GAIL'S ITEM OF INTEREST |
Springtime is here and now that we are spending more time outdoors, we notice that the hummingbirds are back. It is time to put up a hummingbird feeder and sit back and enjoy.
Schemper's Ace Hardware carries a large selection of feeders, but the one I like is the "Best 1 Hummingbird Feeder". It features 8 feeding ports and an easy to clean glass jar that holds 32 ounces of nectar. The 32 ounce feeder retails for $13.99, but with the coupon at the bottom of the newsletter you get a special price of $9.99.
We also carry several nectars and even a port brush to complete all your hummingbird feeding needs. |
PRESTIGIOUS AWARD |
Schemper's Ace Hardware your neighborhood store has been recognized for exemplary achievements and service in 2009 by being named a "Vision 21 Platinum" retailer by Ace Hardware Corporation. This honor is bestowed on the brand's top-performing stores, only 272 out of approximately 4,500 locally owned Ace Hardware stores achieved such high honors for 2009. Ace's Vision 21 retail achievement program provides initiatives, guidelines and goals designed to help Ace stores improve sales and overall store performance. The initiatives are aimed at improving the store environment and the staff, all in an effort to improve the customer experience in store. Of the three levels of Visions 21 achievement a store can achieve, platinum level is the highest, and represents the top six percent of all Ace stores.
"Our Vision 21 Platinum stores really represent our "best retailers", the ones who truly go above and beyond to serve their customers and put their best foot forward every day," said Kane Calamari, Ace Hardware's vice president of retail operations. "We're thrilled to recognize these stores and store teams for their outstanding achievements, and proud to say they're a part of the Ace family."
Ace's platinum-achieving retailers were presented a plaque at a three-day retail conference and were honored in New Orleans at the company's spring convention. | |

EXPANDING YOUR LIFESTYLE |
Living Outdoors...
By far the hottest trend the past few years has been to expand your home's square footage by moving out! Any patio or backyard can be transformed into a relaxing haven for a glass of wine or a full kitchen and dining area for those family gatherings.
The most important thing is to dig deep and envision what you desire. What kind of space would most enhance your lifestyle. Do you crave a quiet & serene place or more of an entertainment area? Secondly, be realistic about the size available to you and what you can afford to do at this time...remember simple changes can make a big impact and fit any budget! Next, decide what theme and color choices will best fit your plan. Sometimes getting inspiration from pictures in magazines, a hotel you've stayed in, or a rug you "must have" will be the key.
When designing my backyard I took my inspiration from vacations we'd spent in Mexico. We enclosed an existing gazebo and used tin slats for the roof, painted the floor like it was 12x12 tile and added a bar with stools. By hanging chili ristas, painting the back of the house terracotta and using tropical cannas my vision came to be!
Now, get started so you can enjoy the coming season living outdoors!
Tips to help:
- Re-think furniture and accessories you already have. By using spray paint and some new pillows you will create a whole new look. Don't overlook the details, spruce up planted pottery, statuary and the back door with new paint too!
- Be adventurous ...add a wall to define the space, bring in pavers to border your existing concrete patio for more space, and add ambience with a fountain or fireplace. (Try staining your patio with a mocha or golden color to make it more contemporary.)
- Think of this area as a room and have fun with color, accessories and plants. Add them to the walls, corners and the floor. Finish the design off with rugs, lamps or lanterns and hanging sculptures.
- Most importantly, think of this additional space as an extension of your interior. The design will flow best if you coordinate the new area to what is visible to the inside. This doesn't mean you can't have a different theme, just being consistent with one dominant color will do the trick.
What's New ?
The newest trend in color for your outdoor living and patio areas are rust and aqua, with lime green staying strong again this year. The color of the year voted by the National Color Institute is turquoise. This enhances pool areas beautifully. Accents and furniture bases in cocoa and black give dramatic punch.
Emerging as a popular trend is the "nature" inspired scheme. Using earthy elements such as sticks and branches in outdoor pots, large seashells in a bamboo bowl, and muslin woven drapes from columns on the deck. Bringing in accents such as shutters made from old wood or using an old wooden carved door as a patio table gives this trend it's charm.
Exterior house color choices are all over the board. Usually chosen to match the roof, blend in with the landscape or to "brighten" things up. A color we at Schemper's mix a lot of is "Wicker", a sand-like hue. Don't be afraid to go out of your comfort zone for the entry door. Using mandarin red is good feng-shui and chocolate brown is welcoming.
Why not be really in style and go with turquoise...that would make your guests smile!

SCHEMPER'S ACE HARDWARE - YOUR GREEN HARDWARE STORE |
Go Green While Greening Your Lawn
Consider non-combustion lawn and garden tools, such as rechargeable lawn mowers, battery-operated weed trimmers and good old-fashioned hand tools. Using these items will help reduce pollution as you tidy up your outdoor space.
Go Green and Save By Composting
Composting is a natural way to go "green". Recycle your "browns and greens" by tossing a 50 - 50 mix in a composter. Browns are straw, twigs and dried leaves. Greens are grass clippings, manure and vegetable waste.
We carry the EZ Composter Jr. (sku 714009) that retails for $169.99, but to help get you started it is on sale for the month of April at $139.99. The EZ part of this composter is that it spins to mix your compost.
Heidi, our garden manger, is really into composting and will be happy to answer your questions and share her favorite tips. |
