Yo!
Now that White Collar is back on air, my late night TV watching has increased considerably. And I keep coming across ads where my over-riding takeaway is 'What were they thinking?!" Oh, I can see the brief that produced these ads - probably a word cloud would show - intriguing+story-like+also work in digital medium+sex appeal. While they certainly succeed in getting my attention, the product messaging seems to be clouded out by the dollops of intrigue and sex appeal.
So in this land of wannabes, we decided we'd like to reward those few who actually get the digital medium. And with this in mind, we've launched the Digeratti Awards - if you, your firm or client has done something cool and effective that includes the digital medium fill up this form http://paulwriter.com/futuristcmo2012/index.php?option=com_forms&view=form and you could be recognized at this year's Futurist CMO Conclave, Delhi. The event is really hotting up with confirmations from Religare, Ramco Systems, TCS, Suzlon, IBM, Tata Motors and others coming in this week.
If you're looking for ways to strengthen your digital presence, then do download a copy of the Red Book of Social Media - a compilation of the best writing on this topic from around the world. (We have hard copies of this book for sale too - email me if you'd like to buy - they are great for distributing to your clients and team members.)
My small campaign to be president of India received national coverage thanks to the kind team at Corporate Dossier - take a look at this very interesting piece on why social media is a double-edged sword for CEOs
I should also mention that in view of the rains in Mumbai we decided to postpone our CMO Breakfast by a few weeks. We'll come back to you with more details when we finalize.
Paul Writer is supporting the theatre production "Charlie & The Chocolate Factory" presented by the kids of Ashwini Charitable Trust and directed by two American teenagers, Emily King and Brooke Alexander. Do buy tickets and enjoy an amazing show - and know that your money goes to a good cause. What I really love about this project is that it helps underprivileged not just get an education but helps their communication skills, confidence levels and digital literacy. Donor passes are priced at Rs 1000 each for the show on Friday, July 20th evening, at Cisco Campus, ORR, Sarjapur Bangalore. More info at www.race2educate.org or email me.

ET - Corporate Dossier: Why CEOs find social media to be a double-edged sword
|
by Nikhil Menon -ET Bureau

...the single most important thing about social networks-they are a great leveler. They also blur the line between what was considered one's professional and personal space.
As the battle to decide India's next president rages on, the managing director of Paul Writer jokingly urges people to consider her for the position. When asked about her ambition to occupy Rashtrapati Bhavan, she chuckles, "I am a woman, so I am in a political minority.
"Besides, I am a Tamilian, married to a Bengali, so I should be acceptable to both Jayalalithaa and Mamta di. Why not?" Her irrefutable logic is met with much hilarity and even endorsement by the people who follow her. But looking beyond her easy candour, what's interesting is how the managing director of Paul Writer effortlessly wields social media across half-a-dozen platforms. For Paul, who is a regular on content sharing and networking sites like Slideshare, Youtube, Facebook and Flickr, online networking sites are food and drink. The author of a book on frugal marketing and former Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of Wipro was one of LinkedIn's first users in India in the early 2000s. In fact, Krishnan of LinkedIn India says that Jessie Paul is a case study, in the way she created a network of CMOs in her earlier avatar to trade best practices. Read the article here... |

Achieving Sustainable Competitive Product Differentiation
|
Chris Luxford
| |
t's an incredibly competitive world and you need to keep your product visible with smart, sustainable tactics. How do you stay relevant and differentiate your product from the hundreds of others currently in the market?
Here are a couple of well-worn tactics that companies have been using for years:
Competitive pricing strategies: Why this works:Your consumer is constantly looking for a better product at a lower price. Who would say 'no' to buying a tablet PC for $750, marked down from $800? Certainly not me. Product companies are at war with each other daily to see who is priced better, and with more features.
Why this doesn't work: Pricing is a dynamic factor that needs to be changed on a daily basis to keep up with the competition. Every day there is a new player in the field, with better features at a lower price. Try to undercut your competitors on a daily basis, and you might just end up losing out on a significant amount of earnings. Read more... |

How to get ROI from your Outsourced Partners
|
by Jessie Paul
| |
Get into any marketing gathering and the most common topic of conversation will be how the agency is just not working out. Assuming that you are not working with a dud one, possibly some of the problems are caused by, ahem, you!
I've seen all sides - I spent three years in account management in Ogilvy Advertising and then for 12 years managed a large outsourced ecosystem of agencies, consultants and freelancers, and now for the past two years I've run an advisory firm, which among other things also guides clients on their marketing supply chain or vendor eco-system.
During these years, I have of course made my fair share of disastrous choices (and how to avoid those is a whole different topic) but I've also established some very productive long term relationships and pulled off some great work with them. So here are my thoughts on how you as a client can actually benefit more from your outsourced partners.
Here are some tips...

How Apple, Dominos, Delta Airlines Rise Despite Slumpy Economy
|
by Patrick Hanlon - Thinktopia
| |
This week Apple, in another of the unexpected moves that has made this company famous, bumped up salaries for employees in their retail stores as much as 25 percent. The raises are based on worker performance reviews held earlier this year, and come as no surprise to anyone who has stepped into any of the over 350 Apple stores around the world.
It is to those 36,000 employees' credit that the Apple experience is uniformly high no matter if you step into a store in Munich or Manhattan.
Like Apple products, Apple staff are people friendly. They actually know (and care about) what they're talking about-or they'll find someone who does. All of which contributes to making Apple's face-to-face time a largely positive experience, and makes their stores the highest-performing retail spaces in the world.
Dominos, the global pizza chain based in Ann Arbor, has also been making changes since its 2008 brand relaunch. Serving a wildly divergent audience spanning 16 countries and a consumer market aged from 19 to 65, the company realized several years ago that while they were the experts in delivery, their product perception was low, service was low and, since they delivered the pizza to your door, a retail experience was nonexistent.
Time for a change.

I was in my previous job for 8 years. Whenever someone asked me how long I have been in the organization, I found it difficult to answer that question. The reason being, I had landed up in the last organization through two acquisitions in as many years. I was part of a 200 people setup, that was acquired by a 5000 people company, which was in turn acquired by a 100,000 people organisation! Just saying eight years didn't quite communicate the progressive journey I had been through my 8 years.
Most people I meet with are always intrigued by this story, as few have been through any such involuntary change. And rarely two changes in a short span. Many also wondered how I managed not only to survive such a dramatic change, but had actually managed to rise to the top in each of those organisations. I had not really thought about it, till a colleague of mine thought it would be interesting to talk about this as part of the M&A integration strategy framework he used. After all it is the many personal stories that make the larger story.
