In the Spotlight

Mary Ellen Gianino'08
MVC Alum
Mercy Center Bronx
New York, New York
"Without Mercy Volunteer Corps, I would not only be where I am, but I would not be who I am today. The Mercy Volunteer Corps staff was such an amazing support throughout this whole process. From the moment orientation started, I knew that I was about to embark on a life giving and life changing experience with a community that would forever be a part of my story."
Taking a Leap of Faith
Since I was a little girl I knew that it was my call to serve others. For years I was set on going to a third world country and doing my little part to help those who were less fortunate than I. It was not until my senior year in college that my feelings had changed. I had the privilege of spending my spring break at a place called Mercy Center located in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx. There I, along with seven other students from my college, put on a Spring Camp for over sixty underserved youth in the poorest congressional district in the nation. While at Mercy Center I learned about Mercy Volunteer Corps and was attracted to the program and its mission, as well as the fact that Mercy Center was one of their sites of service. As I thought more about this opportunity, it was my dad who said, "Mary Ellen, you don't have to go very far to find people in need." I knew that he was right, and although I had a feeling he also wanted to keep me close by, I thought that this must be a sign... Little did I know that Mercy Center would be my 'home away from home' for the next four years. I started off as a full time volunteer with Mercy Volunteer Corps.
As my volunteer year at Mercy Center was coming to an end, I had mixed emotions. On one hand I knew from the start that it was only for one year, but I also knew that the work that I had started was not, in my mind, complete. When my supervisor/Co-Director of Mercy Center approached me with a job proposal it did not take any 'arm twisting' to accept. I knew that my family and friends would be supportive and possibly saddened at the same time, but I knew that it was the right decision for me. That summer I would be first at Mercy Center to be given the title of Youth Programs Coordinator. Before me there was a lot of inconsistency. The youth programs were always run by the new full-time volunteers and a couple of staff members, and by the end of the year the children knew it was nearing time to say good-bye yet again. In an area where instability is a common thread, where teachers come and go, the children hop from school to school, and the household situations are sometimes in disarray, this position brought stability to both the program and the children alike. In short, I was honored to be given this opportunity.

Greetings!
Mercy Center is celebrating its twentieth anniversary and for at least fifteen of those years Mercy Volunteers have been a part of their staff. Several Mercy Volunteers have stayed on in full-time staff positions and many have been deeply affected by the relationships developed there. We are grateful to Mercy Center for all of the support extended to Mercy Volunteers and Mercy Volunteer Corps. |

Children at Mercy Center |
Mercy Center is a center for women and their families in the South Bronx that helps struggling individuals improve their lives. We are a results-oriented community resource that provides comprehensive services to women, children and their families in the poorest US Congressional District. We help our participants to transform their lives by establishing long-term connections and teaching life skills that have every day applications. We offer programs in five areas: Family Alternatives to Violence, Job Training, ESL (English as a Second Language), Personal Development and Children's Programs.
The Mercy Volunteers have meant so much to us. My words don't begin to convey the depth and breadth of their power and presence among us. Mercy Volunteers have worked with our youth in After School Programs, Winter, Spring and Summer Camps, Chorus, Dance, and more. Mercy Volunteers have worked with our women in teaching computer classes in our job training program, citizenship classes and parenting classes. Mercy Volunteers have entered fully into our community and shared their enthusiasm, skill, talent and merciful hearts with our staff and participants. Most of our Mercy Volunteers arrive shortly after graduating college and gain new skills and confidence in their first full time job. Many offer a special talent, and offer wellness programs, dance classes, and skill in helping us all grow in our awareness of and care for the earth. Our Mercy Volunteers enliven our mission, strengthen our ability to reach out and provide comprehensive, high quality service to our participants and enter into the liberating and transformative power of community.
The gift of Mercy Volunteers is a gift given and received. We are grateful for the circle of mercy where each person gives and receives in a dynamic interchange of energy that leaves a lasting mark on the lives of each person involved: participants, volunteers, staff and all who cross our path.

Staff member and client of Catholic Migration Office

The mission of the Catholic Migration Office is to empower underserved immigrant communities regardless of religion or ethnicity and to provide comprehensive advocacy and legal services to advance equality and social justice in a changing and diverse population. Catholic Migration Office engages in the provision of direct legal services to immigrants in need. Since its inception, CMO has provided a broad range of immigration legal services, including preparation of applications for political asylum, family-based immigration, and deportation defense. More recently, CMO began providing housing and labor-related legal services, and has engaged in community organizing in the communities around its Queens location. Next year our Mercy Volunteer will be an immigration specialist, interviewing potential clients and preparing immigration-related applications under the supervision of an attorney. Paul Shonk, Esq., a managing attorney of the Catholic Migration Office, said they were excited to have a Mercy Volunteers who, "was ready to respond to the Gospel's call to welcome the stranger, to continue our services to immigrants as well as to help expand those services in the face of growing need." We are excited about our new site and our new partnership!
