BCIU & School District Partnerships
Focus on Pennsbury
As part of its District Support Team work, the Bucks County Intermediate Unit will conduct an Information Systems Quality Review in the Pennsbury School District from February 8-10, 2012.  This review will provide the Pennsbury School District with a comprehensive analysis of strengths, needs, and recommendations relating to all school district information systems, including student, special education, human resources,financial, employee time and attendance, bus and transportation, and food service.  To learn more about a Systems Quality Review, please read on.....

Grant Corner                         Teacher Grant Opportunities                                                     
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is accepting applications for environmental education grants to be released in 2012.  Schools can apply for a maximum of $7,500 to create or develop projects to support a variety of environmental topics including: watershed management, water conservation, acid mine drainage, alternative energy, air quality, brownfields redevelopment and Chesapeake Bay restoration. Applications are available online at www.dep.state.pa.us by clicking on Environmental Education, then Grants, or by calling the Environmental Education and Information Center at 717-772-1828. The deadline to apply is Dec. 16.
 
The ING Unsung Heroes Program invites K-12 Educators to Apply for 2012 Class Project Awards.  Each year, 100 educators are selected to receive $2,000 for their innovative teaching methods, creative educational projects, and ability to positively influence the children they teach.  Deadline is April 30, 2012.  Learn more by visiting http://ing.us/about-ing/citizenship/childrens-education/ing-unsung-heroes.

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a Humane Education Mini-Grant of $1,000 to fund innovative humane education opportunities in K-12 classrooms.  The purpose of the program is to fund teachers who lead innovative, standards-based programs and curricula in humane education, specifically the teaching of kindness and respect for animals and their natural habitats.  Deadline is November 30.  Visit http://www.humanesociety.org/parents_educators/award/humane_education_mini_grant.html for more information.
BCIU Education Foundation News
golfThe BCIU Education Foundation 14th Annual Golf Classic, held in October 2011, raised over $12,000 to benefit the Education Foundation.  The proceeds from the Golf Classic will now be used to provide grants to IU teachers to help them develop creative and innovative projects for BCIU students with special needs.

IU Van Driver Recognized......IUVanDr

Ken Grunewald, BCIU Van Driver,  was recently recognized by the Penndel Middletown Emergency Rescue Squad for his swift, organized action in response to an IU van accident in which no children were harmed.  Please click here for his recognition letter.


Educating Students with Complex Medical Needs
Congratulasueglenntions to Ted Feldstein, Susan Glenn, Rebecca Pettineo and Jenifer Wilde who presented at the PASA-PSBA School Leadership Conference in Hershey Pennsylvania on October 20, 2011. The conference provided professional development opportunities for school board members and other educational leaders.  This IU team presented a session titled, Curb to Curb: Educating Students with Complex Medical Needs. This learning experience guided participants in identifying factors to be addressed in the education of students with complex needs, showed the similarities and differences between classroom resources needed for students with and without significant medical needs and discussed the merit of Health Care Plans and Individualized Transportation Plans in the education of students with significant medical needs.

New Program in Quakertown Shopping PlazaSonic
The BCIU has established a new Multiple Disabilities Support (MDS) Class in the Quakertown Shopping Plaza. The location of this program has provided opportunities for the students to partner with local businesses.  BCIU students are working in volunteer positions at the Sonic in Quakertown.  Sonic has been very accommodating to the students. They volunteer everyday between their breakfast and lunch shifts. The students wipe down the tables, chairs and  menu boards. The BCIU appreciates the support of our community!
Technology Talk                                                                                FREE Virtual Speaker Series
The Instructional Materials & Technology Department of the Bucks County Intermediate Unit recently launched this year's lineup for our Virtual Speaker Series.  Through the use of the web conferencing tool Elluminate, we are able to bring in top notch talent from across the nation to provide high quality, interactive professional development directly to Bucks County teachers and administrators.  Our upcoming speakers are:
December 15, 2011 Learning Through Projects      3:00 - 4:00 p.m. 
January 12, 2012  Flat Classroom Projects    3:00 - 4:00 p.m.

March 28, 2012 The PA High School Computer Fair
This is an annual event that highlights Pennsylvania high school students' application skills and computer knowledge.  Students are able to unleash their creativity, learn how to convey information more dynamically, and enhance the learning process.  Pennsylvania students in grades 9 - 12 are eligible to compete in the following categories: Animation; Computer Fair Logo; Digital Movie; Graphic Design; Programming; and Web Page Design.
