A handy holiday helper!
Packing tape can be used in so many ways around the holidays. From giving those holiday decorations and lights a little extra (almost invisible) help staying up, to making sure those big gifts stay closed until the perfect time comes, packing tape is handy to have around. Don't forget to tape your holiday storage boxes closed to ensure your holiday mementos will be in the same shape next year and dust free. |

HOLIDAY SAFETY |
Watch out for electric safety hazards as you unpack your favorite light strings and trim for the holiday season.
Remember to:
- Check for frayed cords on all electric decorations. Throw out any frayed cords your find.
- Use only lighting labeled for outdoor use when decorating outside.
- Never overload outlets with too many power cords.
- Don't place electric cords under rugs or across areas where people may trip.
-Turn off holiday lights when you leave the house or go to bed. |

Recycle! Drop off your old, ugly, broken string lights at Schemper's Ace Hardware and help kids with cancer. Ace is partnering with Lights for Life, a non profit organization that collects string lights and sells them to a recycling company. The proceeds are then donated to a family who has a child with cancer. A great big thank you to all of those who have taken the time to recycle and assist this wonderful organization in helping kids with cancer.

THE COLD DAYS OF WINTER | |

It's the time of year to prepare for the rain, frost and chill of winter. Schemper's has some suggestions to help you avoid costly repairs, add comfort and save on your utilities bills.
Lets start outside. - Insulate doors, windows, and cracks to stop cold drafts and save energy. Schempers stocks switch/outlet insulation and roof turbine vent covers. Insulate your whole house fan with a water heater blanket. Lay the blanket on top of your fan to stop the heat loss. - Insulate pipes and valves to prevent freeze damage. In addition to pipe insulation, Schempers stocks water pipe heat tape that automatically turns on at 38 degrees and off at 45 degrees. Don't wait for a freeze warning, prepare today. - Clean your gutters. We carry several products to assist you in your task, including the new Orbit telescoping gutter cleaner. Cleaning your gutters from the ground level with a water jet will make the job easy and safe. - Prune tree branches back, away from the roof and house. Schempers has a great selection of pruning shears, chainsaws, and extendable pole pruners to tackle the job. Moving inside. - Installing a programmable thermostat to control your furnace will save on your utility bill and increase your comfort. - Replace your furnace filter monthly during the cold months. A clean filter can reduce your energy costs by up to 5%. - Use a wood clothes drying rack to cut down on the use of your dryer, a big energy consumer. - Prepare for power outages. Schempers has a great selection of automatic power failure lights, lanterns, and flashlights. Don't forget to check and replace batteries every year to stay prepared.
Don't wait for a storm, freeze warning or power outage, prepare today. Stop by the store and let our helpful associates assist you in finding the perfect tools and supplies needed for a safe, warm winter.

SCHEMPER'S ACE HARDWARE YOUR GREEN STORE! |
Conserving energy is on everyone's mind these days, even our government. New California light bulb legislation in effect January 1, 2011 will halt the production of "general service bulbs" over 72 watts (incandescent, crystal clear, halogen, etc.). Schemper's Ace carries a variety of approved replacements bulbs and we will help you to find the right CFL or LED for your lighting needs. We will also continue to sell (for as long as possible) the soon to be extinct "standard light bulb". More changes are scheduled for ensuing years. We have attached a quick reference guide for you to view.
We are always excited to help you in any way possible, whether you want to stock up on standard light bulbs or bite the bullet and find the right energy efficient replacement bulb.

SAFE DISPOSAL OF BROKEN CFLS
Compact florescent lamps have a small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. The average CFL holds about four milligrams of mercury, about enough to cover the tip of a ballpoint pen. The mercury is safely contained inside the CFL when the bulb is in use. Safety becomes an issue only if the CFL is broken.
To safely clean up a broken CFL follow these instructions adapted form the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: 1. Open nearby windows to disperse any vapor that may escape. 2. Sweep up the fragments carefully (don't use your hands). 3. Wipe the area with a disposable paper towel. Do not use a vacuum cleaner. 4. Place all fragments in a sealed plastic bag or jar with a lid. 5. Put all clean-up materials outdoors in a trash container for the next trash pickup.
6. Wash your hands. |
