"I like coming to your dentistry because it is absolutely amazing. The staff is so friendly, you work so hard to make my smile shine, and if I ever forget to brush my teeth, I can always use the toothbrushes that you provide. I'd give your dentistry a five-star rating! Unlike other dentists, Doctor Bruce, you don't poke, pull, or hurt my teeth. At first, when I was getting braces, I thought they'd hurt a lot. But I was wrong. The process of putting on the braces didn't hurt at all. Doctor Bruce, thank you for giving me advice on different ways on how to brush my teeth, so there is no plague left behind on them.
The thing that keeps me looking forward to my next visit at Harris Orthodontist is the friendly staff that you have. They are very kind and become very cautious and careful when they are working with my teeth. They ask me questions like, "Are you still brushing at night," or, "Do you floss daily," because they want to make sure that I'm doing my part in keeping my teeth clean. A great facility at your dentistry is the brushing area. I can always brush my teeth before the doctor comes so that I'll have clean teeth when the doctor checks them. A convenient thing about your dentistry is the timing. Since it opens so early, I can book my appointment early, and that way I won't have to miss school! My smile is really beginning to shine!"

What is the purpose of wisdom teeth?
It's thought that the Stone Age diet often consisted of coarse, rough foods that required more chewing power. As a result, the jawbones of our ancestors were larger and accommodated 32 teeth with ease. In addition, in the wild, teeth had a tendency to fall prey to decay or get knocked out. If someone lost a tooth, the wisdom teeth would usually push the rest forward to fill in the gap. However, evolution continued and the human diet changed to include softer, more processed foods that were less challenging to our pearly whites and jaws. Losing teeth became less of an issue, and wisdom teeth served less and less of a purpose. Today, most of us don't have the need or room for these extra molars. Wisdom tooth extraction is a common procedure, and usually requires just a few hours in the oral surgeon's office, followed by a few days of chipmunk-cheeked discomfort.

Why is flossing so important? |

Some of the food we eat is essential for health and well-being and some is just junk that we could live without. Whether your diet consists of completely healthy foods or whether you eat lots of sugary snacks, everything you eat can be unhealthy for your teeth. The bacteria that is normally present in your mouth converts the sugars and starches in your food into acids. Together, the bacteria and acids mix with food particles to form plaque, a sticky film that coats your teeth. If left in your moth, plaque attacks your tooth enamel and dissolves it, creating a hole, called a cavity, in the hard outer casing of the tooth. Plaque hardens into tartar, which only a dental cleaning by a professional can remove. Plaque and tartar irritates your gums and, if left unchecked, causes gingivitis, and inflammation of the gums, which in turn can lead to periodontal disease and tooth loss. Plaque can also be a source of bad breath. So now you see why your orthodontist, dentist and other dental professionals place such an emphasis on good oral hygiene! As a part of your daily routine, you should floss at least once a day, especially after eating foods that easily stick between the teeth, such as sticky or gummy candies, corn on the cob, popcorn, or potato chips. (Floss first to loosen and dislodge plaque and food then brush to sweep particles away.)
