FROM ADVISORY BOARD PRESIDENT
Recap of the summer of 2012

Summer is almost over and although the heat wasn't as brutal as the previous year, if you are homeless, it was a very, very hot summer!  During hot days we make sure our clients have plenty of water to drink while at ODB, but also to take with them.  We are very grateful for the amazing response we received from our volunteers, businesses and the community in general to our requests for bottled water.  We estimate that over 25 cases of water are distributed each week during the hot summer months.  This is only possible because of the generosity of the employees and management of the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Sanger, as well as other businesses in Denton and, of course, our loyal volunteers and contributors.

Another critical need this summer is for mosquito repellent, especially because of the high number of West Nile virus cases in Denton County.  We have distributed approximately 300 bottles of mosquito repellent this summer and could have distributed much more if we had them.

Summer also meant that the community gardens around Denton were busy planting and harvesting and ODB was the grateful recipient of an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits. We were able to serve many more fresh vegetables than ever before!  Any surplus was given to clients to take home through our very popular "free farmers' market" program.  This program allows our clients to take home surplus fresh fruits, vegetables, package goods, bakery goods, etc. that were donated by Wal-Mart through the Feeding America program, various merchants around town, individuals and community gardens.  Whatever is not used in the kitchen is given to our clients!

Here are some facts that you may not know:
  • We are currently serving an average of 200 meals per day. Since we opened in June 2000, we have served 478,687 meals to those in need. We will serve our 500,000 meal within a few months.
  • At the present time, Our Daily Bread has 1,129 clients enrolled in HMIS and we are currently serving 974, of which 491 are homeless.
  • Our volunteers provide more than 35,000 hours of service per year.
  • We provide many other need-based services to our clients.
None of this would be possible without your continued support and we are very thankful to you.  Your generous contribution during the Harvest for the Hungry campaign will allow us to continue our important mission.  So please help us feed the homeless and needy.

Suely Lohr

Ed note: Suely Lohr is currently serving her second, consecutive, one-year term as President of the Advisory Board of Our Daily Bread.

WHAT IS HMIS?
The Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) is an electronic database with information on the characteristics and service needs of homeless people in the U.S.
The program was developed in the 1990s in response to a mandate by Congress requiring states to collect data in order to receive funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help address homelessness.

ODB is participating in this program to enable the sharing of available services between other help agencies, gathering important data and information from HUD and most importantly to provide a picture identification card for our .clients

GIRL SCOUTS VOLUNTEER

Nine Girl Scout members of Troop 3786, from Corinth, joined the Wal-Mart Distribution Center crew helping with the assembly of Snack Packs, in August. The girls, working at the final assembly station, were happy to lend a hand for the cause. When asked why they were there, replies of some of the girls were:
"To help people who don't have food." - Sofia, age 9.
"Going to help people in need." - Kiwi, age 7.
"Helping them get food." --Violet, age 8.
"Giving some to people who can't afford to buy food." -- Haley, age 7.

Thank you, Troop 3786, for your wonderful help.

HELP OUR DAILY BREAD WHILE YOU'RE AWAY
If you are traveling and staying in a hotel, you can help Our Daily Bread. Most hotels give complimentary packets of soap, shampoos, lotions and other notions to room guests. If you don't always use them all, and if you squirrel them away on a daily basis so that your room supply is replenished, depending on the length of your trip, you can amass a goodly collection to bring back for distribution to our clients. It's surprising how much they are appreciated.
Just drop them off with the ODB Program Coordinators and we guarantee they'll be put to good use. Thanks, and have a good trip.
