Contacting Pastoral Care

· 410 467 3750

 · option 4

 · leave a message with contact information

When you are in need of emergency pastoral care, please call the office number and select option four.  This will take you to the on-call pager system.  You will be asked to leave a message.  When you have left a message, the system will notify the clergy person on call.

We rotate the pastoral staff on call on a bi-weekly basis.  So there is always someone on call.  We will return your call as quickly as possible.  Try to remember to provide a contact phone number, and where you are when you call.

A pastoral emergency can be a sudden hospitalization, news of someone's death, other issues of grief and loss, going into delivery, or a situation where you are seeking a caring person for crisis care.

 From the Dean

During July and August I hope that you will consider joining a reading group as part of our celebration of the Cathedral of the Incarnation.  There are many books that could be chosen, but I would like us to work with the book, Not in My Neighborhood, Not in my neighborhoodby Antero Pietila.

My hope is this book will help us reflect on the city we live in and how we are a part of Baltimore - whether you live in the city or beyond.  Let it stir us and let us allow our stirrings to arise.  Through our summer reading we will take time to articulate goals for our ministry as part of the City of Baltimore.

Over 40 people have signed up to participate in our book groups for this summer.  Over the next week each facilitator will contact his or her group and set up your schedule.  The facilitators are: Hal T. Ley Hayek, Amy Myers, Jon Shematek, Sara Shisler, and Ben Smith.  We are able to offer one morning group, one afternoon group, and three evening groups.  The actual day and time for meeting will be worked out by the facilitator with the group members.

Each group will meet four times over July and August.  If you have not signed up, you can still join a book group. Simply contact one of the facilitators.  If you have a friend who is not a member of the Cathedral of the Incarnation and they are interested, bring that person along.  The book is still available at St. Bede's. Have a great summer!

Peace, Hal

 Special Announcement

It is with mixed emotion that I am writing to let you know that Caroline Bomgardner has accepted the offer to join Bishop Sutton's staff as the new Bishops' executive secretary.  This is a great opportunity for her and we wish her well as she moves up stairs.  We will miss her greatly.  The transition is still being planned and details will be made available as we are able. Thank you Caroline for the ministry you have contributed to the Incarnation Community and God bless you as you join Bishop Sutton's staff.

 Blessings,

Dean Ley Hayek

Chapter Notes

The May Chapter meeting was held on Tuesday, May 10, 2011.  Highlights from the meeting were:
  • Cara Morris, Treasurer, reported that the audit started on May 10.
  • The operating loss is currently $54,000 and that the Finance Team will be tasked with making a plan to reduce the deficit.
  • Dean Hayek reported that the childcare program had been very successful this academic year as the caregivers were responsible, committed and excellent with the children.
  • The search for the new Director of ERICA generated 30 applicants.  The Search Committee winnowed the number to 10 and would then screen those 10 to forward two candidates for the Dean to interview.
  • The business meeting ended early for the Chapter to join a BUILD training session given by Rob English with other members of the congregation.  The training was titled "Guidelines for Individual Meetings".
The meeting ended with with Holy Eucharist.

Altar Flowers - Memorials and Thanksgivings

Flowers for the altar are given to the Glory of God, and in memory of loved ones or in thanksgiving.  Other than the Sundays in Advent and Lent, flowers can be dedicated for a suggested donation of $60.  Please sign up on the flower poster outside the Rev. Sara's office.  Many Sundays, especially during the summer, are still available.

Interested in arranging flowers for the altar?  Contact Mary Jane Hall (410-377-4218), who heads up our Flower Ministry and happy to train all new recruits.

Counting your pledges!

 --Caroline Bomgardner

Every Monday morning, a group of volunteers gathers in a conference room to sort, count, and deposit the offerings from Sunday.  Until recently, Jack Goodman headed up this team comprising Dave Durfee, Jean McHugh, Dick Springer and Richard Sunderland. Sadly, after many years of devoted service, Jack (and Margaret, his wife and unofficial member of the team) has retired with our sincere thanks.  Indeed, I would like to thank all the members of this team for their dedication to the ministry of counting, which generally goes unnoticed.

I would also like to draw your attention to a few ways you can ease the process.  Pledge contributions (and many other offerings) are tax deductible, and the counters help to keep track of your donations.  Each giving member of the Cathedral has a pledge or offering number - do you know yours?

  • If you give by offering envelopes, the number is indicated on the top right-hand corner.  Your financial statements also have your unique number listed above your name.  Even if you are new to the Cathedral, and make your donations by check, we make sure your offering is counted and assigned to you.
  • What if you forgot your envelope and quickly write a check or find some cash to put in the offering plate?  You can help the counters by putting your pledge number on the memo line, or put your cash in a blank envelope from the pew and put your number on the front.

The newest way of giving regularly to the Cathedral is to use the Electronic Funds Transfer program.  There is a brochure in the pews which explains how EFT works with a form to complete and sign.  Together with a voided check this is all you need to do (other than mail it to the office).  Or you can click here, which will take you directly to the EFT link where you can enter your information.  Those who give electronically have the option of putting the green "I give by EFT" card found in the pews into the offering plate.

The Second Quarter financial statements will be mailed July 7.  Look for your number above your name, and if you have any questions about your donations to the Cathedral, please contact the office.

Spiritual Quotes

I am attending Shalem Intitute and have pulled the following quotations from the reading list that have challenged me, intrigued me, or just booted me in a more helpful direction when needed.  Perhaps they will help keep the established paths clear for others too.   Blessings,

--Beth McNamara+

"God's people are deliberately forced into the desert - taking the harder, more onerous and hazardous route - as an exacting exercise in radical faith.  They are shoved down the difficult path so there will be no thought of turning back. They cover grueling miles of terrain so tortuous that they will never be tempted to recross it in quest of the leeks and onions they remembered in Egypt. Perhaps others can go around the desert on the simpler route toward home, but the way of God's people is always through it."

Belden Lane, The Solace of Fierce Landscapes, Oxford University Press, 1998

"The truest impulse toward work for social justice grows not out of an anxious sense of pity for others or a grandly noble desire to serve, but out of the abandonment of the self in God.  A love that works for justice is wholly uncalculating and indifferent, able to accomplish much because it seeks nothing for itself."

Belden Lane, The Solace of Fierce Landscapes, Oxford University Press, 1998

"Faith is the response to existence which says that the one who is not seen is most real, and that although contingent, we are established in being every moment by the power of God."

Luke Timothy Johnson, Scripture and Discernment,

Abingdon Press, 1996

"Because God intrudes into the comfortable space we cling to for self-definition and calls us out to a wider truth, divine revelation continues in our world.  God acts now.  And since God's activity is meaningful, the Word of God is continually spoken and requires hearing."

Luke Timothy Johnson, Scripture and Discernment, Abingdon Press, 1996

"Living in the present moment does not mean withdrawing into one's personal private moment.  God is present here and now not only in my private life but also in the lives of everyone and in the whole universe.  The present moment that we need to become in silence and solitude is the present moment of today's world.  We need the signs of our times in order to live in the here and now of our unfolding universe - which is the only place where God can be found."

Creation Care Team

Neighbor-to-Neighbor Energy Savings Program

The Cathedral of the Incarnation is joining with other congregations in Baltimore to help our members take concrete actions in their homes to be good stewards of the earth by implementing energy saving practices.  To be part of this free program, you can participate in two ways:

1.      Volunteer to be trained to conduct home energy evaluations and education as part of our Energy Saver Team.  Volunteers will form small teams and receive four hours of training from Civic Works and Chesapeake Covenant Community. These team members will then go, when invited, into their fellow congregants', family members', friends' and neighbors' homes and conduct basic energy evaluations and education. The volunteers will (a) offer appropriate energy efficiency advice and education on a customized basis, (b) demonstrate where energy efficiencies could be implemented to save money and reduce COČ emissions; and (c) recommend appropriate and affordable remedies to fix these inefficiencies.  Note:  our ability to offer the Program will depend on our ability to recruit 4 - 6 Energy Saver Team members.

2.      Invite the Cathedral's Neighbor-to-Neighbor Energy Saver team into your home for a free energy consultation.   You will have the option of having a home consultation visit and education, or have a complete home walk-through and home evaluation.

If you would like to be part of this program as an Energy Saver Team member or if you would like to sign-up for a free home energy visit, please sign-up on the bulletin board.  If you have any questions, please contact Paul Beares at spbeares@verizon.net or call 410-666-3787.

One Straw Farm - CSA Program

 One Straw Farm / CSA

Again this year, many Cathedral and neighborhood families are participating in our CSA program which provides fresh, locally grown organic produce throughout the six month growing season and supports our local farmers.  Each year One Straw Farm donates a full share for each 10 shares our CSA member's purchase.  We are donating these shares to the community outreach programs of the 40 West Assistance Center in west Baltimore.

Watch the weekly email and bulletin for wonderful recipes to help you and your family enjoy the many wonderful vegetables available through our local farmers.

Sandtown - Habitat for Humanity

1720 Lorman Dedication

1720 Lorman Street - one of the two houses worked on by Cathedral volunteers - was dedicated on June 24, 2011. It was a wonderful welcome-home celebration for homeowner Shamire Hill and her four-year old son. Her extended family was there to support her, and as it was the final day in the Summer Building Week, volunteers, other Habitat homeowners and the wider Sandtown community came out to join in the music, prayer and joyous ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Rev. Ben Smith and Cathedral member Mara MurdocMara Ben and Shamireh presented Shamire with a beautifully illustrated Bible for children, Cathedral centennial T-Shirts and a gift card to Target to kick off furnishing her new home. Blessing Ogamba along with Don and Sarah Stevens-Rayburn were also there representing our community. If you haven't been to a house dedication or to Sandtown to experience the spirit there, come on down! Talk to Sarah Stevens-Rayburn or Chapter member/Outreach Team member Meg Craun for the latest goings-on.

Building Week lHabitat lunch makingunches - Sandtown Habitat for Humanity

THANK YOU to the almost 40 members of our Cathedral community who shopped, made and served lunches to 150+ volunteers on June 20 for Sandtown Habitat!

Check out the pictures on the Outreach bulletin board in the hallway!

WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH OUR HABITAT HOUSES?

--Sarah Stevens-Rayburn

Our Habitat volunteers managed to finish one of our two houses in time for a glorious dedication the last day of Habitat's annual Summer Building week. But our work is not yet done! We still have a lot of finish work (window sills, base molding, kitchen cabinet installation, and so on) in the house across Lorman St. from the dedicated one. To volunteer, just sign the sheet on the Outreach Board or send an email. Please continue to keep our Episcopal coalition volunteers and the Sandtown neighborhood in your prayers and remember that your financial contributions make this ministry possible. Pew envelopes labeled for Habitat are available for your convenience.

All God's Children Camp

--Doris & Ken McElroy

Since its beginning in August, 1995, the Cathedral of the Incarnation has supported All God's Children a five day long sleep-away camp for 7-12 year olds held at The Bishop Claggett Center - with money, staff and children from our congregation.  As the name suggests, this is an opportunity for boys and girls from different backgrounds and ethnicities to play, learn new skills, and make new friends.  It also allows junior staff to develop as leaders.

This year's camp begins on Sunday, August 7, and ends Friday morning, August 12.  The cost is $325; scholarship money is available.  Application forms are available from Outreach Coordinator Amy Myers or in the lobby.  Questions?  Ask Dorris or Ken McElroy at 410-366-5598.

Supply List

Under the art direction of Kerry Gardner Towner, over 60 children will create a variety of projects.  Kerry would appreciate  donations of the following:

Small/ medium white tshirts,

Rit dyes,

Felt sheets and pre-cut felt shapes

Fabric glue
Fabric paints, pens, markers.
Lanyard supplies: gimp and key rings
Beads, buttons, sequins

Donations can be brought to the Cathedral until next Sunday July 17 - THANK YOU!!

Waverly Elementary/Middle School

Our Cathedral community started off this school year hosting a welcome back to school reception for Waverly teachers and staff inWaverly Thanks the Peabody Room and ended it with delivery 477 new books to each child in the elementary and middle schools. In between we collected school supplies, supported parents and volunteers, and worked together to secure state funding for City Schools. It's been a tremendous year and we look forward to working together again next year. Funding for all school systems across the country are tightening and parents and community partners are being asked to do more; the good news about this is that schools with strong community ties are healthier. Look for ways that you can play a part in supporting our neighborhood school in the fall!

Buy a Bag, Reunite a Family

--Margo Landon

On every second and fourth Sunday, stop by the marble lobby and buy delicious fair-trade organically-grown coffees and teas.  Your purchase will support three ministries here at home and around the world.

1 - Pura Vida is a Seattle roaster that invests all profits into its Create Good Foundation, supporting clean water and economic infrastructure projects in coffee growing regions in Latin America and Africa.bishop blend

2 - Fifteen percent of our wholesale purchase of product is donated by Pura Vida to Episcopal Relief and Development. ERD is working in more than forty countries to support long-term initiatives to address hunger, disease, support economic development and provide disaster response.

3 - Our profit of $1.40 - $2.90 per item is allocated to the Marian Lyle Family Reunification Loan Fund of ERICA. This unique and special fund allows for interest-free loans to our refugee and asylee clients to bring together family, often after long and painful separations.

For your out-of-town friends and family who can't make it in person, online orders can be made through the Bishop's Blend link on the Cathedral website. We'll receive a 15% rebate for ERICA for every purchase made through the link!

Baltimore Education Coalition Update

Some 50 people from across the city attended the Baltimore Education Coalition (BEC) retreat in June. We reflected on our success this past year, and made strategic decisions about our advocacy focus for the fall and beyond. Outreach Coordinator Amy Myers represented the Cathedral Advocates for Public Education (CAPE). There will be opportunities to hear about this advocacy work and, most importantly, for your input into what our Cathedral community's priorities are. Sign up for email alerts, to contact legislators, to attend meetings of the Baltimore Education Coalition, or  for other opportunities as they arise by contacting Amy Myers at the office. For more information on BEC, visit their website.

Baltimore is a leader in having a strong, broad based organized coalition of education advocates; one goal for 2011/2012 is to connect with education advocates in the counties and throughout the state to share our expertise in building such an effective coalition. All of Maryland's children deserve fair and equitable state funding for education. Poverty doesn't end at the county line. As the Cathedral in the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland which stretches from the city to Garrett and Alleghany Counties in the west, we can use our connections to Episcopal churches throughout the state to support the effort of building strong local coalitions of education advocates.

Food Pantry - special requests

Food Collection for the Church of the Guardian Angel, Remington Food Pantry - Our comTuna cansmunity continues to collect nonperishable food for our neighbors in Remington. Especially needed now are: peanut butter, canned fruit of any kind, canned vegetables of any kind, and tuna fish. Please choose regular sized items (as opposed to jumbo sizes); these are easier for families to use and easier for the Food Pantry volunteers to distribute. Collection bins are located in the hallway across from Rev. Sara's office. Questions? See Outreach Coordinator Amy Myers.

Toiletries

--Adele Wakefield

 Toiletries

We continue to collect toiletries (both full and trial sizes), including toothpaste & brushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, baby wipes, diapers, etc.  These are given to families and individuals - in transitional housing, hospice care, and at ERICA workshops.  Donations should be placed in the box under the credenza, outside the workroom.

Centennial Anthem Review

The following letter was sent to Ken Brown from Theodore Morrison, the composer of the Centennial Anthem sung at the 100th Pentecost Service:

Dear Ken,

I just listened to the anthem four times and am delighted with the premiere. It is indeed lovely, beautiful and moving.

Both soloists did splendidly.  The choir did very well with the difficult tuning issues, and I didn't mind the mic placement favoring ST. The mic favored the voices over the organ in general, and I wish there were more organ volume on the recording. I suspect it balanced very well in the church, though, where it really counts. You played wonderfully throughout!

Warm thanks for this terrific beginning for a piece that I hope will begin to make the rounds. I will submit it to earthsongs for publication now that there is written and recorded data. Please once more send me a pdf file of the latest version of the score along with the link to the recording so I can forward both in the same email to the president of earthsongs.

Gratefully yours, and all the best for a good summer!

Sincerely,

Theo

From Bishop Burnett

Join me for a Lenten Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, March 22-April 4, 2012

The "Holy Land," as it is popularly known, is home to three great Abrahamic faiths-Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Truly this is the "land of the Holy One," and as such draws countless pilgrims year in and year out.  This trip is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the great traditions that have their roots here, and to become more aware of the complex social and political forces that have long been the seedbed of division and conflict. But most important, this is a powerful way to gain a deeper understanding of your own Christian faith and practice.
