Economic Report - August 2011
Economic Report

The June 2011 Employment Report for counties in Oklahoma was recently released, it showed a spike in the unemployment rate for Pontotoc County. Local data is not seasonally adjusted, so there usually are spikes in June and January each year in the local rates. The state and national rates are adjusted seasonally, so their rates don't spike.

The unemployment rate for Pontotoc County increased from 4.2% in May to 4.9% in June and the labor force dropped below 20,000 to 19,869. Oklahoma experienced a 7,000 drop in the labor force while unemployment remained at 5.3%. The national unemployment rate increased to 9.2% in June and the labor force declined by more than 270,000 workers.

Fiscal Year 10-11 sales tax information has been compiled and indicates that sales tax receipts increased by 1.1% ($152,654) over the previous fiscal year. This equates to a $3.8 million increase in retail sales. Wholesale trade, food stores, and eating establishments were the three sectors with the most growth. For the first time in three years, building material sales experienced an increase.
