Keynote Speaker: Lu Jean Fedotov, Anchorage lending Manager with Alaska Division of Investments - Small Business Loan Programs available The Alaska Division of Investments' primary responsibility is to administer and service twelve state loan programs under the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development. These programs were primarily designed to promote economic development through direct state lending in industries that are not adequately serviced by the private sector. Active lending is currently available in five of our programs: Commercial Fishing, Fisheries Enhancement, Small Business Economic Development (SBED), Rural Development Initiative Fund, and Capstone Avionics.

Jr. Achievement Bowl-A-Thon
Junior Achievement is having a bowl- a thon on Feb 6th at 3pm at North Bowl. We are looking for teams of 5 to participate in this great event. Jr. Achievement is a non profit organization that promotes educating young people about economics and money. All the funds we raise stay in the valley. We have 20 programs planned for the spring in the Mat-Su School District. This is a fun event and a great way to get to spend some times with your friends or co workers. Dorothy A. Jones Volunteer of the Year Award 2009 United Way of Mat-Su established the Dorothy A. Jones Volunteer of the Year Award in 1992 to honor the memory of Dorothy Jones, a foremost community leader whose dedicated service helped to improve the quality of life for Mat-Su residents. To the end of her life, Dorothy served on the United Way of Mat-Su Board of Directors in addition to her many other areas of service. We are currently accepting applications for nominees for the 2009 Volunteer of the Year through February 15, 2010. Awards luncheon to be scheduled for March 2010. Please document the volunteer contributions made by the nominee, using no more than two pages, but no less than one page. Include the name(s) of organizations served, date(s) of service, and a narrative statement describing how the nominee's volunteerism has helped to improve the quality of life for Mat-Su residents. Valley Performing Arts - Marketing Director Opening
Join a progressive team of individuals dedicated to advancing the cultural and intellectual spirit of the community! Valley Performing Arts is looking for a motivated, energized, and creative individual to become its marketing director. Responsibilities include organizing and overseeing all aspects of publicity and promotion regarding the theatre productions, community programs, and special events including print, broadcast, and digital media. The marketing director is a key player in VPA's program to maintain the relationship with existing theatre patrons and sponsors as well as continued outreach to new vendors and prospective theatre clients. Prospective applicants will have at least three years experience in a marketing and/or promotional position with a demonstrated ability of having managed successful marketing efforts including meeting targets and progressive growth. An undergraduate degree in marketing or business is preferred; years of experience will be considered. An outgoing, friendly personality and the ability to work cooperatively with volunteers is a must. Familiarity with the Mat-Su business community is a plus and knowledge of the theatre environment would be helpful. Professional references will be required. Call Paxton at Qwick Signs today 232-8048 News from McCool Carlson Green Architects - FIRST LEED CERTIFIED SCHOOL IN ALASKAAnchorage, Alaska, December, 2009 - The Fred and Sara Machetanz Elementary School in Wasilla, Alaska is the first school in the state to receive the US Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The Matanuska-Susitna Borough recently adopted policies requiring public schools to achieve LEED certification for all new construction. The USGBC program has 4 award levels: basic certification, Silver, Gold and Platinum ratings. Although the policy was not adopted until after the design was substantially complete, Machetanz Elementary was able to achieve a LEED Silver rating. LEED for Schools is still in its infancy in Alaska, but school districts across the state are progressively seeking solutions to address energy use and environmental quality. The new Su Valley High School is also seeking LEED certification. Machetanz Elementary School was designed by McCool Carlson Green Architects. McCool Carlson Green is a leader in green building design in Alaska with 7 projects currently seeking LEED certification and 3 LEED Accredited Professionals on staff, including the USGBC Green Schools Advocacy Chair for the State of Alaska, Jason Gamache.
