PSW Customer Wins Safety Award

Chinook's Edge School Division in Alberta, Canada was recently awarded the Certification of Recognition (COR) for its outstanding commitment to workplace safety. For an employer in Alberta, Canada to receive a COR, employers must develop health and safety programs that meet established standards.

In order to foster this safe working and learning environment, Chinook's Edge enlisted the services of PublicSchoolWORKS and implemented its EmployeeSafe Suite, an automated online safety system that facilitates timely administration of safety training, non-training regulatory compliance tasks, accident management, staff safety reporting such as near-miss and hazard reporting, and MSDS.

"My main goal as Chinook's Edge Safety Manager is to make workplace safety a top priority. We all embrace a culture of safety at our schools and PublicSchoolWORKS helps us meet the COR requirements with 4 out of the 8 elements being completely automated, making them hands-off for administration," said Linden Lonsberry, Chinook's Edge Safety Manager. "Auditors were very impressed with our safety and compliance documentation, accident investigation process, and online training. We could not have had such a positive response without PSW's programs."

Congrats Linden and all the staff at Chinook's Edge!
Developing Staff Training on ADD & ADHD

Balancing the rights of students to attend public schools, and maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all, can be a struggle for administrators. And,
administrators are often left on their own to figure out how to implement the requirements of continuously changing laws in order to stay in compliance.

PublicSchoolWORKS has taken the burden off of administrators through its online training program. Most recently the company has developed a course that meets the criteria specified in the new Illinois Law 105 ILCS 5/10-2.36. The law requires that at least once every two years certified school personnel and administrators take in-service training to include:
  • The current practices regarding the identification and treatment of ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
  • The application of non-aversive behavioral interventions in the school environment
  • The use of psychotropic or psychostimulant medication for school-age children

MD Launches Bullying Awareness Week

A recent article in the Baltimore Sun praised Pikesville Middle School in Pikesville, Maryland for their students' determination to keep bullying out of their hallways. Maryland's First Lady, Katie O'Malley, visited the school May 24, 2010 to kick off Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week in the state.

The bullying awareness week was designated by Governor O'Malley and state schools Superintendent, Nancy S. Grasmick, who sent a joint message to all district superintendents asking that schools participate in events to promote awareness and prevention.

Students presented a program called the "Pikesville Model" which stresses that bullying can be prevented if students are respectful, responsible, cooperative and accountable. As part of the program, each morning students talk about bullying in the classroom and are encouraged to take the lessons home to share with parents.

The Bullying Awareness Week was put in place after recent incidents that occurred in Massachusetts.

What are your schools doing to prevent bullying at the student level? Are you encouraging your students to play an active role in prevention? Ask a PSW expert how to begin implementing a bullying and violence prevention program in your hallways and kick bullying to the curb.

Teacher's Aren't Going to Take it Anymore @ This Florida School

Fed up teachers at Bloomingdale Senior High School in Valrico, Florida were tired of students texting, baring midriffs, gum chewing and acting disrespectful. In an effort to show them how silly all of their behaviors were, the staff came together and choreographed a lip-dubbed video to a song by the hard-rockin' '80s hair band Twisted Sister "We're Not Gonna Take It." Check out the You Tube Video and how these rowdy educators got their message across to these disrespectful teens.

EmployeeSafe's online OSHA 300 reporting systems for school districts ensure compliance with all state and federal reporting provisions. Additionally, EmployeeSafe provides the only OSHA 300 reporting systems that provide both a manual and an automated tool (integrated with the Employee Accident Management System) to address all reporting needs.

The online tool virtually eliminates administrator time and effort of collecting accident information, reviewing OSHA's reporting criteria, determining the "reportability" of each incident, and properly completing the OSHA's Form 300 (Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses), and Form 300A (Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses).

Administration is no longer burdened with meeting OSHA 300 reporting requirements and will see a reduction of no less than 50% of the time required of them to maintain compliance, regardless of how the process is being managed today!
