer position and three Chair positions will be filled by a nomination and voting process that will be carried out by the existing board
before the GSLS meeting.

It has been an honor to serve as President, but renewed leadership will grow the Scleral Lens Education Society's educative foundation in the contact lens community.

Please don't hesitate to contact us through the website (www.sclerallens.org) if you should have any questions or comments.

Best regards,
Greg DeNaeyer, OD, FAAO
President, Scleral Lens Education Society

The Scleral Lens Education Society is hosting a comprehensive fundamentals lecture on scleral lens fitting at the Global Specialty Lens Symposium on Thursday January 26, 2012 from 9:00am to 1:00pm. The program features Drs. Eef van der Worp, Jason Jedlicka, Christine Sindt, and Bruce Baldwin.  Visit the GSLS website for more details. Scleral lenses will also be featured in the main program.

SLS Scholarship

The SLS is supporting a research project into scleral lenses, its clinical performance and optical quality (including wavefront aberrometry), physiological response to scleral lens wear and the biochemical behaviour of the ocular surface. This research is initiated by Associate Professor Jose Manuel Gonzalez-Meijome from the Clinical & Experimental Optometry Research Lab at University of Minho in Braga (Portugal) and Eef van der Worp, affiliated with Pacific University in Oregon (USA). In upcoming newsletters, new details about the research, and results going forward, will be presented.
International Society of Contact Lens Specialists

The International Society of Contact Lens Specialists would like the invite SLS members
to their next congress, which is to be held September 7th - September 11th 2012 in Kent England.  Please visit the ISCLS website for more details.

Case Report

Muriel Schornack, OD, FAAO

A 56-year-old Caucasian male was referred to our corneal service for management of a non-healing epithelial defect in his left eye. Our corneal specialist suspected that the epithelial defect was neurotrophic in nature. We fit him with a scleral lens. Within one month of initiation of scleral lens therapy, the epithelial defect had resolved completely. To see more about this case, please see link below.
