Morningside Recovery News

 Newport Beach, California -September, 2010
Celebrating the First Anniversary of Candace Bruce, BSBM Chief Executive Officer of Morningside Recovery

Candace Bruce

After an exhaustive search of potential candidates, the Board of Directors welcomed Candace Bruce as Chief Executive Officer of Morningside Recovery in September of 2009.  Candace was selected because of her extensive industry and business experience, her understanding of the Morningside Model, her personal & professional integrity, and her ability to provide the leadership necessary to fulfill our mission to lead our team in the years to come.

It takes a unique individual to be able to capture the vision, implement the direction and run an operation such as Morningside. With over 60 full time employees, Morningside is a 24-hour a day working operation with 67 client-beds which occupy Medical Detox, Extended Care, and Transitional Living facilities; in addition to, outpatient programs, and specialty tracks such as the Morningside Academic Institute (MAI) and our Family Systems Series. In the last year, Candace has lead the Morningside Team to do an outstanding job in managing it all. Here is a snapshot of the projects she has lead and completed since her arrival.

Ø  Restructured our clinical program & instituted a clinical training program headed by Kenneth Perlmutter, Ph.D. that has produced a direct client/family benefit marked by the extended lengths of stay (on average a minimum of six months), and strong recognition and accolades from referring professional.

Ø  Staffed and trained a medically assisted detox

Ø  Expanded the bed capacity by 12 beds with a consistently full census

Ø  Spearheaded a facility makeover that has encompassed 8 residential living quarters and expansion of clinical and administrative office space by 5,000 SF

Ø  Helped facilitate the end of a 3-year legal battle with City of Newport Beach regarding housing treatment clients in a residential area

Ø  Leads a strong marketing outreach program that denotes the high-quality treatment and clinical benefits of the Morningside Model

The Board of Directors could not be more pleased with what Candace brings to MSR and could not think of a better person to represent the company in the years to come.  Above all else, her integrity and professionalism will be what our employees look to most when we come across the many opportunities and challenges that are sure to face us as we continue to meet our clients' needs in the face of some of the most difficult, yet successful circumstances.

Morningside's Treatment Programs

Our Programs - Your Journey:

Each client's journey toward recovery at Morningside begins with initial assessments that help the therapeutic team identify where the client is in the process.  Morningside takes this information to create a customized program that meets the client where he or she is.  We have identified three phases in early recovery.  Each client is introduced to various processes of recovery that address the mind, body, emotions, relationships, family, recovery itself, independent living and a future focus for living and life goals.  Our clients move through phases of treatment with specific goals for an internal shift and marked milestones that lead to a new lifestyle of recovery.

Learn it - Stabilize

Phase One is the "learn it" phase.  This phase focuses on stabilization.  Through evaluation and care by medical, psychiatric, and therapeutic staff we help each client complete post-acute withdrawal symptoms, restore a proper sleep/wake cycle, establish healthy eating routines, articulate basic goals for recovery, identify triggers, and distinguish between thought, motions and behaviors.  In addition, there is an introduction to family systems concepts, accepting ideas around spirituality, and self-care.  This phase initiates a shift into recovery.

Feel it - Responsibility

In Phase Two our clients begin to find "the meaning" in their active recovery and can identify personal feelings, take responsibility for their actions and use the tools they have learned in daily living.  They can anticipate situations and they can separate and identify a reaction from a response.  They become active in their recovery, moving through each day with an attitude that supports recovery, health and change.  Mood changes, depression and anxiety regulate as the therapeutic process helps each client identify external and internal forces that impact them.  Clients are encouraged and supported in open conversation with family members and they also practice recovery methods in daily living situations.

Live it - Solidifying

Phase Three supports all clients in experiencing their new-found recovery.  In fact, it is a phase of experiences.  There tends to be shift in attitude that includes giving back to the family and community.  Mood changes are less extreme and they begin to move through each day with the ability to deepen their commitment to a new lifestyle.  There is a higher consciousness emerging with a shift of reliance and the nature of acceptance. Personal power is derived from connection rather than control.  Family conversations and interactions are often more spontaneous and on safe ground for all.  The focus is now upon deeper issues that intrude on daily serenity, acceptance and stability.

Dual Disorder Treatment

Morningside has a dedicated staff of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and marriage and family therapists devoted to treating underlying or coexisting psychological disorders.  We have developed an integrated approach to the treatment of patients with co-occurring psychiatric disorders as well as marijuana, alcohol, methamphetamine, cocaine, opiate, and other drug use disorders.

We use a combination of the latest, well-proven methods in treating depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders.  We integrate individual and group addiction counseling approaches with psychiatric interventions, balancing the focus of dual treatment so that both the client's addiction and psychiatric issues are treated with equal importance.

Comprehensive Structured Treatment
