EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2011
*All existing single-family dwellings that contain a fossil fuel burning heater or appliance, fireplace, or an attached garage must install carbon monoxide alarms.
*All other existing dwellings (multi family) shall comply by January 1, 2013.
*CO alarms must be either battery-powered or plug-in with battery backup.
*CO alarms must be installed outside of sleeping areas and on every level of a dwelling, including the basement.
We know this is not a law yet, but we want you to sleep easy at night knowing you have the right carbon monoxide alarm that will comply with the new law. The following tips may help in the selection and installation of a carbon monoxide detector.
* Install at least one carbon monoxide detector on every floor and
within 15 feet of the entrance to each sleeping area.
* Do not install carbon monoxide detectors directly above or beside
fuel burning appliances, or within 15 feet of a bathroom heating
unit.
* Look for a detector that also has a peak-level memory reading.
This feature records the highest level of carbon monoxide present
over a period of time, which is helpful to emergency personnel.
* Install dedicated carbon monoxide detectors at eye-level to remind
you to test them periodically. Install combination smoke and
carbon monoxide detectors near or on the ceiling for best smoke
detection, carbon monoxide will be detected regardless of
vertical placement.
* Change the battery on your carbon monoxide detectors ( and your
smoke detectors) every year when you set your clocks back in the
fall.
* Replace your carbon monoxide detector every 5 years.
* Specific installation instructions vary based on the carbon
monoxide detector purchased. Always read and follow the
manufacturer's instructions.
If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, turn off all fuel-burning
appliances and immediately circulate fresh air by opening doors and window. Call a repair technician to have the problem fixed before restarting appliance. If anyone in the home shows signs of dizziness, headaches or vomiting, call 911.
Schemper's Ace Hardware carries a full line of carbon monoxide detectors and also smoke/carbon monoxide combination alarms. The features vary on the alarms and we would love to help you find the perfect alarm that will work best in your home.
