Pre-Service Thoughts

Katie Acosta

Mercy Center

New York, NY

"Villanova places a strong emphasis on service and social justice, and through campus ministry service programs and my classes I was able not only to see the injustice and poverty that existed both at home and abroad, but also realize that I had an obligation to serve the poor."

Aarika Zarnick

Mercy Medical Center

Baltimore, MD

"I am looking forward to this year of giving and growing with others in hopes of, in return, receiving a better understanding of where I am meant to go with my life."

Amy Keller

Matrix Theatre Company

Detroit, MI

"After graduating from Mercy High School, Omaha, it was evident that service was a major focus in the Mercy community, and I am so blessed that I was able to learn how important it is from such a wonderful group of people."

Liz Bennett

Mercy Center

New York, NY

"Mercy Volunteer Corps' mission of service, community, simplicity, and spirituality is a perfect reflection of the principles I would like to focus on most in life."

Colleen O'Hara

St. Mary's Community Center

Savannah, GA

"Mercyhurst took pride in its Mercy heritage and tried daily to live out its Mercy mission and core values. From freshman year on I was granted with experiences both inside and outside the classroom which taught me the true importance of the college's core values: being socially merciful, globally responsible, compassionately hospitable, intellectually creative, reflectively aware, and an ambassador of service. After attending Mercyhurst I knew that I wanted to continue living my life while serving others, and MVC's core values and mission statement seemed to fall directly into line with the path I wish to continue living."

Mercy Volunteer Corps' Mission Statement

In partnership with the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, lay women and men of Mercy Volunteer Corps (MVC), enter into relationship with people who are economically poor and marginalized. In a spirit of mutuality, volunteers cultivate mercy and justice in the world by embracing compassionate service, social justice, spirituality and a simple lifestyle in community.
