Insects enjoy summer and love to feast on the leaves of your plants.  Prevention is the best coarse of action and we have products to help deter infestation, but if you are noticing something unusual with your plants, act fast, it's easier to control infestations in the early stages. Here are a few common summer insects and control methods.

 

     Aphids: small green, orange or brown colored insects that extract

                 plant fluids, killing leaf cells and weakening plants              

          Symptoms: sticky leaves, puckered leaves, ants going up

                  into plants to feed on the sticky excretion that aphids

                  leave on the plant

                  Natural - Ladybugs

                  

     Budworm: a caterpillar that eats the blooms of petunias or geraniums 

          Symptoms: black round droppings on plant and blooms partially or

                 completely eaten

          Control: Pyrethrum

                 Safe/Natural Control BT

 

     Earwigs or Pincherbugs: bugs that comes out at night and eat the

                 leaves of garden flowers and vegetables 

         Symptoms: eaten plant without snail or slug slime visible

         Control: Cookes Pest Control

                 Bug Getta Plus

                 Sluggo Plus (safe around pets)

 

     Spider Mites: tiny spider like insect that extracts plant fluids and

                 weakens plant 

          Symptoms: very fine webbing on plant and back of leaves that 

                 have a dusty look to them. Tap leaf over very white sheet of

                 paper, if spider mites are present you will see tiny red or brown

                 insects moving on paper

          Control: Neem Oil or Take Down

                 Pyrethrum

                 Natural - Ladybugs

 

     Whitefly: small pure white gnat that extracts plant fluids 

           Symptoms: puckered leaves, weakened plants, visible whiteflies

                 on leaves  

           Control: Sticky whitefly traps to catch adult whiteflies

                 Neem Oil

                 Safer Insecticidal Soap

                 Pyrethrum

 

It is necessary to apply all insecticides carefully, but it is very important if using spray applications that the foliage will be able to throughly dry before the intense summer sun shines on your plant.
