"Thus, I am learning that compassionate service rooted in mercy, for me, looks like loving attentiveness to the person in front of me. Sometimes, it is as simple as asking a student to tell you about his father, and watching him come to life ..." read more

Institute Justice Team

The Sisters of Mercy are engaged in a variety of activities to address human trafficking, which we highlight during this month of Human Trafficking Awareness Day. You can join in this work by printing out a letter that you can leave at the front desk at any hotel you visit to educate management about this critical issue, and by sending a letter to your legislators urging them to reauthorize federal human trafficking legislation. You also can read about how Sisters of Mercy in the Midwest are joining others in educating hotels around the Indianapolis area about human trafficking before the Super Bowl takes place there on February 5, since major sporting events often attract increased trafficking activity. Read more here about how Mercy is engaged in the issue of human trafficking. |

Greetings!
This month's A Moment With MVC features reflections from the O'Hara sisters, who embody the mission of MVC. We also spotlight one of our sites in Savannah, GA, St. Joseph's/Candler SOURCE. We value our long-standing relationship with this site that offers such valuable services to the Savannah community. Please pray for us as we enter into our application season and for those who may be discerning a year of service with us. Lastly, we offer ways to connect with the Sisters of Mercy Institute Justice Team. |

O'Hara Sisters Reflect
on Service Experience
 | | (L to R) Colleen '11 and Meghan O'Hara '07 |
Growing up, I was blessed with the opportunity to be surrounded by a loving family that taught me the value of service through real-life examples. My parents were always going the extra mile for others, and urging my sisters and I to do the same. I would have to say the example set by my family prompted me to further embrace serving others when I left home for college.
Wishing to keep service as a priority in my life, I found myself following in all three of my sisters' footsteps and attending Mercyhurst College. As a student at Mercyhurst, I was offered multiple opportunities to live out the Mercy Mission through participating in various service clubs and organizations. My sister joined Mercy Volunteer Corps when I was a freshman in college, and it opened my eyes to an incredibly exciting service experience. I was able to visit her in Sacramento and work with her at Loaves and Fishes. I came to love the environment and overall purpose of the organization. Both my family experiences and my four years at Mercyhurst greatly influenced my decision to join Mercy Volunteer Corps post graduation.
This year I am living in Savannah, Georgia and serving at St. Mary's Community Center. Each and every day brings new situations through the front door at work, and I love ever second of it! The services offered at St. Mary's range from a pre-school and GED program, to a free eyeglass clinic and free income tax preparation, to monthly senior citizen grocery deliveries and neighborhood access to the food pantry. This MVC experience has truly taught me the importance of looking at situations from different perspectives. In the past six months, I have been granted with countless experiences that have taught me incredible life lessons from both the clients which I serve and the community which I live in. Most importantly, this experience has reemphasized my desire to serve others whether it's through sharing a smile & a hug, lending a listening ear, or just being present and available to help to others each and every day.
-Colleen O'Hara, '11
I have been blessed to have a family with such generous and open hearts. My mom has always served as an example for what real-life service looks like - keeping an eye out for anyone in need and always providing a warm and delicious meal and cup of tea to any visitor. This loving framework combined with my education at Mercyhurst College (in Erie, PA) has greatly influenced my desire to serve.
During my four years at Mercyhurst, my eyes were opened to the great need for social change. I spent much time working with inner city at risk children who brightened my days with laughter and heart-warming stories. Yet at the same time, my heart would break to know that many of them would never escape the cycle of poverty they were born into. I was eagerly looking forward to making a "real change" and dedicating a year of my life to serving in the Mercy Volunteer Corps, although a whole different population and location, as I moved across the country to work with the homeless at Loaves & Fishes ('07- '08) in Sacramento, California. My MVC year was so deep and rich that I decided to move back to Sacramento after my service year and keep the connections alive. I am currently serving as a MVC support person and visit my homeless friends at Loaves & Fishes as possible. I was so excited as Colleen also decided to serve with MVC and am looking forward to visiting her in Savannah, GA to share in her MVC experiences.

Mercy Volunteer Corps and St Joseph's/ Candler SOURCE;
An Inspired Partnership
|
| |
Katie Gwynn, '11 and SOURCE client |
Jenny Brown, St. Joseph's/Candler SOURCE reflects on St. Joseph's partnership with MVC: It began almost 10 years ago now; St Joseph's/ Candler Health System in Savannah partnered with Mercy Volunteer Corps and it's been a great ride.
The St. Joseph's/Candler SOURCE (Service Options Using Resources in Community Environments) program is designed to help people who are older or who have disabilities remain in the community instead of living in nursing homes. Through case management, support services and primary medical care we help people with chronic medical conditions that need help with daily activities. Through our Community Connections project, Mercy Volunteer Corps gives SOURCE an opportunity to go one step further in helping people. Many times the only people SOURCE members get to see during the day are those paid to care for them because they aren't able to get out and be part of a church community or neighborhood. Through the Community Connections project, our Mercy Volunteers help introduce or re-introduce our members to their community. These relationships are vital to our members in helping them feel a sense of connection again. The circles of support that are created empower SOURCE members to forge new and lasting friendships and, in turn, help the communities see them as valued citizens.
This year we are delighted to have Katie Gwynn serving as our Mercy Volunteer. She comes to us having just completed her Bachelor's in Social Work degree and is delightful. She is funny and energetic and has social work insights that are invaluable to helping our clients. She has a small caseload of about 15 people that she's helping through the Connections project. She serves as their advocate and, with guidance and direction from Jenny Brown, the site supervisor, helps her people articulate and work toward goals related to increased social connection and community participation. She does home visits several times a week. These visits are designed to engage SOURCE members in community experiences to overcome barriers that may accompany their physical or cognitive impairments.
We hope that through the Connections project our SOURCE members will feel that they are part of something; family, church, community. That they have something to offer; friendship, love and laughter. That they are valued, and through the Connections project they find support and love.
Mario is one of the SOURCE members Katie is working with this year. He is the official SJCHS SOURCE "tour guide" at the office. He helps visitors find where they need to go, runs messages to co workers, and is an all around good guy. He has a sense of humor that is contagious. Oh, and he sings with a lot of heart. Mario will charm anyone who walks by with a rousing rendition of "Victory is Mine."
