For troubled students, behavior issues are not usually a one time occurrence and because of that they can monopolize teacher and administrator time. In an effort to help teachers and administrators improve their behavior management strategies, PublicSchoolWORKS created the Student Behavior Management System (SBMS).

This system, which is a part of the StudentWatch Suite, implements the school's behavior and discipline strategy and allows staff and administrators to track behaviors and monitor when they occur. Principals have access to what all teachers are reporting to alert them to trends and can intervene before a situation escalates. Behavior issues may be associated with and can often be caused by issues outside of school.

If staff members have one tool to easily track students' behaviors from the submission of a report to resolution of the issues, the ability to document all behaviors can often change behaviors and get students focused on learning. With PSW staff can document minor issues or referrals, in addition to having the ability to print positive certificates to recognize students for good behavior.

StudentWatch offers the only online behavior management system that completely and effectively implements a districts' behavior strategy. The system manages student discipline and other behavior data at the student, building, and district levels and ensures that all staff and administrators maintain consistency in addressing student behaviors in compliance with board policies and federal, state and local regulations.

News From the Field

In the public school system, it is the responsibility of administrators to educate every child and staff member. However, when do the rights of one student override the rights of another? When it comes to bullying, many parents and administrators avoid punishing bullying by either describing the behavior as normal for youth or by feeling unable to have an effect on the situation.

As a society, bullying has become much more violent and visible, yet it does not seem to be going away. What can schools do to stem the tide of bullying? They can follow the path of schools that have found ways to make anti-bullying a focus of both staff and students.

Recently schools in Nova Scotia hosted a Stand Up Against Bullying Day or "Pink Day." The goal was to give students a voice and allow them to no longer be bystanders should they see bullying. The inspiration for Pink Day came from two 12th grade students at Central Kings Rural High School in Cambridge, Kings County, Nova Scotia. In 2007, Travis Price and David Shepherd decided to rally behind a new student who was being bullied simply for wearing a pink shirt. They brought pink shirts to school and handed them out to classmates to wear in solidarity with the new student. This one act by two students has turned into an anti-bullying campaign worthy of duplication.

Anti-bullying efforts should become an everyday occurrence in schools and homes. Schools can teach students and parents how to take responsibility and how to play an active role in denouncing bullying. Schools in turn need to be committed to creating environments where bullying is not accepted.

How much written or verbal reprimand should an employee receive before being fired? In Pinellas County Schools, some employees have received more than eight written reports by managers before the idea of termination became a real threat. Three employees, all with serious behavioral issues including leaving a student on a school bus, have yet to be relieved as staff.  When do you think an employee has had enough chances? School business officials in Florida are fed up with employees receiving too many chances. After much debate, soon some employees may receive his or her pink slip due to unacceptable behavior.

On September 14th each of the employees was suspended for five days without pay.

Does it ever worry you that the process of firing someone can be so challenging and difficult that action is not taken? Or does the possible legal retaliation conflict you about keeping a troubled employee on staff?
