Water Intrusion Causes Major Problems Before and After construction
"When buildings leak, people sue, and that's the long and short of it."
Many buildings start leaking immediately after construction or show signs of problems within the first five years. Water intrusion is one of the main contributing factors to building damage, litigation, structural dam-age, rot, termites and microbial problems that can lead to sick building syndrome. For many, water leaks can be like a plague that just simply will not go away. Over the last two and a half decades, we have investi-gated and focused on these issues that create major problems for the construction team, building owners, and managers. In this article, we shall focus on the six common questions most people have regarding water intrusion. These questions will bring to light the common prob-lems and what measures can be taken to limit the effects of water intru-sion for residential, commercial, and high-rise buildings.

ASTM Looking For Participants for New Standard - The proposed new standard-ASTM WK32079, Test Method for Determination of Mold Growth on Building Products Designed for Exterior Applications Using an Environmental Chamber and Direct Inoculation-is being developed by Subcommittee G03.04 on Biological Deterioration, part of ASTM Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability.
The standard will allow for a mond-resistance rating to be given. For complete story click here.
Field Weathering Study of Roof Coatings - The Reflective Roof Coatings Institute (RCCI) conducted a study regarding the increased use of highly reflective white roof coatings. The study included three reflective coating chemistries (Acrylic, Polyurethane, Silicone) applied over six of the most common roof substrates.

Committee News - We encourage anyone who wants to be involved to contact the institute. If you would like more information or have questions about a particular committee contact the institute's Executive Director.
Online Training - The Institute is working on the development of an online training program in order to provide access to more professionals, since the cost of traveling is becoming more expensive.
Building Envelope Courses - The first of these new courses will be available soon and will focus on the building envelope; Level 1 Building Envelope Inspector (CBEI-1). This entry level course for commercial building inspectors is the first of five levels of training that results in being qualified as a Certified Building Envelope Consultant. More information about this and other courses may be found on the institute's website.
