Warning to Consumers in Illinois and Michigan: PQIA recently purchased samples of Royal 10W40 and Royal Star 5W30 in Illinois and Michigan. Test results show these oils can cause damage to car engines.

In addition to warning consumers about the dangers of these oils to car engines, PQIA advises retailers to be aware of the issues PQIA found with these brands and we ask consumers and others to let us know the store names and locations where you find these brands sold, and/or the distributors that handle them. A National Survey of Lubricant Industry Stakeholders 2012 - DIFM Labeling

The Petroleum Quality Institute of America conducted a survey completed by 161 industry participants, including major oil companies, independent lubricant manufacturers, lubricant additive suppliers and others in September 2012.

An interesting and very telling takeaway from the survey is that 90% of those in our industry responding to the survey would not have their car serviced with engine oil without knowing the brand, viscosity grade and API Service Classification of the product used. They say consumers have a right to this information to protect them from fraud and product misrepresentation. In addition, such information is critical to assuring their warranties remain intact.

Making a Difference!

In January 2011, PQIA issued a Consumer Alert on samples of Bullseye Engine oil it purchased at a convenience store operating under the Shell canopy in Austintown, Ohio. In addition to other issues, the product tested had a viscosity 75% below where it should be for a 5W-30. PQIA contacted Shell about this issue. See Shell's response.

Hoping Shell may have had some influence with the operator to discourage sales of harmful engine oils, PQIA revisited this store in July 2011. To our disappointment
BEFORE
, rather than removing the harmful Bullseye from the shelves, this convenience store was not only still selling Bullseye, but they added another brand (Star Petroleum High Mileage Formula) that PQIA had also issued a Consumer Alert on.

But now for the good news
.

PQIA revisited the same store in August 2012, and both the Bullseye and Star Petroleum brands were off the shelf. They were replaced by Pennzoil and a private label brand (Certified Performance Engineered). Both of these products checked out fine in PQIA's previous testing
AFTER
.

PQIA reached out to Shell two months ago to see if they had any influence on making this change happen. We are still waiting for a response.

SO... A PAT ON THE BACK TO THE OWNER OF THE C-STORE IN AUSTINTOWN, OHIO FLYING THE SHELL COLORS FOR TAKING BAD OILS OFF THE SHELF. PQIA will stop by again to pick up some Beef Jerky and look around in the future.
We Need Your Support

The Petroleum Quality Institute of America's mission is to serve the consumer of lubricants by testing and reporting on the quality and integrity of lubricants in the marketplace. It is expected that this improved visibility of quality will lead to wider conformance by lubricant manufacturers to specification and performance claims.

But we
can't do it alone.

In order to sustain or efforts and impact - we need your support!
