Summer Guard Your Yard to Keep it Healthy & Bug-Free
Now that summer is finally here it's time to stay cool and keep your lawn and plants healthy and happy! Here are some tips on maintaining your yard during the summer months!
Summer Guard Your Yard to Keep Your House COOL:
- If you have an air conditioning unit that is on the East, South or West of your house, plant shrubs that are a little taller than your unit and far enough away to not block intakes or filters. This will create shade so your unit will not have to work as hard.
- Plant small trees or shrubs on the East and West sides of your house to block low early sun and late day sun. This can help keep the inside of your home five to ten degrees cooler.
Summer Tips to Keep Your Lawn HEALTHY:
- Keep your lawn mowed to a height of 3- 3 1/2 inches to help maintain moisture and keep the roots cooler.
- Keep the mower blade as sharp as possible. A dull blade produces rougher cuts that make your lawn more susceptible to disease.
- Do not water your lawn at night, which can encourage lawn fungus.
- Remember to feed your lawn with a slow-release lawn food
Summer Help to Keep Your Yard Flourishing and BUG-FREE:
- Apply a mulch around your plants and trees to help keep weeds down and help hold moisture. Make sure you keep the mulch away from plant trunks to avoid rot.
- Check all drippers and sprinklers to make sure they are working properly.
- Water plants in containers at least once a day, possibly more on very hot days.
- Apply a snail and slug insect bait around your plants to protect them from evening feeding insects. Also, try to catch insect infestations early so they are easier to control.
